Bayesian Pronoun Interpretation in Mandarin Chinese
Kehler and Rohde (2013) proposed a Bayesian theory of pro-noun interpretation where the influence of world knowledgeemerges as effects on the prior and the influence of informationstructure as effects on the likelihood: P(referent|pronoun) ΞΌP(pronoun|referent)P(referent). Here we present two experi-ments on Mandarin Chinese that allow us to test the generalityof the theory for a language with different syntactic-semanticassociations than English. Manipulations involving two dif-ferent classes of implicit-causality verbs and passive vs. activevoice confirmed key predictions of the Bayesian theory: effectsof these manipulations on the prior and likelihood in produc-tion were consistently reflected in pronoun interpretation pref-erences. Quantitative analysis shows that the Bayesian modelis the best fit for Mandarin compared to two competing anal-yses. These results lend both qualitative and quantitative sup-port to a cross linguistically general Bayesian theory of pro-noun interpretation

Multi-functional anodes boost the transient power and durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells have been regarded as the most promising candidate for fuel cell vehicles and tools. Their broader adaption, however, has been impeded by cost and lifetime. By integrating a thin layer of tungsten oxide within the anode, which serves as a rapid-response hydrogen reservoir, oxygen scavenger, sensor for power demand, and regulator for hydrogen-disassociation reaction, we herein report proton exchange membrane fuel cells with significantly enhanced power performance for transient operation and low humidified conditions, as well as improved durability against adverse operating conditions. Meanwhile, the enhanced power performance minimizes the use of auxiliary energy-storage systems and reduces costs. Scale fabrication of such devices can be readily achieved based on the current fabrication techniques with negligible extra expense. This work provides proton exchange membrane fuel cells with enhanced power performance, improved durability, prolonged lifetime, and reduced cost for automotive and other applications
New Metabolites From the Co-culture of Marine-Derived Actinomycete Streptomyces rochei MB037 and Fungus Rhinocladiella similis 35
Co-culture of different microbes simulating the natural state of microbial community may produce potentially new compounds because of nutrition or space competition. To mine its metabolic potential in depth, co-culture of Streptomyces rochei MB037 with a gorgonian-derived fungus Rhinocladiella similis 35 was carried out to stimulate the production of new metabolites in this study, using pure cultivation as control. Five metabolites were isolated successfully from co-culture broth, including two new fatty acids with rare nitrile group, borrelidins J and K (1 and 2), one chromone derivative as a new natural product, 7-methoxy-2,3-dimethylchromone-4-one (3), together with two known 18-membered macrolides, borrelidin (4) and borrelidin F (5). The structures of 1β3 were elucidated by using a combination of NMR and MS spectroscopy, ester hydrolysis, and optical rotation methods. Interestingly, 1 and 2 were obtained only in co-culture. Though 3 was gained from either co-culture or single culture, its production was increased significantly by co-culture. Compound 1 exhibited significant antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with a MIC value of 0.195 ΞΌg/mL
#ADD-TO-CART: APPLIED FINANCIAL LITERACY AND ONLINE PURCHASE DECISION-MAKING OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS
Financial literacy is becoming a pivotal skill in navigating the marketplaces within the predominant rising digital
branches of trading domains; however, there remains a concerning gap in the purchasing behavior of adolescents,
who are its primary users. With this in mind, the main objective of our research is to determine whether there is a
relationship between a student's level of financial literacy and their online purchase decision-making. The researchers
employed an explanatory mixed approach and purposive sampling to identify respondents from Immaculate Conception
College of Balayan, Inc. A 5-point Likert scale survey was utilized to collect data from 66 respondents, followed by
semi-structured interviews with 10 selected participants. The results showed a moderately positive correlation between
a student's financial literacy and online purchase decisions, as determined by the Pearson correlation coefficient. Thus,
the thematic analysis revealed that respondents generally have good financial literacy, emphasizing factors like pricing,
online reviews, and product ratings when making digital marketplace decisions. However, there are notable gaps in
their understanding of basic financial concepts and their ability to apply them in real-life situations. To effectively
enhance studentsβ financial literacy and online purchasing decisions, a holistic approach is necessary, including targeted
interventions, practical applications, and continuous adaptation to evolving consumer behaviors. Educational
institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders should work together to create comprehensive programs that provide
students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to negotiate real-world financial situations and make sound
