Importance of carotid intimal medial thickness measurement in patients with coronary artery disease
Background: Prevalence of CAD in urban India is about double that of rural India and about 4-fold higher than in United States. Mortality related to CAD is high in Indian Population. Early diagnosis can prevent the CAD related morbidity and mortality. Aims and objectives is to study and compare the CIMT among the patients with CAD and asymptomatic control group. Methods: Hundred patients with CAD were studied for the CIMT and compared with age and sex matched asymptomatic control subjects in Department of Medicine of G. R. Medical College, Gwalior for one year from 2012 to 2013. Details on history, risk factors and presenting symptoms were recorded for all. High resolution B mode ultrasonography was performed to assess CIMT of carotid arteries. Results: CAD was more prevalent among males (78%) having mean age of 56.82±8.91 years. Majority of CAD patients had dyslipidemia (42%) followed by hypertension (21%), diabetes (13%) and smoking (17%). Majority of the CAD patients had chest pain (98%) followed by breathlessness (54%) and sweating (12%) as the most common presenting symptom. Mean CIMT was significantly more among the CAD patients (0.76±0.34) as compared to those without it (0.63±0.22) (p<0.001).Conclusions: CIMT was found to be more in CAD as compared to asymptomatic control subjects. CIMT can be an important tool for assessing CAD and atherosclerosis
Prevalence and pattern of congenital heart diseases in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, India: diagnosed clinically and by trans-thoracic-two-dimensional echocardiography
Background: To find the prevalence and pattern of congenital heart diseases (CHD) at a Semi-Urban teaching hospital in Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, India. Methods: A thorough history, clinical examination and Trans-Thoracic-Two-Dimensional Echocardiography (TTE) was done for all the live birth, children up to 18years of age and patients between 18 to 25 years, who were referred or presented to the Department of Medicine, Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences, Bommakal, Karimnagar (AP), over a period of 5 years from July 2008 through June 2013. Those suspected to having a CHD or referred in our department, were further evaluated with: Clinically, Twelve-Lead-Surface Electrocardiography, Chest Radiography and the diagnosis was confirmed by TTE. Trans-Thoracic-Two-Dimensional Echocardiography, M-Mode, Color flow doppler and Spectral doppler echocardiography was done in all patients in the various views. Results: Total 13,554 patients were examined and underwent TTE. Out of 13,554 patients 116 were identified as having congenital heart diseases, thus giving a prevalence of 8.55 per 1,000 live births. Isolated Ventricular septal defect (28.44%), isolated atrial septal defect (18.10%), Patent ductus arteriosus (10.34%), isolated congenital pulmonary stenosis (6.03%) and tetralogy of Fallot’s (6.03%), were the commonest defects observed and confirmed by TTE. TOF was the main cyanotic CHD (6.03%), with the prevalence of 0.51% per 1,000 live births. VSD, ASD and PDA were more prevalent in males. TOF and Complete A.V. Canal defect was prevalent in females. All small size muscular and perimembranous VSD was closed spontaneously. Spontaneous closure rate of 75.00% in Muscular VSD and 52.17% in perimembranous VSD was observed. Spontaneous closure rate of Ostium secundum type ASD was 53.33%. Conclusions: The prevalence of CHD at a tertiary teaching hospital (CAIMS, Bommakal, Karimnagar, AP, India), is 8.55 per 1,000 live births. VSD, ASD, PDA are the most common acyanotic and TOF was the commonest cyanotic congenital heart defects respectively. Non-Invasive Cardiac diagnostic technique (like TTE) plays major in the diagnosis of CHD. When clinical evidences lead to suspicion of congenital heart defect, an echocardiography should be performed immediately.

Methodology to map spatial variability of available nutrients in area of intensively growing potato (Solanum tuberosum) using remote sensing and GIS
A methodology is developed for mapping spatial variability of available nutrients of soils of a pocket growing potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) crop using GIS. For this purpose potato growing pockets of the Jalandhar district were demarcated based on the available information, ground truth and classification of the IRS P6 AWiFS image. The classified potato area in the image was taken as background to generate the sampling site map and representative soil samples of potato fields from these sites were collected along with geographical coordinates using GPS receiver(ETREX-VISTA, Garmin). Values of different parameters (like pH, OC, available P and K and micronutrients) were tagged with corresponding points and interpolation maps for each individual parameters were prepared using suitable semivariogram and kriging in remote sensing GIS software. These prepared maps were further classified giving suitable ranges of different soil parameters
Breeding tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop cultivated in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Low productivity in India is due to occurrence of both biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the biotic stresses, tomato leaf curl disease, bacterial wilt, early blight and Groundnut Bud Necrosis Virus disease have become serious production constraints causing considerable yield loss in the major tomato growing areas of the country. Adoption of multiple disease resistant varieties or F1 hybrids would be the most appropriate way to address these diseases. At ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru systematic breeding strategies were employed to pyramid genes for resistance to early blight, bacterial wilt and tomato leaf curl diseases and to develop advanced breeding lines& F1 hybrids with triple disease resistance. Stable source of resistance to early blight and bi-partite begomo-virus (Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus) has been identified in Solanum habrochaites LA-1777. Validation with molecular markers linked to tomato leaf curl virus resistance revealed that LA-1777 carryTy2 and other putative resistant genes. Several high yielding dual purpose hybrids were also developed for fresh market and processing with high level of resistance to multiple diseases. Cherry tomato lines have also been bred for high TSS, total carotenoids, total phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, acidity and lycopene content. IIHR-249-1, IIHR-2101 (Solanum habrochaites LA-1777), IIHR- 2866 and IIHR-2864 recorded high values for quality parameters like total carotenoids, lycopene, vitamin C, total phenols, flavonoids and TSS. Drought tolerant root stock has been developed by an interspecific cross between S. habrochaites LA-1777 and S. lycopersicum (15 SB SB). Resistant sources have also been identified against Tuta absoluta, a serious insect pest reported from major tomato growing areas in the country in recent time. High temperature tolerant breeding lines are in pipe line
