Field testing of strategies for fire blight control in organic fruit growing
In organic fruit growing effective control strategies are needed to prevent blossom infections by the fire blight pathogen Erwinia amylovora. Many potential control agents are under discussion and have been tested in vitro and in vivo. 19 out of 27 tested preparations showed a high efficacy against E. amylovora in vitro. Nevertheless, on detached apple blossoms only 7 of them led to a symptom reduction by more than 50%. In six field trials conducted according to the EPPO guideline PP1/166(3) BlossomProtect (82%), Myco-sin (65%) and Funguran (58%) had the highest efficiency. In 2006 and 2007, strategies to integrate BlossomProtect in spray schedules of organic apple production have been tested. The use of sulphur or lime-sulphur before or after BlossomProtect did not influence the efficiency of BlossomProtect, which showed that fire blight control is possible without compromising apple scab control. The addition of Cutisan to BlossomProtect reduced fruit russet. An alternating use of BlossomProtect and Myco-sin was shown to be possible

On the detectability of non-trivial topologies
We explore the main physical processes which potentially affect the
topological signal in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) for a range of
toroidal universes. We consider specifically reionisation, the integrated
Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, the size of the causal horizon, topological defects
and primordial gravitational waves. We use three estimators: the information
content, the S/N statistic and the Bayesian evidence. While reionisation has
nearly no effect on the estimators, we show that taking into account the ISW
strongly decreases our ability to detect the topological signal. We also study
the impact of varying the relevant cosmological parameters within the 2 sigma
ranges allowed by present data. We find that only Omega_Lambda, which
influences both ISW and the size of the causal horizon, significantly alters
the detection for all three estimators considered here.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
Nondegenerate Fermions in the Background of the Sphaleron Barrier
We consider level crossing in the background of the sphaleron barrier for
nondegenerate fermions. The mass splitting within the fermion doublets allows
only for an axially symmetric ansatz for the fermion fields. In the background
of the sphaleron we solve the partial differential equations for the fermion
functions. We find little angular dependence for our choice of ansatz. We
therefore propose a good approximate ansatz with radial functions only. We
generalize this approximate ansatz with radial functions only to fermions in
the background of the sphaleron barrier and argue, that it is a good

Bayesian estimation applied to multiple species
Observed data are often contaminated by undiscovered interlopers, leading to biased parameter estimation. Here we present BEAMS (Bayesian estimation applied to multiple species) which significantly improves on the standard maximum likelihood approach in the case where the probability for each data point being “pure” is known. We discuss the application of BEAMS to future type-Ia supernovae (SNIa) surveys, such as LSST, which are projected to deliver over a million supernovae light curves without spectra. The multiband light curves for each candidate will provide a probability of being Ia (pure) but the full sample will be significantly contaminated with other types of supernovae and transients. Given a sample of N supernovae with mean probability, ⟨P⟩, of being Ia, BEAMS delivers parameter constraints equal to N⟨P⟩ spectroscopically confirmed SNIa. In addition BEAMS can be simultaneously used to tease apart different families of data and to recover properties of the underlying distributions of those families (e.g. the type-Ibc and II distributions). Hence BEAMS provides a unified classification and parameter estimation methodology which may be useful in a diverse range of problems such as photometric redshift estimation or, indeed, any parameter estimation problem where contamination is an issue
The Sphaleron Barrier in the Presence of Fermions
We calculate the minimal energy path over the sphaleron barrier in the
pre\-sen\-ce of fermions, assuming that the fermions of a doublet are
degenerate in mass. This allows for spherically symmetric ans\"atze for the
fields, when the mixing angle dependence is neglected. While light fermions
have little influence on the barrier, the presence of heavy fermions ( TeV) strongly deforms the barrier, giving rise to additional sphalerons
for very heavy fermions ( 10 TeV). Heavy fermions form
