    Roundabout accident prediction model: random-parameter negative binomial approach

    Roundabouts have been used widely on all road classes in the United Kingdom because they are considered safer than other types of intersections in general. The objective of this study was to examine geometric and traffic characteristics and their influences on the number of accidents. Data from each of 70 roundabouts (with 284 approaches) included all recorded vehicle accidents as well as geometric and traffic characteristics for the entire roundabout, within circulatory lanes, and at roundabout approaches. Resulting estimates were compared with those from random-parameter and fixed-parameter negative binomial count data models. The random-parameter results provided better goodness of fit than the fixed-parameter results, and more variables were found to be significant. Significant variables that influenced the number of accidents were total approach traffic, truck percentage, entry width, inscribed circle diameter, number of lanes, and presence of traffic signals

    Imbibition in Disordered Media

    The physics of liquids in porous media gives rise to many interesting phenomena, including imbibition where a viscous fluid displaces a less viscous one. Here we discuss the theoretical and experimental progress made in recent years in this field. The emphasis is on an interfacial description, akin to the focus of a statistical physics approach. Coarse-grained equations of motion have been recently presented in the literature. These contain terms that take into account the pertinent features of imbibition: non-locality and the quenched noise that arises from the random environment, fluctuations of the fluid flow and capillary forces. The theoretical progress has highlighted the presence of intrinsic length-scales that invalidate scale invariance often assumed to be present in kinetic roughening processes such as that of a two-phase boundary in liquid penetration. Another important fact is that the macroscopic fluid flow, the kinetic roughening properties, and the effective noise in the problem are all coupled. Many possible deviations from simple scaling behaviour exist, and we outline the experimental evidence.     Islamic schools in the United States and England: Implications for integration and social cohesion

    Debates over faith-based schools have resurfaced in recent years, due largely to an increase in Islamic schools in the West and concerns regarding their role vis-a-vis social cohesion. Such debates typically occur in the public and political realms, with less academic attention to the issue. This study addresses this gap by focusing on Islamic schools in the US and England. The article draws on extensive qualitative data collected over 20 months at three Islamic schools to understand the experiences of Muslim students and their families. Contrary to popular perceptions, the findings suggest that Islamic schools can facilitate the participation of Muslims in mainstream institutions by equipping them with the cultural capital needed to navigate in non-Muslim arenas. Paradoxically, the findings also indicate that attending Islamic schools does not necessarily translate into greater levels of religiosity among Muslim youth; in some cases it even turned them away from the religion
