    Pool boiling visualization on open microchannel surfaces

    The paper presents visualization investigations into pool boiling heat transfer for open minichannel surfaces. The experiments were carried out wih saturated water at atmospheric pressure. Parallel microchannels fabricated by machining were about 0.3 mm wide and 0.2 to 0.4 mm deep. High-speed videos were used as an aid to understanding the heat transfer mechanism. The visualization study aimed at identifying nucleation sites of the departing bubbles and determining their diameters and frequency at various superheats

    Effect of geometrical parameters of open microchannel surfaces on pool boiling heat transfer

    This study focuses on the effect of channel depth on the heat transfer coefficient during nucleate pool boiling. Experimental studies were performed for saturated deionized water, and Novec-649 as working fluids at atmospheric pressure. Copper surfaces were modified to form microchannels with different geometrical properties. The microchannels were from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm deep, 0.3 mm wide and spaced every 0.1 mm. The experiment was conducted for increasing heat flux up to the critical heat flux point. The surface modification provided an appreciably higher heat transfer coefficient compared to the smooth surface for all boiling liquids. The maximum heat transfer coefficient obtained exceeded 60 kW/m2K

    Perinatal Hypoxia-Ischemia Disrupts Striatal High-Affinity [ 3 H]Glutamate Uptake into Synaptosomes

    : We examined the impact of hypoxia-ischemia on high-affinity [ 3 H]glutamate uptake into a synaptosomal fraction prepared from immature rat corpus striatum. In 7-day-old pups the right carotid artery was ligated, and pups were exposed to 8% oxygen for 0, 0.5, 1, or 2.5 h, and allowed to recover for up to 24 h before they were killed. High-affinity glutamate uptakes in striatal synaptosomes derived from tissue ipsilateral and contralateral to ligation were compared. After 1 h of hypoxia plus ischemia, high-affinity glutamate uptake in the striatum was reduced by 54 ± 13% compared with values from the opposite (nonischemic) side of the brain (p < 0.01, t test versus ligates not exposed to hypoxia). There were similar declines after 2.5 h of hypoxiaischemia. Activity remained low after a 1 h recovery period in room air, but after 24 h of recovery, high-affinity glutamate uptake was equal bilaterally. Kinetic analysis revealed that loss of activity could be attributed primarily to a 40% reduction in the number of uptake sites. Hypoxia alone had no effect on high-affinity glutamate uptake although it reduced synaptosomal uptake of [ 3 H]3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-ethylamine. Addition of 1 mg/ml of bovine serum albumin to the incubation medium preferentia'ly stimulated high-affinity glutamate uptake in hypoxic-ischemic brain compared with its effects in normal tissue.     Is there loss or qualitative changes in the expression of thyroid peroxidase protein in thyroid epithelial cancer?

    There is disagreement concerning the expression of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) in thyroid cancer, some studies finding qualitative as well as quantitative differences compared to normal tissue. To investigate TPO protein expression and its antigenic properties, TPO was captured from a solubilizate of thyroid microsomes by a panel of murine anti-TPO monoclonal antibodies and detected with a panel of anti-human TPO IgGÎș Fab. TPO protein expression in 30 samples of malignant thyroid tissue was compared with TPO from adjacent normal tissues. Virtual absence of TPO expression was observed in 8 cases. In the remaining 22 malignant thyroid tumours the TPO protein level varied considerably from normal to nearly absent when compared to normal thyroid tissue or tissues from patients with Graves' disease (range less than 0.5 to more than 12.5 Όg mg−1 of protein). When expressed TPO displayed similar epitopes, to that of TPO from Graves' disease tissue. The results obtained by the TPO capturing method were confirmed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis with both microsomes and their solubilizates. The present results show that in about two-thirds of differentiated thyroid carcinomas, TPO protein is expressed, albeit to a more variable extent than normal; when present, TPO in malignant tissues is immunologically normal. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaignhttp://www.bjcancer.co

    Effect of Hypoxia on Expression of Selected Proteins Involved in Regulation of Apoptotic Activity in Striatum of Newborn Piglets

    The levels of selected neuroregulatory proteins that inhibit or promote apoptotic cell death were measured in the striatum of piglets subjected to precisely controlled 1 h hypoxic insult followed by 0, 2 and 4 h recovery and compared to sham operated animals. The anti-apoptotic proteins: there were increases in Survivin at 0 (157%, P = 0.031) and 4 h (171%, P = 0.033), in Bcl-XL at 0 (138%, P = 0.028) and 4 h (143%, P = 0.007), in VEGF at 4 h (185%, P = 0.019) and Hsp27 at 2 h (144%, P = 0.05) and 4 h (143%, P = 0.05). The pro-apoptotic proteins: caspases-1 and 7 increased at 4 h (135%, P = 0.05) and (129%, P = 0.038), respectively. Bim increased after 4 h (115%, P = 0.028), Apoptosis Inducing Factor after 2 h (127%, P = 0.048) and Calpain after 4 h (143% of control, P = 0.04). Hypoxia causes increase in levels of both anti- and pro-apoptotic proteins. Their relative activity determines the outcome in terms of cell damage and neuronal deficit

Do realizacji celu badaƄ, wykorzystano puƂapki glebowe Barbera. W badaniach wykazano, ĆŒe chrząszcze Carabidae istotnie liczniej występowaƂy na polu uprawnym. W siedlisku brzeĆŒnym odnotowano zdecydowanie wyĆŒsze bogactwo gatunkowe tych poĆŒytecznych owadĂłw. DuĆŒa liczba gatunkĂłw oznaczonych w obu siedliskach, wskazuje, ĆŒe drapieĆŒce te, mogą migrować z siedliska brzeĆŒnego na plantację pszenicy. Mogą tam, zatem, skuteczniej przyczynić się do ograniczenia występowania szkodnikĂłw.The aim of the study was to determine the differences between ground beetle abundance and their species structure on winter wheat field and adjacent uncultivated habitat. To realize this, Barber's pitfall traps were used. It was shown that adults of Carabidae were significantly abundant on arable field. But, in case of field margin much higher level of species diversity of this beneficial group was recorded. Higher number of species recognized in both biotopes indicates possibility of ground beetles for migration from boundary to wheat field. Thus, they can act as effective agents of biocontrol
