'She has received many honours': identity in article bio statements

    Get PDF
In contrast to the prescribed anonymity of the research article, the bio which accompanies it is perhaps the most explicit assertion of self-representation in scholarly life. Here is a rhetorical space where, in 50-100 words, authors are able to craft a narrative of expertise for themselves. It is a key opening for academics, both novice and experienced, to manage a public image through the careful recounting of achievement. Yet despite the current interest in identity, the bio has largely escaped attention. In this paper we address this neglect through analysis of 600 bios across three disciplines, exploring the importance of discipline, status and gender in mediating the ways writers claim an identity. Our argument is that, despite its brevity, the bio is an important means of representing an academic self through the recognition of collective values and membership. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.postprin

Path integral Monte Carlo simulations of silicates

We investigate the thermal expansion of crystalline SiO2_2 in the β\beta-- cristobalite and the β\beta-quartz structure with path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) techniques. This simulation method allows to treat low-temperature quantum effects properly. At temperatures below the Debye temperature, thermal properties obtained with PIMC agree better with experimental results than those obtained with classical Monte Carlo methods.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, Phys. Spin Hall Effect in Doped Semiconductor Structures

In this Letter we present a microscopic theory of the extrinsic spin Hall effect based on the diagrammatic perturbation theory. Side-jump (SJ) and skew-scattering (SS) contributions are explicitly taken into account to calculate the spin Hall conductivity, and we show their effects scale as σxySJ/σxySS(/τ)/ϵF\sigma_{xy}^{SJ}/\sigma_{xy}^{SS} \sim (\hbar/\tau)/\epsilon_F, with τ\tau being the transport relaxation time. Motivated by recent experimental work we apply our theory to n- and p-doped 3D and 2D GaAs structures, obtaining σs/σc103104\sigma_s/\sigma_c \sim 10^{-3}-10^{-4} where σs(c)\sigma_{s(c)} is the spin Hall (charge) conductivity, which is in reasonable agreement with the recent experimental results of Kato \textit{et al}. [Science \textbf{306}, 1910 (2004)] in n-doped 3D GaAs system.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Microsaccade directions do not predict directionality of illusory brightness changes of overlapping transparent surfaces

AbstractTse (2005) recently introduced a new class of illusory brightness changes where shifts of attention lead to shifts in perceived brightness across overlapping, transparent figures, under conditions of visual fixation. In the absence of endogenous attentional shifts, illusory brightness changes appear to shift from figure to figure spontaneously, much as occurs in other multistable phenomena. The goal of the present research is to determine whether fixational microsaccades are correlated with perceived brightness changes. It has recently been demonstrated that microsaccades can reveal the direction of covert attentional shifts either toward (Engbert, R. & Kliegl, R. (2003). Microsaccades uncover the orientation of covert attention. Vision Research, 43, 1035–1045; Hafed, Z. M. & Clark, J. J. (2002). Microsaccades as an overt measure of covert attention shifts. Vision Research, 42(22), 2533–2545) or away from (Rolfs, M., Engbert, R., & Kliegl, R. (2004). Microsaccade orientation supports attentional enhancement opposite a peripheral cue: commentary on Tse, Sheinberg, and Logothetis (2003). Psychological Science, 15(10), 705–707) a peripheral cue under certain circumstances. Others (Horwitz, G. D. & Albright, T. D. (2003). Short-latency fixational saccades induced by luminance increments. Journal of Neurophysiology, 90(2), 1333–1339; Tse, P. U., Sheinberg, D. L., & Logothetis, N. K. (2002). Fixational eye movements are not affected by abrupt onsets that capture attention. Vision Research, 42, 1663–1669; Tse, P. U., Sheinberg, D. L., & Logothetis, N. K. (2004). The distribution of microsaccade directions need not reveal the location of attention. Psychological Science, 15(10), 708–710) found no change in the distribution of microsaccade directions as a function of where attention is allocated, although changes in the rate of microsaccades were observed in all of these studies in response to the onset of attentional reallocation. It is therefore possible that the distribution of microsaccade directions will change as a function of which figure is perceived to darken, or that changes in this distribution predict which figure will subsequently darken. We find no correlation between this distribution and which figure undergoes the effect, and therefore conclude that microsaccade directionality is not influenced by and does not influence which figure undergoes the effect. Moreover, the directions of microsaccades that occur immediately prior to a perceptual switch are not correlated with the perceived position of the figure that undergoes the effect. However, we do find that the rate of microsaccades decreases upon a perceptual switch, signifying an attentional shift coincident with the perceptual shift. We conclude that microsaccade directionality does not determine, predict, or cause which figure will subsequently be perceived to undergo an illusory brightness change

The SOQUA 2006 Workshop was held in conjunction with the 14th ACM SIGSOFT International Symposium on Foundations of Software Engineering (SIGSOFT 2006/FSE-14) ACM Press, New York, NY.An oracle on software testing is a mechanism for checking whether the system under test has behaved correctly for any executions. In some situations, oracles are unavailable or too expensive to apply. This is known as the oracle problem. It is crucial to develop techniques to address it, and metamorphic testing (MT) was one of such proposals. This paper conducts a controlled experiment to investigate the cost effectiveness of using MT by 38 testers on three open-source programs. The fault detection capability and time cost of MT are compared with the popular assertion checking method. Our results show that MT is cost-efficient and has potentials for detecting more faults than the assertion checking method. A combined XAS and XRD Study of the High-Pressure Behaviour of GaAsO4 Berlinite

Combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments have been carried out on GaAsO4 (berlinite structure) at high pressure and room temperature. XAS measurements indicate four-fold to six-fold coordination changes for both cations. The two local coordination transformations occur at different rates but appear to be coupled. A reversible transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs around 8 GPa. At a pressure of about 12 GPa, the system mainly consists of octahedral gallium atoms and a mixture of arsenic in four-fold and six-fold coordinations. A second transition to a highly disordered material with both cations in six-fold coordination occurs at higher pressures and is irreversible.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2

Essential micro-foundations for contemporary business operations: top management tangible competencies, relationship-based business networks and environmental sustainability

    Get PDF
Although various studies have emphasized linkages between firm competencies, networks and sustainability at organizational level, the links between top management tangible competencies (e.g., contemporary relevant quantitative-focused education such as big data analytics and data-driven applications linked with the internet of things, relevant experience and analytical business applications), relationship-based business networks (RBNs) and environmental sustainability have not been well established at micro-level, and there is a literature gap in terms of investigating these relationships. This study examines these links based on the unique data collected from 175 top management representatives (chief executive officers and managing directors) working in food import and export firms headquartered in the UK and New Zealand. Our results from structural equation modelling indicate that top management tangible competencies (TMTCs) are the key determinants for building RBNs, mediating the correlation between TMTCs and environmental sustainability. Directly, the competencies also play a vital role towards environmental practices. The findings further depict that relationship-oriented firms perform better compared to those which focus less on such networks. Consequently, our findings provide a deeper understanding of the micro-foundations of environmental sustainability based on TMTCs rooted in the resource-based view and RBNs entrenched in the social network theory. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings, and we provide suggestions for future research
