    Y-Chromosome Variation in Altaian Kazakhs Reveals a Common Paternal Gene Pool for Kazakhs and the Influence of Mongolian Expansions

    Kazakh populations have traditionally lived as nomadic pastoralists that seasonally migrate across the steppe and surrounding mountain ranges in Kazakhstan and southern Siberia. To clarify their population history from a paternal perspective, we analyzed the non-recombining portion of the Y-chromosome from Kazakh populations living in southern Altai Republic, Russia, using a high-resolution analysis of 60 biallelic markers and 17 STRs. We noted distinct differences in the patterns of genetic variation between maternal and paternal genetic systems in the Altaian Kazakhs. While they possess a variety of East and West Eurasian mtDNA haplogroups, only three East Eurasian paternal haplogroups appear at significant frequencies (C3*, C3c and O3a3c*). In addition, the Y-STR data revealed low genetic diversity within these lineages. Analysis of the combined biallelic and STR data also demonstrated genetic differences among Kazakh populations from across Central Asia. The observed differences between Altaian Kazakhs and indigenous Kazakhs were not the result of admixture between Altaian Kazakhs and indigenous Altaians. Overall, the shared paternal ancestry of Kazakhs differentiates them from other Central Asian populations. In addition, all of them showed evidence of genetic influence by the 13th century CE Mongol Empire. Ultimately, the social and cultural traditions of the Kazakhs shaped their current pattern of genetic variation

    Incidence and pathophysiology of atrioventricular block following mitral valve replacement and ring annuloplasty

    Background: In this retrospective study we evaluate the causative mechanisms underlying postoperative atrioventricular block (AVB) following mitral valve replacement and mitral valve annuloplasty. Methods: Between January 1990 and December 2003, 391 patients underwent mitral valve replacement or ring annuloplasty and quadrangular resection. Exclusion criteria were preoperative AV block, two or three valvular procedures, reoperations and procedures combined with coronary artery bypass grafting. The presence of the postoperative AVB was compared with preoperative and intraoperative variables. On 55 post-mortem specimens the relationship between the AV node, AV node artery and mitral valve annulus was investigated. Results: The mean age was 59±14 years and 44% of patients were female. Postoperatively AVB occurred in 92 (23.5%) patients. AVB III was found in 17 (4%) patents, in whom a pacemaker was implanted within median interval of 4 days. Second degree AVB occurred and first degree AVB in five (1.3%) and in 70 (18%) patients respectively. In dry dissected human hearts in 23% of investigated cases the AV node artery was discovered to run close to the annulus of the mitral valve. Conclusions: Data collected in this study showed that, sotalol and amiodarone as well as a prolonged cross-clamp time may slightly influence the 23% incidence of postoperative AVB. The morphological investigation showed that the AV node artery runs in close proximity to the annulus in 23% of cases. We speculate that damage of the AV node artery may play a role in development of AV

    A Measurement of Newton's Gravitational Constant

    A precision measurement of the gravitational constant GG has been made using a beam balance. Special attention has been given to determining the calibration, the effect of a possible nonlinearity of the balance and the zero-point variation of the balance. The equipment, the measurements and the analysis are described in detail. The value obtained for G is 6.674252(109)(54) 10^{-11} m3 kg-1 s-2.     A polynomial-time interior-point method for conic optimization, with inexact barrier evaluations

    We consider a primal-dual short-step interior-point method for conic convex optimization problems for which exact evaluation of the gradient and Hessian of the primal and dual barrier functions is either impossible or prohibitively expensive. As our main contribution, we show that if approximate gradients and Hessians of the primal barrier function can be computed, and the relative errors in such quantities are not too large, then the method has polynomial worst-case iteration complexity. (In particular, polynomial iteration complexity ensues when the gradient and Hessian are evaluated exactly.) In addition, the algorithm requires no evaluation---or even approximate evaluation---of quantities related to the barrier function for the dual cone, even for problems in which the underlying cone is not self-dual

    Universal Duality in Conic Convex Optimization

    Given a primal-dual pair of linear programs, it is known that if their optimal values are viewed as lying on the extended real line, then the duality gap is zero, unless both problems are infeasible, in which case the optimal values are +infinity and -infinity. In contrast, for optimization problems over nonpolyhedral convex cones, a nonzero duality gap can exist even in the case where the primal and dual problems are both feasible. For a pair of dual conic convex programs, we provide simple conditions on the onstraint matricesand cone under which the duality gap is zero for every choice of linear objective function and ight-hand-side We refer to this property as niversal duality Our conditions possess the following properties: (i) they are necessary and sufficient, in the sense that if (and only if) they do not hold, the duality gap is nonzero for some linear objective function and ight-hand-side (ii) they are metrically and topologically generic; and (iii) they can be verified by solving a single conic convex program. As a side result, we also show that the feasible sets of a primal conic convex program and its dual cannot both be bounded, unless they are both empty, and we relate this to universal duality

    Straightening of Thermal Fluctuations in Semi-Flexible Polymers by Applied Tension

    We investigate the propagation of a suddenly applied tension along a thermally excited semi-flexible polymer using analytical approximations, scaling arguments and numerical simulation. This problem is inherently non-linear. We find sub-diffusive propagation with a dynamical exponent of 1/4.     Twist and writhe dynamics of stiff filaments

    This letter considers the dynamics of a stiff filament, in particular the coupling of twist and bend via writhe. The time dependence of the writhe of a filament is Wr2∼Lt1/4W_r^2\sim L t^{1/4} for a linear filament and Wr2∼t1/2/LW_r^2\sim t^{1/2} / L for a curved filament. Simulations are used to study the relative importance of crankshaft motion and tube like motion in twist dynamics.
