Dynamical reduction of the dimensionality of exchange interactions and the "spin-liquid" phase of -(BEDT-TTF)
We show that the anisotropy of the effective spin model for the dimer Mott
insulator phase of -(BEDT-TTF) salts is dramatically different
from that of the underlying tight-binding model. Intra-dimer quantum
interference results in a model of coupled spin chains, where frustrated
interchain interactions suppress long-range magnetic order. Thus, we argue, the
"spin liquid" phase observed in some of these materials is a remnant of the
Tomonaga-Luttinger physics of a single chain. This is consistent with previous
experiments and resolves some outstanding puzzles. An erratum [Phys. Rev. Lett.

Towards mechanomagnetics in elastic crystals: insights from [Cu(acac)]
We predict that the magnetic properties of \cuacac, an elastically flexible
crystal, change dramatically when the crystal is bent. We find that unbent
\cuacac\ is an almost perfect Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Broken-symmetry
density functional calculations reveal that the magnetic exchange interactions
along the chains is an order of magnitude larger than the interchain exchange.
The geometrically frustrated interchain interactions cannot magnetically order
the material at any experimentally accessible temperature. The ordering
temperature (), calculated from the chain random phase approximation,
increases by approximately 24 orders of magnitude when the material is bent. We
demonstrate that geometric frustration both suppresses and enhances the
sensitivity of to bending. In \cuacac, is extremely sensitive to
bending, but remains too low for practical applications, even when bent.
Partially frustrated materials could achieve the balance of high and good
sensitivity to bending required for practical applications of mechanomagnetic
elastic crystals
Benchmark Calculations for Perchlorate from Three Human Cohorts
The presence of low concentrations of perchlorate in some drinking water sources has led to concern regarding potential effects on the thyroid. In a recently published report, the National Academy of Sciences indicated that the perchlorate dose required to cause hypothyroidism in adults would probably be > 0.40 mg/kg-day for months or longer. In this study, we calculated benchmark doses for perchlorate from thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (T(4)) serum indicators from two occupational cohorts with long-term exposure to perchlorate, and from a clinical study of volunteers exposed to perchlorate for 2 weeks. The benchmark dose for a particular serum indicator was defined as the dose predicted to cause an additional 5 or 10% of persons to have a serum measurement outside of the normal range. Using the data from the clinical study, we estimated the half-life of perchlorate in serum at 7.5 hr and the volume of distribution at 0.34 L/kg. Using these estimates and measurements of perchlorate in serum or urine, doses in the occupational cohorts were estimated and used in benchmark calculations. Because none of the three studies found a significant effect of perchlorate on TSH or free T(4), all of the benchmark dose estimates were indistinguishable from infinity. The lower 95% statistical confidence limits on benchmark doses estimated from a combined analysis of the two occupational studies ranged from 0.21 to 0.56 mg/kg-day for free T(4) index and from 0.36 to 0.92 mg/kg-day for TSH. An examination of the molecular mechanisms controlling the tissue accumulation of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in cattle
End of project reportLong chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) have demonstrable and potential human health benefits in terms of preventing cancer, diabetes, chronic inflammation, obesity and coronary heart disease. Supplementation of cattle diets with a blend of oils rich in n-3 PUFA and linoleic acid have a synergistic effect on the accumulation of ruminal and tissue concentrations of trans vaccenic acid (TVA), the main substrate for ?-9 desaturase which is responsible for de novo tissue synthesis of the cis 9, trans 11 isomer of CLA. This dietary strategy translates into increases in milk concentrations of CLA in dairy cows; however, concentrations in the muscle of beef animals have not always been increased. There is an apparent paradox in that n-3 PUFA supplementation enhances ruminal synthesis of trans-vaccenic acid (TVA), but then inhibits its conversion to CLA possibly through altering the activity of ?-9 desaturase. Recently, the promoter regions of the bovine ?- 9 desaturase gene has been isolated and analysed and has been shown to contain a conserved PUFA response region
Active damping application to the shuttle RMS
Control Structure Interaction (CSI) is a relatively new technology developed over the last 10 to 15 years for application to large flexible space vehicles. The central issue is recognition that high performance control systems necessary for good spacecraft performance may adversely interact with the dynamics of the spacecraft structures, a problem increasingly aggravated by the large size and reduced stiffness of modern spacecraft structural designs. The CSI analysis and design methods were developed to avoid interactions while maintaining spacecraft performance without exceeding structural capabilities, but they remain largely unvalidated by hardware experiments or demonstrations, particularly in-space flight demonstrations. One recent proposal for a low cost flight validation of CSI technology is to demonstrate active damping augmentation of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS). An analytical effort to define the potential for such an active damping augmentation demonstration to improve the structural dynamic response of the RMS following payload maneuvers is described. It is hoped that this study will lead to an actual inflight CSI test with the RMS using existing shuttle hardware to the maximum extent possible. By using the existing hardware, the flight demonstration results may eventually be of direct benefit to actual Space Shuttle RMS operations, especially during the construction of the Space Station Freedom
