Excitonic - vibronic coupled dimers: A dynamic approach
The dynamical properties of exciton transfer coupled to polarization
vibrations in a two site system are investigated in detail. A fixed point
analysis of the full system of Bloch - oscillator equations representing the
coupled excitonic - vibronic flow is performed. For overcritical polarization a
bifurcation converting the stable bonding ground state to a hyperbolic unstable
state which is basic to the dynamical properties of the model is obtained. The
phase space of the system is generally of a mixed type: Above bifurcation chaos
develops starting from the region of the hyperbolic state and spreading with
increasing energy over the Bloch sphere leaving only islands of regular
dynamics. The behaviour of the polarization oscillator accordingly changes from

Poor attention rather than hyperactivity/impulsivity predicts academic achievement in very preterm and full-term adolescents
Background: Very preterm (VP) children are at particular risk for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) of the inattentive subtype. It is unknown whether the neurodevelopmental pathways to academic underachievement are the same as in the general population. This study investigated whether middle childhood attention or hyperactivity/impulsivity problems are better predictors of VP adolescents' academic achievement.
Method: In a geographically defined prospective whole-population sample of VP (<32 weeks gestation) and/or very low birth weight (<1500 g birth weight) (VLBW/VP; n = 281) and full-term control children (n = 286) in South Germany, ADHD subtypes were assessed at 6 years 3 months and 8 years 5 months using multiple data sources. Academic achievement was assessed at 13 years of age.
Results: Compared with full-term controls, VLBW/VP children were at higher risk for ADHD inattentive subtype [6 years 3 months: odds ratio (OR) 2.8, p < 0.001; 8 years 5 months: OR 1.7, p = 0.020] but not for ADHD hyperactive-impulsive subtype (6 years 3 months: OR 1.4, p = 0.396; 8 years 5 months: OR 0.9, p = 0.820). Childhood attention measures predicted academic achievement in VLBW/VP and also full-term adolescents, whereas hyperactive/impulsive behaviour did not.
Conclusions: Attention is an important prerequisite for learning and predicts long-term academic underachievement. As ADHD inattentive subtype and cognitive impairments are frequent in VLBW/VP children, their study may help to identify the neurofunctional pathways from early brain development and dysfunction to attention problems and academic underachievement
PP-waves with torsion and metric-affine gravity
A classical pp-wave is a 4-dimensional Lorentzian spacetime which admits a
nonvanishing parallel spinor field; here the connection is assumed to be
Levi-Civita. We generalise this definition to metric compatible spacetimes with
torsion and describe basic properties of such spacetimes. We use our
generalised pp-waves for constructing new explicit vacuum solutions of

Transition from the Couette-Taylor system to the plane Couette system
We discuss the flow between concentric rotating cylinders in the limit of
large radii where the system approaches plane Couette flow. We discuss how in
this limit the linear instability that leads to the formation of Taylor
vortices is lost and how the character of the transition approaches that of
planar shear flows. In particular, a parameter regime is identified where
fractal distributions of life times and spatiotemporal intermittency occur.
Experiments in this regime should allow to study the characteristics of shear

Conductivity in quasi two-dimensional systems
The conductivity in quasi two-dimensional systems is calculated using the
quantum kinetic equation. Linearizing the Lenard-Balescu collision integral
with the extension to include external field dependences allows one to
calculate the conductivity with diagrams beyond the GW approximation including
maximally crossed lines. Consequently the weak localization correction as an
interference effect appears here from the field dependence of the collision
integral (the latter dependence sometimes called intra-collisional field
effect). It is shown that this weak localization correction has the same origin
as the Debye-Onsager relaxation effect in plasma physics. The approximation is
applied to a system of quasi two-dimensional electrons in hetero-junctions
which interact with charged and neutral impurities and the low temperature
correction to the conductivity is calculated analytically. It turns out that
the dynamical screening due to charged impurities leads to a linear temperature
dependence, while the scattering from neutral impurities leads to the usual
Fermi-liquid behavior. By considering an appropriate mass action law to
determine the ratio of charged to neutral impurities we can describe the
experimental metal-insulator transition at low temperatures as a Mott-Hubbard

Towards a realistic microscopic description of highway traffic
Simple cellular automata models are able to reproduce the basic properties of
highway traffic. The comparison with empirical data for microscopic quantities
requires a more detailed description of the elementary dynamics. Based on
existing cellular automata models we propose an improved discrete model
incorporating anticipation effects, reduced acceleration capabilities and an
enhanced interaction horizon for braking. The modified model is able to
reproduce the three phases (free-flow, synchronized, and stop-and-go) observed
in real traffic. Furthermore we find a good agreement with detailed empirical
single-vehicle data in all phases.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Fuzzy cellular model for on-line traffic simulation
This paper introduces a fuzzy cellular model of road traffic that was
intended for on-line applications in traffic control. The presented model uses
fuzzy sets theory to deal with uncertainty of both input data and simulation
results. Vehicles are modelled individually, thus various classes of them can
be taken into consideration. In the proposed approach, all parameters of
vehicles are described by means of fuzzy numbers. The model was implemented in
a simulation of vehicles queue discharge process. Changes of the queue length
were analysed in this experiment and compared to the results of NaSch cellular

We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry
in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized
electrons off Si and Zr at . The
studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on
C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin
