Hot and cold spots counts as probes of non-Gaussianity in the CMB

We introduce the numbers of hot and cold spots, nhn_h and ncn_c, of excursion sets of the CMB temperature anisotropy maps as statistical observables that can discriminate different non-Gaussian models. We numerically compute them from simulations of non-Gaussian CMB temperature fluctuation maps. The first kind of non-Gaussian model we study is the local type primordial non-Gaussianity. The second kind of models have some specific form of the probability distribution function from which the temperature fluctuation value at each pixel is drawn, obtained using HEALPIX. We find the characteristic non-Gaussian deviation shapes of nhn_h and ncn_c, which is distinct for each of the models under consideration. We further demonstrate that nhn_h and ncn_c carry additional information compared to the genus, which is just their linear combination, making them valuable additions to the Minkowski Functionals in constraining non-Gaussianity.Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in Ap

Background: Conflicting and limited high-quality prospective data are available on the associations between cam morphology and hip and groin symptoms and range of motion (ROM). Objectives: This cross-sectional cohort study investigated associations between cam morphology presence, size and duration and symptoms and ROM. Methods: Academy male football players (n = 49, 17-24 years) were included. Standardized antero-posterior pelvic and frog-leg lateral radiographs were obtained at baseline, 2.5- and 5-year follow-up. The femoral head-neck junction was quantified by: Visual score. Cam morphology (flattening or prominence), large cam (prominence). Alpha angle.

Experimental evidence that leaf litter decomposability and flammability are decoupled across gymnosperm species

Biological decomposition and wildfire are two predominant and alternative processes that can mineralize organic C in forest litter. Currently, the relationships between decomposition and fire are still poorly understood. We provide an empirical test of the hypothesized decoupling of surface litter bed decomposability and flammability, and the underlying traits and trait spectra. We employed a 41-species set of gymnosperms of very broad evolutionary and geographic spread, because of the wide range of (absent to frequent) fire regimes they are associated with. We found that the interspecific pattern of mass loss proportions in a "common garden" decomposition experiment was not correlated with any of the flammability parameters and an RDA analysis also showed that the decomposability and flammability of leaf litter in litter layers were decoupled across species. This decoupling originates from the former depending mostly on size and shape spectrum traits and the latter on PES traits and those trait spectra being virtually uncorrelated. Synthesis: Our results show that, indeed, leaf litter decomposability and flammability parameters are decoupled across species, and this decoupling can be explained by their different drivers in terms of trait spectra: chemical traits for decomposability and size-shape traits for litter layer flammability

Phenotypic variation in a family with partial androgen insensitivity syndrome explained by differences in 5alpha dihydrotestosterone availability

Mutations in the androgen receptor (AR) gene result in a wide range of phenotypes of the androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). Inter- and intrafamilial differences in the phenotypic expression of identical AR mutations are known, suggesting modifying factors in establishing the phenotype. Two 46,XY siblings with partial AIS sharing the same AR gene mutation, R846H, but showing very different phenotypes are studied. Their parents are first cousins. One sibling with grade 5 AIS was raised as a girl; the other sibling with grade 3 AIS was raised as a boy. In both siblings serum levels of hormones were measured; a sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) suppression test was completed; and mutation analysis of the AR gene, Scatchard, and SDS-PAGE analysis of the AR protein was performed. Furthermore, 5alpha-reductase 2 expression and activity in genital skin fibroblasts were investigated, and the 5alpha-reductase 2 gene was sequenced. The decrease in SHBG serum levels in a SHBG suppression test did not suggest differences in androgen sensitivity as the cause of the phenotypic variation. Also, androgen binding characteristics of the AR, AR expression levels, and the phosphorylation pattern of the AR on hormone binding were identical in both siblings. However, 5alpha-reductase 2 activity was normal in genital skin fibroblasts from the phenotypic male patient but undetectable in genital skin fibroblasts from the phenotypic female patient. The lack of 5alpha-reductase 2 activity was due to absent or reduced expression of 5alpha-reductase 2 in genital skin fibroblasts from the phenotypic female patient. Exon and flanking intron sequences of the 5alpha-reductase 2 gene showed no mutations in either siblin