judgments in the digital commerce ecosystem. By emphasizing practical learning, key financial concepts, and trustbuilding approaches, educators may empower students to become responsible consumers capable of managing their
resources successfully and ethically
Associations of IL-4, IL-4R, and IL-13 Gene Polymorphisms in Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis in China: A Case-Control Study
Background: The IL-4, IL-4 receptor (IL4R), and IL-13 genes are crucial immune factors and may influence the course of various diseases. In the present study, we investigated the association between the potential functional polymorphisms in IL-4, IL-4R, and IL-13 and coal workers β pneumoconiosis (CWP) risk in a Chinese population. Methods: Six polymorphisms (C-590T in IL-4, Ile50Val, Ser478Pro, and Gln551Arg in IL-4R, C-1055T and Arg130Gln in IL-13) were genotyped and analyzed in a case-control study of 556 CWP and 541 control subjects. Hsa-miR-196a2 Rs11614913 Polymorphism Contributes to Cancer Susceptibility: Evidence from 15 Case-Control Studies
BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a family of endogenous, small and noncoding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression by suppressing translation or degrading mRNAs. Recently, many studies investigated the association between hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 polymorphism and cancer risk, which showed inconclusive results. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a meta-analysis of 15 studies that included 9,341 cancer cases and 10,569 case-free controls. We assessed the strength of the association, using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Overall, individuals with the TC/CC genotypes were associated with higher cancer risk than those with the TT genotype (OR=1.18, 95% CI=1.03-1.34, P<0.001 for heterogeneity test). In the stratified analyses, we observed that the CC genotype might modulate breast cancer risk (OR=1.11, 95%CI=1.01-1.23, Pheterogeneity=0.210) and lung cancer risk (OR=1.25, 95%CI=1.06-1.46, Pheterogeneity=0.958), comparing with the TC/TT genotype. Moreover, a significantly increased risk was found among Asian populations in a dominant model (TC/CC versus TT, OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.07-1.43, Pheterogeneity=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: These findings supported that hsa-miR-196a2 rs11614913 polymorphism may contribute to the susceptibility of cancers
Comparative Genomics Study of Multi-Drug-Resistance Mechanisms in the Antibiotic-Resistant Streptococcus suis R61 Strain
BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis infections are a serious problem for both humans and pigs worldwide. The emergence and increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant S. suis strains pose significant clinical and societal challenges. RESULTS: In our study, we sequenced one multi-drug-resistant S. suis strain, R61, and one S. suis strain, A7, which is fully sensitive to all tested antibiotics. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the R61 strain is phylogenetically distinct from other S. suis strains, and the genome of R61 exhibits extreme levels of evolutionary plasticity with high levels of gene gain and loss. Our results indicate that the multi-drug-resistant strain R61 has evolved three main categories of resistance. CONCLUSIONS: Comparative genomic analysis of S. suis strains with diverse drug-resistant phenotypes provided evidence that horizontal gene transfer is an important evolutionary force in shaping the genome of multi-drug-resistant strain R61. In this study, we discovered novel and previously unexamined mutations that are strong candidates for conferring drug resistance. We believe that these mutations will provide crucial clues for designing new drugs against this pathogen. In addition, our work provides a clear demonstration that the use of drugs has driven the emergence of the multi-drug-resistant strain R61
Combining Asian and European genome-wide association studies of colorectal cancer improves risk prediction across racial and ethnic populations
Polygenic risk scores (PRS) have great potential to guide precision colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention by identifying those at higher risk to undertake targeted screening. However, current PRS using European ancestry data have sub-optimal performance in non-European ancestry populations, limiting their utility among these populations. Towards addressing this deficiency, we expand PRS development for CRC by incorporating Asian ancestry data (21,731 cases; 47,444 controls) into European ancestry training datasets (78,473 cases; 107,143 controls). The AUC estimates (95% CI) of PRS are 0.63(0.62-0.64), 0.59(0.57-0.61), 0.62(0.60-0.63), and 0.65(0.63-0.66) in independent datasets including 1681-3651 cases and 8696-115,105 controls of Asian, Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White, respectively. They are significantly better than the European-centric PRS in all four major US racial and ethnic groups (p-values < 0.05). Further inclusion of non-European ancestry populations, especially Black/African American and Latinx/Hispanic, is needed to improve the risk prediction and enhance equity in applying PRS in clinical practice
