    The performance effects of creative imitation on original products: Evidence from lab and field experiments

    Research Summary: A market entrant often challenges the incumbent using creative imitation: The entrant creatively combines imitated aspects of the original with its own innovative characteristics to create a distinct offering. Using lab and field experiments to examine creative imitation in China, we find the effects of creative imitations on the originals depend on the creative imitation's quality. We explore the underlying mechanisms, and show that including a low-quality creative imitation in the retail choice set increases satisfaction with and choice of the original, while a moderate-quality creative imitation does the opposite. Moreover, creative imitation affects consumers' satisfaction with the original by influencing whether their experience with the original verifies their expectations. Our paper reveals creative imitation effects to help incumbent firms effectively address them. Managerial Summary: When the incumbent is challenged by an entrant using creative imitation, consumers may react differently to the incumbent, and understanding consumers' reactions allows the incumbent to make better strategic decisions about how to address the challenge. Using lab and field experiments, we investigate creative imitations with two quality levels common in our empirical context, low quality and moderate quality, and examine how and why they differentially affect the originals. We find the presence of a low-quality creative imitation actually increased choice of the original by enhancing consumers' satisfaction with it, while a moderate-quality creative imitation reduced choice of the original by undermining satisfaction with it. Our research suggests the incumbent should address moderate-quality creative imitations' challenges to customer satisfaction, while temporarily tolerating low-quality creative imitations

Also, the physical properties of the asphalt samples are obtained by further calculations. Therefore if the researchers can obtain the stability and flow values of a standard mixture with the help of mechanical testing, the rest of the calculations will just be mathematical manipulations. Determination of mechanical testing parameters such as strain accumulation, creep stiffness, stability, flow and Marshall Quotient of dense bituminous mixtures by utilising artificial neural networks is important in the sense that, cumbersome testing procedures can be avoided with the help of the closed form solutions provided in this study. Marshall specimens, prepared by utilising polypropylene fibers, were tested by universal testing machine carrying out static creep tests to investigate the rutting potential of these mixtures. On the very well trained data basis, artificial neural network analyses were carried out to propose five separate models for mechanical testing properties. The explicit formulation of these five main mechanical testing properties by closed form solutions are presented for further use for researches

    The sadness of lives and the comfort of things: Goods as evocative objects in bereavement

    This paper seeks to understand the texture and emotional tenor of the relations that bereaved people can have with a range of objects, including those that seem mundane or simply part of the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life. Taking Joan Didion's best-selling book, The Year of Magical Thinking, as its focus, the paper examines the varied and significant roles that certain objects played as she negotiated the vagaries of her first year as a widow. While previous literature has mined the memorialising function of goods for survivors, our analysis suggests that goods and consumption experiences can also play a powerful role as tools to think with for those struggling to create a meaningful narrative of death and loss. It concludes by considering the contribution of the analysis to the understanding of goods as ‘active life presences’ (Turkle, 2007), the relationship between consumption and bereavement, and ‘the sadness of lives and the comfort of things’ (Miller, 2008)

    Characterization of the effect of heat stress on maternal and embryonic tissues of maize (<i>Zea mays L.</i>) kernels using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

    Heat stress during the early formative stages of maize (Zea mays L.) kernel development is detrimental to subsequent growth and grain yield. During this period, even a brief exposure to temperature above the optimum (25°C) can result in significant yield losses. The mechanisms involved in this response are not well understood, but appear to be associated with a thermally induced shift in hormone balance (cytokinin/ABA), which results in a reduction in kernel sink capacity (i.e. number of endosperm cells and starch granules formed) and the disruption of sugar metabolism and starch biosynthesis. However, the effect of heat stress on the morphology and ultra-structure of kernel component tissues (pedicel, pericarp, endosperm, and embryo) has not been studied. Therefore, the objective of our current study was to characterize heat stress induced changes in the pericarp (maternal) and the embryo (embryonic) tissues using SEM.</jats:p
