Star Formation Histories of Nearby Elliptical Galaxies. II. Merger Remnant Sample
This work presents high spectroscopic observations of a sample of six
suspected merger remnants, selected primarily on the basis of H{\sc i} tidal
debris detections. Single stellar population analysis of these galaxies
indicates that their ages, metallicities, and -enhancement ratios are
consistent with those of a representative sample of nearby elliptical galaxies.
The expected stellar population of a recent merger remnant, young age combined
with low [/Fe], is not seen in any H{\sc i}-selected galaxy. However,
one galaxy (NGC~2534), is found to deviate from the -plane in the sense
expected for a merger remnant. Another galaxy (NGC~7332), selected by other
criteria, best matches the merger remnant expectations.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted by A
Influence of leaf ageing, leaf area and crop load on photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and senescence of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot noir) leaves
Treatments varying the leaf area (source) to crop load (sink) balance of pot-grown Pinot noir vines caused differences in the photosynthesis (Pn) rates of the fourth leaf, 48 h after they were applied. Stomatal conductance was only affected by leaf removal, not by the presence or absence of crop. The vines with and without crop were subject to a range of leaf removal treatments. All treatments retained leaves at nodes 1-4 from the shoot base and then had 100%(control), 66 %, 33 %, or 0 % leaves retained from node 5 to the apex of the shoot. Leaf removal elevated the Pn rate of the fourth leaf, but there was no difference in Pn rate between vines with or without crop pre-veraison. From veraison on the photosynthetic rate of vines with crop and 100 % leaves retained increased. Similar, high Pn rate was also observed for vines without crop and 0 % leaves retained. The lower Pn rate of vines with crop pre-veraison suggests that there is potential to increase vine productivity in this period. The Pn rate of vines without crop, 100 % and 66 % leaves retained declined from 15 d after treatment. Average Pn of all treatments over the 4 measurements prior to harvest was positively correlated with the vine leaf area (source) to total vine dry weight (sink) ratio. Leaves of vines with a high source:sink ratio (without crop, 100, 66 or 33%leaves retained) senesced i.e. decreased in chlorophyll content more rapidly than leaves of the low source to sink ratio treatments. Results indicate that the decline in grapevine leaf Pn, previously associated with advanced leaf age is actually caused by a progressive increase in leaf area to fruit weight (source:sink) ratio, as leaves emerge on the developing vine
Spitzer Space Telescope Observations of Circumbinary Dust Disks around Polars
We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC photometry of the magnetic cataclysmic variables EF Eri, MR Ser, VV Pup, V834 Cen, GG Leo and V347 Pav. When we combine our results with the 2MASS data, we find that at least five of the polars have flux densities in the mid-IR in excess of the emission expected from the stellar components alone. We are unable to model this mid-IR excess with cyclotron emission, but we can recreate the observed spectral energy distributions with the inclusion of a simple circumbinary dust disk model. Importantly, we find that the masses of our modelled disks are approximately 12 orders of magnitude lower than required to significantly affect CV evolution. The accretion disk-less polars are ideal places to search for these disks, since the luminous accretion disk in most CVs would drown out the faint IR signature of the cooler, dimmer circumbinary disks
The Behavior of Granular Materials under Cyclic Shear
The design and development of a parallel plate shear cell for the study of
large scale shear flows in granular materials is presented. The parallel plate
geometry allows for shear studies without the effects of curvature found in the
more common Couette experiments. A system of independently movable slats
creates a well with side walls that deform in response to the motions of grains
within the pack. This allows for true parallel plate shear with minimal
interference from the containing geometry. The motions of the side walls also
allow for a direct measurement of the velocity profile across the granular
pack. Results are presented for applying this system to the study of transients
in granular shear and for shear-induced crystallization. Initial shear profiles
are found to vary from packing to packing, ranging from a linear profile across
the entire system to an exponential decay with a width of approximately 6 bead
diameters. As the system is sheared, the velocity profile becomes much sharper,
resembling an exponential decay with a width of roughly 3 bead diameters.