Human plasma phospholipid transfer protein increases the antiatherogenic potential of high density lipoproteins in transgenic mice

    Get PDF
Plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) transfers phospholipids between lipoprotein particles and alters high density lipoprotein (HDL) subfraction patterns in vitro, but its physiological function is poorly understood. Transgenic mice that overexpress human PLTP were generated. Compared with wild-type mice, these mice show a 2.5- to 4.5-fold increase in PLTP activity in plasma. This results in a 30% to 40% decrease of plasma levels of HDL cholesterol. Incubation of plasma from transgenic animals at 37 degrees C reveals a 2- to 3-fold increase in the formation of pre-beta-HDL compared with plasma from wild-type mice. Although pre-beta-HDL is normally a minor subfraction of HDL, it is known to be a very efficient acceptor of peripheral cell cholesterol and a key mediator in reverse cholesterol transport. Further experiments show that plasma from transgenic animals is much more efficient in preventing the accumulation of intracellular cholesterol in macrophages than plasma from wild-type mice, despite lower total HDL concentrations. It is concluded that PLTP can act as an antiatherogenic factor preventing cellular cholesterol overload by generation of pre-beta-HDL

The need of data harmonization to derive robust empirical relationships between soil conditions and vegetation.

Question: Is it possible to improve the general applicability and significance of empirical relationships between abiotic conditions and vegetation by harmonization of temporal data? Location: The Netherlands. Methods: Three datasets of vegetation, recorded after periods with different meteorological conditions, were used to analyze relationships between soil moisture regime (expressed by the mean spring groundwater level - MSLt calculated for different periods) and vegetation (expressed by the mean indicator value for moisture regime Fm). For each releve, measured groundwater levels were interpolated and extrapolated to daily values for the period 1970-2000 by means of an impulse-response model. Sigmoid regression lines between MSLt and Fm were determined for each of the three datasets and for the combined dataset. Results: A measurement period of three years resulted in significantly different relationships between Fm and MSLt for the three datasets (F-test,/? <0.05>. The three regression lines only coincided for the mean spring groundwater level computed over the period 1970-2000 (AfSLclimate) and thus provided a general applicable relationship. Precipitation surplus prior to vegetation recordings strongly affected the relationships. Conclusions: Harmonization of time series data (1) eliminates biased measurements, (2) results in generally applicable relationships between abiotic and vegetation characteristics and (3) increases the goodness of fit of these relationships. The presented harmonization procedure can be used to optimize many relationships between soil and vegetation characteristics. © IAVS; Opulus Press Uppsala

How Well Do Couples Care When They Are Expecting Their First Child? Family and Dyadic Predictors of Parental Sensitivity in Expectant Couples

Belsky's Process Model points to family-of-origin (especially experiences of mistreatment in childhood) as well as personality and marital relations as determinants of parenting quality, including parental sensitive responsiveness. Parental sensitivity might be intuitively developed during pregnancy and affects perinatal mental health. However, there is a lack of studies investigating effects of family-of-origin and relationship perceptions on expectant couples' parental sensitive responsiveness. The aim of the presented study was to test mediation and moderation effects of perceived partner's empathic concern and retrospectively assessed abuse experienced in childhood on sensitive parental responsiveness operationalized as caretaking behaviors and emotional reactions to a crying life-like doll. One hundred eleven expectant couples (N = 222; age: Mwomen = 28.4 years, SD = 3.03; age: Mmen = 29.2 years, SD = 3.31; relationship duration: Myears = 6.8, SD = 3.43; gestational week: M = 31.3, SD = 4.58) assessed the extent to which they experienced physical and emotional abuse from their parents in childhood and rated their current partner's empathic concern. In the experimental procedure, couples reacted to a crying life-like doll and were assessed by trained psychologists using the modified Ainsworth Sensitivity Scale to measure couples' sensitive responsiveness. The results confirmed a significant mediational effect of perceived women's (and not men's) empathic concern for the relationship between the reported experience of abuse in family-
