    Impact fatigue in adhesive joints

    One of the forms of a vibro-impact effect in engineering components is impact fatigue (IF) caused by a cyclic repetition of low energy, low-velocity impacts, for instance, in aerospace structures. It can have a highly detrimental impact on performance and reliability of such components, exacerbated by the fact that in many cases it is disguised in loading histories by non-impact loading cycles with higher amplitudes. Since the latter are traditionally considered as most dangerous in standard fatigue, IF has not yet received deserved attention; it is less studied and practically unknown to specialists in structural integrity. Though there is a broad understanding of the danger of high-energy single impacts, repetitive impacting of components has been predominantly studied for very short series. This paper aims at the analysis of IF of adhesively bonded joints, which are becoming more broadly used in aerospace applications. The study is implemented for two types of typical adherends – an aluminium alloy and a carbon-fibre reinforced composite – and an industry-relevant epoxy adhesive. Various stages of fatigue crack development in adhesively bonded joints are studied for the conditions of standard and IF. The results obtained – in terms of crack growth rates, fatigue lives, and microstructures of fracture surfaces – are compared for the two regimes in order to find similarities and specific features

    Damage in adhesively bonded CFRP joints : sinusoidal and impact-fatigue

    The main aim of this paper is to investigate the behaviour of adhesively bonded CFRP joints subjected to cyclic low-velocity impacts and to compare this with fracture in specimens tested in standard fatigue (i.e. non-impacting, constant amplitude, sinusoidal fatigue). It is seen that the accumulated energy associated with damage in impact-fatigue is significantly lower than that associated with similar damage in standard fatigue and that the mechanisms of failure are very different for the two loading regimes. For both types of loading, fracture initiates in the adhesive layer and then propagates into the 0º ply of the composite adjacent to the adhesive layer. However, the fracture surfaces after impact-fatigue are generally less uniform and exhibit more signs of high rate/brittle fracture than seen in the fracture surfaces after standard fatigue testing. Various parameters are proposed to characterise damage in standard and impact-fatigue and it is shown that crack velocity, accumulated absorbed energy and normalised maximum force are all useful parameters for characterising damage evolution

    Delamination in adhesively bonded CFRP joints : standard fatigue, impact-fatigue and intermittent impact

    The response of adhesive joints to three fatigue regimes, namely; constant amplitude sinusoidal loading (standard fatigue, SF), cyclic in-plane impacts (impact fatigue, IF) and a combination of the two (CSIF), has been investigated. The samples used in this study were carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) lap-strap joints (LSJs) bonded with a rubber modified epoxy adhesive. It was observed that fatigue fracture at very low load amplitudes occurred in IF. Two main patterns of failure were observed in SF; cohesive failure in the adhesive, which was linked to slow fatigue crack growth behaviour, and a mixed-mode failure, involving failure in both the adhesive and the CFRP. In addition, it was observed that the transition from cohesive to mixed mode failure was accompanied by crack growth acceleration. In IF it was seen that all failure was of a mixed-mechanism nature. In the combined standard and impact fatigue it was seen that the introduction of a relatively small number of impacts between SF blocks drastically changed the dynamics of fatigue crack propagation, increasing the crack rate. A further observation was that cavitation of rubber particles in the adhesive, which is seen as evidence of active toughening, was affected by the addition of impact loading

    Talking South African fathers: a critical examination of men’s constructions and experiences of fatherhood and fatherlessness

    The absence of biological fathers in South Africa has been constructed as a problem for children of both sexes but more so for boy-children. Arguably the dominant discourse in this respect has demonized non-nuclear, female-headed households. Fathers are constructed as either absent or ‘bad’. Thus it has become important to explore more closely how male care-givers have been experienced by groups of men in South Africa. This article examines discourses of fatherhood and fatherlessness by drawing on qualitative interviews with a group of 29 men who speak about their reported experiences and understandings of being fathered or growing up without biological fathers. Two major and intertwined subjugated discourses about adult men’s experiences of being fathered that counter- balance the prevailing discourses about meaning of fatherhood and fatherlessness became evident, namely, ‘being always there’ and ‘talking fatherhood’. The importance of the experience of fatherhood as ‘being there’, which relates to a quality of time and relationship between child and father rather than physical time together, is illustrated. It is not only biological fathers who can ‘be there’ for their sons but also social fathers, other significant male role models and father figures who step in at different times in participants’ lives when biological fathers are unavailable for whatever reason. Second, many positive experiences of fathers or father figures that resist a traditional role of authority and control and subscribe to more nurturant and non-violent forms of care, represented as ‘talking’ fathers, are underlined. If we are to better understand the impact of colonial and apartheid history and its legacy on family life in contemporary society, there is a need for more historically and contextually informed studies on the meaning of fatherhood and fatherlessness.Web of Scienc