Further shearing produces velocity profiles which can no longer be fit to an
exponential decay, but are better represented as a Gaussian decay or error
function profile. Cyclic shear is found to produce large scale ordering of the
granular pack, which has a profound impact on the shear profile. There exist
periods of time in which there is slipping between layers as well as periods of
time in which the layered particles lock together resulting in very little
relative motion.Comment: 10 pages including 12 figure

Effects Of Length, Complexity, And Grammatical Correctness On Stuttering In Spanish-Speaking Preschool Children
Purpose: To explore the effects of utterance length, syntactic complexity, and grammatical correctness on stuttering in the spontaneous speech of young, monolingual Spanish-speaking children. Method: Spontaneous speech samples of 11 monolingual Spanish-speaking children who stuttered, ages 35 to 70 months, were examined. Mean number of syllables, total number of clauses, utterance complexity (i.e., containing no clauses, simple clauses, or subordinate and/or conjoined clauses), and grammatical correctness (i.e., the presence or absence of morphological and syntactical errors) in stuttered and fluent utterances were compared. Results: Findings revealed that stuttered utterances in Spanish tended to be longer and more often grammatically incorrect, and contain more clauses, including more subordinate and/or conjoined clauses. However, when controlling for the interrelatedness of syllable number and clause number and complexity, only utterance length and grammatical incorrectness were significant predictors of stuttering in the spontaneous speech of these Spanish-speaking children. Use of complex utterances did not appear to contribute to the prediction of stuttering when controlling for utterance length. Conclusions: Results from the present study were consistent with many earlier reports of English-speaking children. Both length and grammatical factors appear to affect stuttering in Spanish-speaking children. Grammatical errors, however, served as the greatest predictor of stuttering.Communication Sciences and Disorder
Measurement of the 18Ne(a,p_0)21Na reaction cross section in the burning energy region for X-ray bursts
The 18Ne(a,p)21Na reaction provides one of the main HCNO-breakout routes into
the rp-process in X-ray bursts. The 18Ne(a,p_0)21Na reaction cross section has
been determined for the first time in the Gamow energy region for peak
temperatures T=2GK by measuring its time-reversal reaction 21Na(p,a)18Ne in
inverse kinematics. The astrophysical rate for ground-state to ground-state
transitions was found to be a factor of 2 lower than Hauser-Feshbach
theoretical predictions. Our reduced rate will affect the physical conditions
under which breakout from the HCNO cycles occurs via the 18Ne(a,p)21Na
reaction.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review

Easily retrievable objects among the NEO population
Asteroids and comets are of strategic importance for science in an effort to understand the formation, evolution and composition of the Solar System. Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are of particular interest because of their accessibility from Earth, but also because of their speculated wealth of material resources. The exploitation of these resources has long been discussed as a means to lower the cost of future space endeavours. In this paper, we consider the currently known NEO population and define a family of so-called Easily Retrievable Objects (EROs), objects that can be transported from accessible heliocentric orbits into the Earth’s neighbourhood at affordable costs. The asteroid retrieval transfers are sought from the continuum of low energy transfers enabled by the dynamics of invariant manifolds; specifically, the retrieval transfers target planar, vertical Lyapunov and halo orbit families associated with the collinear equilibrium points of the Sun-Earth Circular Restricted Three Body problem. The judicious use of these dynamical features provides the best opportunity to find extremely low energy Earth transfers for asteroid material. A catalogue of asteroid retrieval candidates is then presented. Despite the highly incomplete census of very small asteroids, the ERO catalogue can already be populated with 12 different objects retrievable with less than 500 m/s of Δv. Moreover, the approach proposed represents a robust search and ranking methodology for future retrieval candidates that can be automatically applied to the growing survey of NEOs
Deformation and flow of a two-dimensional foam under continuous shear
We investigate the flow properties of a two-dimensional aqueous foam
submitted to a quasistatic shear in a Couette geometry. A strong localization
of the flow (shear banding) at the edge of the moving wall is evidenced,
characterized by an exponential decay of the average tangential velocity.
Moreover, the analysis of the rapid velocity fluctuations reveals self-similar
dynamical structures consisting of clusters of bubbles rolling as rigid bodies.
To relate the instantaneous (elastic) and time-averaged (plastic) components of
the strain, we develop a stochastic model where irreversible rearrangements are
activated by local stress fluctuations originating from the rubbing of the
wall. This model gives a complete description of our observations and is also
consistent with data obtained on granular shear bands by other groups.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Logarithmic rate dependence in deforming granular materials
Rate-independence for stresses within a granular material is a basic tenet of
many models for slow dense granular flows. By contrast, logarithmic rate
dependence of stresses is found in solid-on-solid friction, in geological
settings, and elsewhere. In this work, we show that logarithmic rate-dependence
occurs in granular materials for plastic (irreversible) deformations that occur
during shearing but not for elastic (reversible) deformations, such as those
that occur under moderate repetitive compression. Increasing the shearing rate,
\Omega, leads to an increase in the stress and the stress fluctuations that at
least qualitatively resemble what occurs due to an increase in the density.
Increases in \Omega also lead to qualitative changes in the distributions of
stress build-up and relaxation events. If shearing is stopped at t=0, stress
relaxations occur with \sigma(t)/ \sigma(t=0) \simeq A \log(t/t_0). This
collective relaxation of the stress network over logarithmically long times
provides a mechanism for rate-dependent strengthening.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. RevTeX
