The 1991-1992 project summaries
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin participated in seven cooperative design projects this year. Six of the projects were associated with the Johnson Space Center and include the design of a thermal control system for an inflatable lunar habitat module, a vibration isolation system for a space shuttle cycle ergometer, a radiator shading device for a lunar outpost, a reusable astronaut safety tether, a resistive exercise device for use on the space shuttle, and a fleet of autonomous regolith throwing devices for radiation shielding of lunar habitats. The seventh project is associated with the Jet Propulsion Lab and involves the design of a shock absorbing wheel for a small six-wheeled Martian rover vehicle
Structure and expression of the maize (Zea mays L.) SUN-domain protein gene family: evidence for the existence of two divergent classes of SUN proteins in plants
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The nuclear envelope that separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm provides a surface for chromatin attachment and organization of the cortical nucleoplasm. Proteins associated with it have been well characterized in many eukaryotes but not in plants. SUN (Sad1p/Unc-84) domain proteins reside in the inner nuclear membrane and function with other proteins to form a physical link between the nucleoskeleton and the cytoskeleton. These bridges transfer forces across the nuclear envelope and are increasingly recognized to play roles in nuclear positioning, nuclear migration, cell cycle-dependent breakdown and reformation of the nuclear envelope, telomere-led nuclear reorganization during meiosis, and karyogamy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found and characterized a family of maize SUN-domain proteins, starting with a screen of maize genomic sequence data. We characterized five different maize <it>ZmSUN </it>genes <it>(ZmSUN1-5)</it>, which fell into two classes (probably of ancient origin, as they are also found in other monocots, eudicots, and even mosses). The first (<it>ZmSUN1</it>, <it>2</it>), here designated canonical C-terminal SUN-domain (CCSD), includes structural homologs of the animal and fungal SUN-domain protein genes. The second (<it>ZmSUN3, 4, 5</it>), here designated plant-prevalent mid-SUN 3 transmembrane (PM3), includes a novel but conserved structural variant SUN-domain protein gene class. Mircroarray-based expression analyses revealed an intriguing pollen-preferred expression for <it>ZmSUN5 </it>mRNA but low-level expression (50-200 parts per ten million) in multiple tissues for all the others. Cloning and characterization of a full-length cDNA for a PM3-type maize gene, <it>ZmSUN4</it>, is described. Peptide antibodies to ZmSUN3, 4 were used in western-blot and cell-staining assays to show that they are expressed and show concentrated staining at the nuclear periphery.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The maize genome encodes and expresses at least five different SUN-domain proteins, of which the PM3 subfamily may represent a novel class of proteins with possible new and intriguing roles within the plant nuclear envelope. Expression levels for <it>ZmSUN</it>1-4 are consistent with basic cellular functions, whereas <it>ZmSUN</it>5 expression levels indicate a role in pollen. Models for possible topological arrangements of the CCSD-type and PM3-type SUN-domain proteins are presented.</p
Testing for Budget Constraint Effects in a National Advisory Referendum Survey on the Kyoto Protocol
In contrast to providing standard reminders about remembering household budgets, does asking survey respondents about their discretionary income and its use affect their voting responses in a national advisory referendum survey? We explore this question using U.S. household data from a unique set of multi-mode random samples (telephone and Internet surveys), and an advisory referendum concerning the Kyoto Protocol. The contingent valuation method is applied to estimate household willingness to pay (WTP) for a split-sample treatment: respondents who only received a standard reminder of household budgets (control group) versus respondents who received two mental accounting-type questions on discretionary income and its uses (treatment group). Results indicate that the treatment significantly influences voting responses and lowers estimated household WTP.budget constraint, contingent valuation, Kyoto Protocol, mental accounts, referendum, Environmental Economics and Policy,
Exploring the Beta Model Using Proportional Budget Information in a Contingent Valuation Study
Using a set of random telephone and Internet (web-based) survey samples for a national advisory referendum, we implement Beta models to handle proportional budget information, and allow for consistency in modeling assumptions and the calculation of estimated willingness to pay (WTP). Results indicate significant budget constraint effects and demonstrate the potential for Beta models in handling mental-accounting type information.Beta model
Study of Magnetic Properties of A_2B^'NbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, (BaSr): and B^'=Fe and Mn) double perovskites
We have studied the magnetic properties of Ba_2FeNbO_6 and Ba_2MnNbO_6. it is
seen that Ba_2FeNbO_6 is an antiferromagnet with a weak ferromagnetic behaviour
at 5K while Ba_2MnNbO_6 shows two magnetic transitions one at 45 K and the
other at 12K. Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements at room temperature
show that the Mn compound does not show any Jahn-Teller distortion. It is also
seen that the Neel temperature of the A_2FeNbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, BaSr) compounds do
not vary significantly. However variations in the average A-site ionic radius
influence the formation of short range correlations that persist above T_N.Comment: 10 oages, 5 figures, MMM, to appear in J.Appl.Phy
Large Scales - Long Times: Adding High Energy Resolution to SANS
The Neutron Spin Echo (NSE) variant MIEZE (Modulation of IntEnsity by Zero
Effort), where all beam manipulations are performed before the sample position,
offers the possibility to perform low background SANS measurements in strong
magnetic fields and depolarising samples. However, MIEZE is sensitive to
differences \DeltaL in the length of neutron flight paths through the
instrument and the sample. In this article, we discuss the major influence of
\DeltaL on contrast reduction of MIEZE measurements and its minimisation.
Finally we present a design case for enhancing a small-angle neutron scattering
(SANS) instrument at the planned European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund,
Sweden, using a combination of MIEZE and other TOF options, such as TISANE
offering time windows from ns to minutes. The proposed instrument allows
studying fluctuations in depolarizing samples, samples exposed to strong
magnetic fields, and spin-incoherently scattering samples in a straightforward
way up to time scales of \mus at momentum transfers up to 0.01 {\AA}-1, while
keeping the instrumental effort and costs low.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure
The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer consensus statement on immunotherapy for the treatment of prostate carcinoma.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy and second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. In recent years, several new agents, including cancer immunotherapies, have been approved or are currently being investigated in late-stage clinical trials for the management of advanced prostate cancer. Therefore, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) convened a multidisciplinary panel, including physicians, nurses, and patient advocates, to develop consensus recommendations for the clinical application of immunotherapy for prostate cancer patients. To do so, a systematic literature search was performed to identify high-impact papers from 2006 until 2014 and was further supplemented with literature provided by the panel. Results from the consensus panel voting and discussion as well as the literature review were used to rate supporting evidence and generate recommendations for the use of immunotherapy in prostate cancer patients. Sipuleucel-T, an autologous dendritic cell vaccine, is the first and currently only immunotherapeutic agent approved for the clinical management of metastatic castrate resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The consensus panel utilized this model to discuss immunotherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer, issues related to patient selection, monitoring of patients during and post treatment, and sequence/combination with other anti-cancer treatments. Potential immunotherapies emerging from late-stage clinical trials are also discussed. As immunotherapy evolves as a therapeutic option for the treatment of prostate cancer, these recommendations will be updated accordingly
