Spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell theory and loop quantum gravity corrections
Effects of inverse triad corrections and (point) holonomy corrections,
occuring in loop quantum gravity, are considered on the properties of
Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes. The version of inverse triad corrections with
unmodified constraint algebra reveals the possibility of occurrence of three
horizons (over a finite range of mass) and also shows a mass threshold beyond
which the inner horizon disappears. For the version with modified constraint
algebra, coordinate transformations are no longer a good symmetry. The
covariance property of spacetime is regained by using a \emph{quantum} notion
of mapping from phase space to spacetime. The resulting quantum effects in both
versions of these corrections can be associated with renormalization of either
mass, charge or wave function. In neither of the versions, Newton's constant is
renormalized. (Point) Holonomy corrections are shown to preclude the undeformed
version of constraint algebra as also a static solution, though
time-independent solutions exist. A possible reason for difficulty in
constructing a covariant metric for these corrections is highlighted.
Furthermore, the deformed algebra with holonomy corrections is shown to imply
signature change.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures, matches published versio
Polymer quantization of CGHS model- I
We present a polymer(loop) quantization of a two dimensional theory of
dilatonic gravity known as the CGHS model. We recast the theory as a
parametrized free field theory on a flat 2-dimensional spacetime and quantize
the resulting phase space using techniques of loop quantization. The resulting
(kinematical) Hilbert space admits a unitary representation of the spacetime
diffeomorphism group. We obtain the complete spectrum of the theory using a
technique known as group averaging and perform quantization of Dirac
observables on the resulting Hilbert space. We argue that the algebra of Dirac
observables gets deformed in the quantum theory. Combining the ideas from
parametrized field theory with certain relational observables, evolution is
defined in the quantum theory in the Heisenberg picture. Finally the dilaton
field is quantized on the physical Hilbert space which carries information
about quantum geometry.Comment: 50 pages, 2 figure
From the discrete to the continuous - towards a cylindrically consistent dynamics
Discrete models usually represent approximations to continuum physics.
Cylindrical consistency provides a framework in which discretizations mirror
exactly the continuum limit. Being a standard tool for the kinematics of loop
quantum gravity we propose a coarse graining procedure that aims at
constructing a cylindrically consistent dynamics in the form of transition
amplitudes and Hamilton's principal functions. The coarse graining procedure,
which is motivated by tensor network renormalization methods, provides a
systematic approximation scheme towards this end. A crucial role in this coarse
graining scheme is played by embedding maps that allow the interpretation of
discrete boundary data as continuum configurations. These embedding maps should
be selected according to the dynamics of the system, as a choice of embedding
maps will determine a truncation of the renormalization flow.Comment: 22 page
Loop Quantum Cosmology: A Status Report
The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the current state of
the art in loop quantum cosmology for three sets of audiences: young
researchers interested in entering this area; the quantum gravity community in
general; and, cosmologists who wish to apply loop quantum cosmology to probe
modifications in the standard paradigm of the early universe. An effort has
been made to streamline the material so that, as described at the end of
section I, each of these communities can read only the sections they are most
interested in, without a loss of continuity.Comment: 138 pages, 15 figures. Invited Topical Review, To appear in Classical

LHC Magnet Tests: Operational Techniques and Empowerment for Successful Completion
The LHC magnet tests operation team developed various innovative techniques, particularly since early 2004, to complete the superconductor magnet tests by Feb. 2007. Overall and cryogenic priority handling, rapid on-bench thermal cycling, rule-based goodness evaluation on round-the-clock basis, multiple, mashed web systems are some of these techniques applied with rigour for successful tests completion in time. This paper highlights these operation empowerment tools which had a pivotal role for success. A priority handling method was put in place to enable maximum throughput from twelve test benches, having many different constraints. For the cryogenics infrastructure, it implied judicious allocation of limited resources to the benches. Rapid On-Bench Thermal Cycle was a key strategy to accelerate magnets tests throughput, saving time and simplifying logistics. First level magnet appraisal was developed for 24 hr decision making so as to prepare a magnet further for LHC or keep it on standby. Web based systems (Tests Management and E-Traveller) were other essential ideas to track & coordinate various stages of tests handled by different teams
