Spin-orbit readout using thin films of topological insulator Sb2Te3 deposited by industrial magnetron sputtering
Driving a spin-logic circuit requires the production of a large output signal
by spin-charge interconversion in spin-orbit readout devices. This should be
possible by using topological insulators, which are known for their high
spin-charge interconversion efficiency. However, high-quality topological
insulators have so far only been obtained on a small scale, or with large scale
deposition techniques which are not compatible with conventional industrial
deposition processes. The nanopatterning and electrical spin injection into
these materials has also proven difficult due to their fragile structure and
low spin conductance. We present the fabrication of a spin-orbit readout device
from the topological insulator Sb2Te3 deposited by large-scale industrial
magnetron sputtering on SiO2. Despite a modification of the Sb2Te3 layer
structural properties during the device nanofabrication, we measured a sizeable
output voltage that can be unambiguously ascribed to a spin-charge
interconversion process
What does touch tell us about emotions in touchscreen-based gameplay?
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 ACM. It is posted here by permission of ACM for your personal use. Not for redistribution.Nowadays, more and more people play games on touch-screen mobile phones. This phenomenon raises a very interesting question: does touch behaviour reflect the playerâs emotional state? If possible, this would not only be a valuable evaluation indicator for game designers, but also for real-time personalization of the game experience. Psychology studies on acted touch behaviour show the existence of discriminative affective profiles. In this paper, finger-stroke features during gameplay on an iPod were extracted and their discriminative power analysed. Based on touch-behaviour, machine learning algorithms were used to build systems for automatically discriminating between four emotional states (Excited, Relaxed, Frustrated, Bored), two levels of arousal and two levels of valence. The results were very interesting reaching between 69% and 77% of correct discrimination between the four emotional states. Higher results (~89%) were obtained for discriminating between two levels of arousal and two levels of valence
Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy After Selective Embolization and Robot-Assisted Partial Nephrectomy: A Comparison of Short-Term Oncological and Functional Outcomes
BACKGROUND: Partial nephrectomy (PN) is the standard treatment for localized renal tumors. Laparoscopic PN (LPN) after selective embolization of tumor (LPNE) in a hybrid operating room has been developed to make LPN easier and safer. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes of LPNE and robot-assisted PN (RAPN).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent an LPNE at Angers University Hospital between May 2015 and April 2017, and a RAPN at Diaconesses Croix Saint Simon hospital between October 2014 and April 2017 were prospectively included. The functional outcomes were evaluated using the change of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 1 month, and the oncological outcomes were evaluated using the positive surgical margin (PSM) rate.
RESULTS: Fifty-seven patients underwent LPNE and 48 underwent RAPN. There was no difference between oncological and functional outcomes, with 2 PSM (4.4%) in the LPNE group and 4 PSM (10.3%) in the RAPN group (P = .32), and a mean change in eGFR at 1 month of -5.5% for LPNE and -8.3% for RAPN (P = .17). The mean surgical time was shorter in the LPNE group (150 vs. 195 minutes; P < .001), and mean estimated blood loss was less in the LPNE group (185 vs. 345 mL; P = .04).
CONCLUSION: The short-term oncological and functional outcomes for LPNE were comparable with those for RAPN. A longer follow-up and a larger cohort of patients would be necessary to verify the benefits of LPNE, which appears to be a very interesting alternative to RAPN
Heisenberg Spin Chains: Quantum-Classical Crossover and the Haldane Conjecture
A comprehensive investigation has been made of the spectral excitations and static properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains of spin 1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2, using Lanczös, Bethe Ansatz, and Monte Carlo techniques. An unusual and unanticipated crossover mechanism for spin chains with 1/2â€Sâ€â has been discovered. The validity of the Haldane conjecture concerning the presence of a spectral excitation gap for integerâspin chains has been investigated by exact finite chains calculations of (a) the primary singletâtriplet excitation gap, (b) higher excitation gaps, and (c) the Fourier transform of the ground statecorrelation functions. A new Monte Carlo method has extended the spinâ1 gap calculations to N=32
Endothelial-Mesenchymal Transition of Brain Endothelial Cells: Possible Role during Metastatic Extravasation
Cancer progression towards metastasis follows a defined sequence of events described as the metastatic cascade. For extravasation and transendothelial migration metastatic cells interact first with endothelial cells. Yet the role of endothelial cells during the process of metastasis formation and extravasation is still unclear, and the interaction between metastatic and endothelial cells during transendothelial migration is poorly understood. Since tumor cells are well known to express TGF-beta, and the compact endothelial layer undergoes a series of changes during metastatic extravasation (cell contact disruption, cytoskeletal reorganization, enhanced contractility), we hypothesized that an EndMT may be necessary for metastatic extravasation. We demonstrate that primary cultured rat brain endothelial cells (BEC) undergo EndMT upon TGF-beta 1 treatment, characterized by the loss of tight and adherens junction proteins, expression of fibronectin, beta 1-integrin, calponin and a-smooth muscle actin (SMA). B16/F10 cell line conditioned and activated medium (ACM) had similar effects: claudin-5 down-regulation, fibronectin and SMA expression. Inhibition of TGF-beta signaling during B16/F10 ACM stimulation using SB-431542 maintained claudin-5 levels and mitigated fibronectin and SMA expression. B16/F10 ACM stimulation of BECs led to phosphorylation of Smad2 and Smad3. SB-431542 prevented SMA up-regulation upon stimulation of BECs with A2058, MCF-7 and MDA-MB231 ACM as well. Moreover, B16/F10 ACM caused a reduction in trans-endothelial electrical resistance, enhanced the number of melanoma cells adhering to and transmigrating through the endothelial layer, in a TGF-beta-dependent manner. These effects were not confined to BECs: HUVECs showed TGF-beta-dependent SMA expression when stimulated with breast cancer cell line ACM. Our results indicate that an EndMT may be necessary for metastatic transendothelial migration, and this transition may be one of the potential mechanisms occurring during the complex phenomenon known as metastatic extravasation
FILTWAM and Voice Emotion Recognition
This paper introduces the voice emotion recognition part of our framework for improving learning through webcams and microphones (FILTWAM). This framework enables multimodal emotion recognition of learners during game-based learning. The main goal of this study is to validate the use of microphone data for a real-time and adequate interpretation of vocal expressions into emotional states were the software is calibrated with end users. FILTWAM already incorporates a valid face emotion recognition module and is extended with a voice emotion recognition module. This extension aims to provide relevant and timely feedback based upon learner's vocal intonations. The feedback is expected to enhance learnerâs awareness of his or her own behavior. Six test persons received the same computer-based tasks in which they were requested to mimic specific vocal expressions. Each test person mimicked 82 emotions, which led to a dataset of 492 emotions. All sessions were recorded on video. An overall accuracy of our software based on the requested emotions and the recognized emotions is a pretty good 74.6% for the emotions happy and neutral emotions; but will be improved for the lower values of an extended set of emotions. In contrast with existing software our solution allows to continuously and unobtrusively monitor learnersâ intonations and convert these intonations into emotional states. This paves the way for enhancing the quality and efficacy of game-based learning by including the learner's emotional states, and links these to pedagogical scaffolding. The Netherlands Laboratory for Lifelong Learning (NELLL) of the Open University of the Netherlands