    Ti alloy with enhanced machinability in UAT turning

    Metastable β-titanium alloys such as Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 3Sn are of great technological interest thanks to their high fatigue strength-to-density ratio. However, their high hardness and poor machinability increase machining costs. Additionally, formation of undesirable long chips increases the machining time. To address those issues, a metastable β-titanium alloy (Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 2Zr 0.9La) with enhanced machinability was developed to produce short chips even at low cutting speeds. A hybrid ultrasonically assisted machining technique, known to reduce cutting forces, was employed in this study. Cutting force components and surface quality of the finished work-pieces were analyzed for a range of cutting speeds in comparison with those for more traditional Ti 15V 3Al 3Cr 3Sn. The novel alloy demonstrated slightly improved machining characteristics at higher cutting speeds and is now ready for industrial applications

    Medium and long-term adherence to postabortion contraception among women having experienced unsafe abortion in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Postabortion contraceptive service is considered an effective means in addressing the problem of unsafe abortion; in spite this fact this component remains one of the weakest parts of postabortion care. In this context, the paper aims to describe the impact of a postabortion contraceptive service intervention among women admitted with complications from unsafe abortions and to explore the women's long-term contraceptive adherence.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>392 women having experienced unsafe abortion were identified by an empathetic approach and offered postabortion contraceptive service, which included counselling on HIV and condom use. Questionnaire interviews about contraceptive use were conducted at the time of inclusion and 12 months after the abortion. Additionally, in-depth interviews were performed 6–12 months after the abortion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eighty-nine percent of the women accepted postabortion contraception. Follow-up information was obtained 12 months after the abortion among 59 percent of the women. Among these, 79 percent of the married women and 84 percent of the single women stated they were using contraception at 12 months. Condom use among the single women increased significantly during the 12 months follow up.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Postabortion contraceptive services appear to be well accepted by women who are admitted with complications after an unsafe abortion and should thus be recognized as an important means in addressing the problem of unsafe abortion. In addition, counselling about HIV and condom use should be considered an essential aspect of postabortion care.</p

    3D Finite Element Modelling of Cutting Forces in Drilling Fibre Metal Laminates and Experimental Hole Quality Analysis

    Machining Glass fibre aluminium reinforced epoxy (GLARE) is cumbersome due to distinctively different mechanical and thermal properties of its constituents, which makes it challenging to achieve damage-free holes with the acceptable surface quality. The proposed work focuses on the study of the machinability of thin (~2.5 mm) GLARE laminate. Drilling trials were conducted to analyse the effect of feed rate and spindle speed on the cutting forces and hole quality. The resulting hole quality metrics (surface roughness, hole size, circularity error, burr formation and delamination) were assessed using surface profilometry and optical scanning techniques. A three dimensional (3D) finite-element (FE) model of drilling GLARE laminate was also developed using ABAQUS/Explicit to help understand the mechanism of drilling GLARE. The homogenised ply-level response of GLARE laminate was considered in the FE model to predict cutting forces in the drilling process

    Understanding resilience of female adolescents towards teenage pregnancy: a cross-sectional survey in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

    Abstract Background In Tanzania, teenage pregnancy rates are still high despite the efforts being made to reduce them. Not enough is known about how adolescents experience and cope with sexuality and teenage pregnancy. Over the past few decades, most studies have focused on vulnerability and risk among youth. The concept of ‘reproductive resilience’ is a new way of looking at teenage pregnancy. It shifts the perspective from a deficit-based to a strength-based approach. The study presented here aimed to identify factors that could contribute to strengthening the reproductive resilience of girls in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Methods Using a cross-sectional cluster sampling approach, 750 female adolescents aged 15–19 years were interviewed about how they mobilize resources to avoid or deal with teenage pregnancy. The main focus of the study was to examine how social capital (relations with significant others), economic capital (command over economic resources), cultural capital (personal dispositions and habits), and symbolic capital (recognition and prestige) contribute to the development of adolescent competencies for avoiding or dealing with teenage pregnancy and childbirth. Results A cumulative competence scale was developed to assess reproductive resilience. The cumulative score was computed based on 10 competence indicators that refer to the re- and pro-active mobilization of resources. About half of the women who had never been pregnant fell into the category, ‘high competence’ (50.9%), meaning they could get the information and support needed to avoid pregnancies. Among pregnant women and young mothers, most were categorized as ‘high competence’ (70.5%) and stated that they know how to avoid or deal with health problems that might affect them or their babies, and could get the information and support required to do so. Cultural capital, in particular, contributed to the competence of never-pregnant girls [OR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.06 to 3.07, p = 0.029], pregnant adolescents and young mothers [OR = 3.33, 95% CI = 1.15 to 9.60, p = 0.026]. Conclusions The reproductive resilience framework provides new insights into the reproductive health realities of adolescent girls from a strength-based perspective. While acknowledging that teenage pregnancy has serious negative implications for many female adolescents, the findings presented here highlight the importance of considering girls’ capacities to prevent or deal with teenage pregnancy
