Spectroscopy of the bright optical counterparts of X-ray sources in the direction of M 31. II
A recent survey of the Local Group spiral galaxy M 31 with XMM-Newton yielded
a large number of X-ray sources. This is the second in a series of papers with
the aim of identifying the optical counterparts of these X-ray sources. We have
obtained optical spectra for 21 bright optical counterparts of 20 X-ray sources
in the direction of M 31, using the 1.3-m Skinakas telescope in Crete, Greece.
For 17 of the 20 X-ray sources, we have identified the optical counterpart as a
normal late type star (of type F or later) in the foreground (i.e. in the Milky
Way). For two more sources there were two possible optical counterparts in each
case, while two more objects have X-ray properties that are not compatible with

Pulmonary function evaluation during and following Skylab space flights
Previous experience during the Apollo postflight exercise testing indicated no major changes in pulmonary function. Although pulmonary function has been studied in detail following exposure to hypoxic and hyperoxic environments, few studies have dealt with normoxic environments at reduced total pressure as encountered during the Skylab missions. Forced vital capacity was measured during the preflight and postflight periods of the Skylab 2 mission. Initial in-flight measurements of vital capacity were obtained during the last two weeks of the second manned mission (Skylab 3). Comprehensive pulmonary function screening was accomplished during the Skylab 4 mission. The primary measurements made during Skylab 4 testing included residual volume determination, closing volume, vital capacity, and forced vital capacity and its derivatives. In addition, comprehensive in-flight vital capacity measurements were made during the Skylab 4 mission. Vital capacity was decreased slightly during flight in all Skylab 4 crewmen. No major preflight to postflight changes were observed in the other parameters
Human pancreatic cancer cell lines do not express receptors for somatostatin.
The in vivo administration of somatostatin (SS) or its analogues is capable of suppressing the growth of pancreatic cancer in experimental animals. We examined the effects of SS-14 and its analogue RC-160 on the in vitro growth of two human pancreatic cancer cell lines MiaPaCa-2 and Panc-1 stimulated with epidermal growth factor (EGF) or insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Neither SS-14 nor RC-160 inhibited the growth of either cell line. In contrast RC-160 did inhibit the EGF-stimulated growth of a rat pancreatic cancer cell line AR42J. Binding studies with 125I-Tyr11 somatostatin revealed the presence of a single class of high affinity binding sites with a Kd of 0.20 +/- 0.05 nM and a Bmax of 2.1 +/- 0.26 pmoles mg-1 protein on AR42J but not displaceable binding was observed on MiaPaCa-2 or Panc-1. We conclude that lack of receptors accounts for the failure of SS-14 and RC-160 to influence the growth of human pancreatic cancer in vitro. These results, taken together with other findings, lead us to question the therapeutic efficacy of somatostatin and its analogues as mono-therapy in the treatment of human pancreatic cancer
Inhibition of pancreatic cancer cell growth in vitro by the tyrphostin group of tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
Tyrphostins are a group of low molecular weight synthetic inhibitors of protein tyrosine kinases (PTK). The intracellular domains of the receptors for epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) possess PTK activity. Since EGF, TGF-alpha and IGF-1 are considered to play an important role in the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells, we studied the effects of tyrphostins on the growth of three human pancreatic cancer cell lines (MiaPaCa-2, Panc-1 and CAV). The tyrphostins AG17, T23 and T47 all inhibited EGF and serum-stimulated DNA synthesis. AG17 was found to be the most potent of these agents and caused a dose-dependent but reversible inhibition of cell growth. Furthermore using an immunoblotting procedure we also found AG17 to inhibit EGF-induced tyrosine phosphorylation in the MiaPaCa-2 cell line. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors may prove to be useful agents for the treatment of pancreatic cancer
Thirteen new BL Lacertae objects discovered by an efficient x ray/radio/optical technique
The discovery of 13 serendipitous BL Lac objects in the Einstein IPC Slew Survey by means of x ray/radio vs. x ray/optical color-color diagrams and confirmation by optical spectroscopy are reported. These 13 BL Lacs were discovered using a technique which exploits the characteristic broad band spectra of BL Lacs. New VLA detections provide accurate fluxes (f(6 cm) is approximately 0.5 mJy) and 2 in. positions, facilitating the determination of an optical counterpart. All 13 new BL Lacs show essentially featureless optical spectra. Nine of these lie within the range of colors of known x ray selected BL Lacs. Of the remaining four, one is apparently x ray louder (by a factor of 1.5) or optically quieter (by 0.8 mags); and three are optically louder (by 1-1.3 mags) than x ray selected BL Lacs. Approximately 50 new BL Lacs in total are expected from VLA work and upcoming Australia Telescope observations, yielding a complete Slew Survey sample of approximately 90 BL Lacs
Isolated Gallbladder Rupture Due to Blunt Abdominal Trauma
Traumatic injury to the extrahepatic biliary system is rare and usually diagnosed at laparotomy when it is
associated with other visceral injuries. Isolated gallbladder rupture due to blunt abdominal trauma is even
rarer. The clinical presentation of gallbladder injury is variable, resulting in a delay in diagnosis and
treatment. Awareness to the possibilty of trauma to the extrahepatic biliary system enables early surgical
intervention and eliminates the high morbidity associated with delated diagnosis
Obscuration in the Host Galaxies of Soft X-ray Selected Seyferts
We define a new sample of 96 low-redshift (z<0.1), soft X-ray selected
Seyferts from the catalog of the Einstein Slew Survey (Elvis etal. 1992,
Plummer et al. 1994). We probe the geometry and column depth of obscuring
material in the host-galaxy disks using galaxian axial ratios determined mainly
from the Digitized Sky Survey. The distribution of host-galaxy axial ratios
clearly shows a bias against edge-on spirals, confirming the existence of a
geometrically thick layer of obscuring material in the host-galaxy planes. Soft
X-ray selection recovers some of the edge-on objects missed in UV and visible
surveys but still results in 30% incompleteness for Type 1's. We speculate that
thick rings of obscuring material like the ones we infer for these Seyferts
might be commonly present in early type spirals, sitting at the Inner Lindblad

Patterns of Classroom Organization in Classrooms Where Children Exhibit Higher and Lower Language Gains
Previous research suggests that the ways in which early childhood classrooms are organized may facilitate children’s language learning. However, different measures of classroom organization often yield inconsistent findings regarding child outcomes. In this study, we investigated multiple aspects of classroom organization across two time points in classrooms where children made varying language gains. Using a purposeful sample of 60 early childhood classrooms, 30 in which children made higher language gains and 30 in which children made lower language gains, we explored the organization of the physical classroom literacy environment, classroom management, classroom time, and classroom activities. Research Findings: Results indicated that the organization of classroom time and classroom activities, but not of the classroom literacy environment nor of classroom management, differed across classrooms. Differences between classrooms were particularly salient in the fall. Practice or Policy: Findings suggest similarities and differences in the organizational patterns of classrooms, both at the start of the school year and across time. This has implications for how early childhood classrooms are organized to facilitate children’s language learning and highlights the importance of supporting teachers with establishing classroom organization early in the school year. Furthermore, these results emphasize the value of using multiple measures when exploring classroom organization
Multi-transmission-line-beam interactive system
We construct here a Lagrangian field formulation for a system consisting of
an electron beam interacting with a slow-wave structure modeled by a possibly
non-uniform multiple transmission line (MTL). In the case of a single line we
recover the linear model of a traveling wave tube (TWT) due to J.R. Pierce.
Since a properly chosen MTL can approximate a real waveguide structure with any
desired accuracy, the proposed model can be used in particular for design
optimization. Furthermore, the Lagrangian formulation provides for: (i) a clear
identification of the mathematical source of amplification, (ii) exact
expressions for the conserved energy and its flux distributions obtained from
the Noether theorem. In the case of uniform MTLs we carry out an exhaustive
analysis of eigenmodes and find sharp conditions on the parameters of the
system to provide for amplifying regimes
