    Concurrent breast stroma sarcoma and breast carcinoma: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Breast cancer is one of the most important health problems in the world and affects a great number of women over the entire globe. This group of tumors rarely presents as bilateral disease and, when it does happen, normally occurs within the same histological type. We report a rare case of concurrent bilateral breast cancer with two different histology types, a breast carcinoma and a breast sarcoma, in a 42-year-old woman referred to our hospital.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 42-year-old Caucasian woman admitted to our institute in August 1999, presented with a nodule in the left breast of 3.0 × 2.5 cm, and, in the right breast, one of 1.0 cm, suspected of malignancy and with a clinically negative armpit. Biopsies had revealed invasive mammary carcinoma (right breast) and sarcoma (left breast). She was submitted to bilateral modified radical mastectomy. A histological study showed an invasive mammary carcinoma degree II lobular pleomorphic type with invasion of seven of the 19 excised axillary nodes in the right breast and, in the left breast, a sarcoma of the mammary stroma, for which the immunohistochemistry study was negative for epithelial biomarkers and positive for vimentin. Later, she was submitted for chemotherapy (six cycles of 75 mg/m<sup>2 </sup>5-fluorouracil, epirubicin and cyclophosphamide) followed by radiotherapy of the thoracic wall and axillary nodes on the left. Hormone receptors were positive in the tumor of the right breast, and tamoxifen, 20 mg, was prescribed on a daily basis (five years) followed by letrozole, 2.5 mg, also daily (five years). She presented no sign of negative evolution in the last consultation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The risk of development of bilateral breast cancer is about 1% each year within a similar histological type, but it is higher in tumors with lobular histology. In this case, the patient presented, simultaneously, two histologically distinct tumors, thus evidencing a rare situation.</p

    Identification of 14-3-3γ as a Mieap-interacting protein and its role in mitochondrial quality control

    Mieap, a p53-inducible protein, controls mitochondrial integrity by inducing the accumulation of lysosomal proteins within mitochondria. This phenomenon is designated MALM, for Mieap-induced accumulation of lysosome-like organelles within mitochondria. To identify this novel Mieap-interacting protein(s), we performed a two-dimensional image-converted analysis of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (2DICAL) on the proteins immunoprecipitated by an anti-Mieap antibody. We indentified 14-3-3γ as one of the proteins that was included in the Mieap-binding protein complex when MALM was induced. The interaction between Mieap and 14-3-3γ was confirmed on the exogenous and endogenous proteins. Interestingly, 14-3-3γ was localized within mitochondria when MALM occurred. A 14-3-3γ deficiency did not affect the accumulation of Mieap and lysosomal proteins within mitochondria, but dramatically inhibited the elimination of oxidized mitochondrial proteins. These results suggest that 14-3-3γ plays a critical role in eliminating oxidized mitochondrial proteins during the MALM process by interacting with Mieap within mitochondria

    Gay Rights, the Devil and the End Times: Public Religion and the Enchantment of the Homosexuality Debate in Zambia

    This article contributes to the understanding of the role of religion in the public and political controversies about homosexuality in Africa. As a case study it investigates the heated public debate in Zambia following a February 2012 visit by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who emphasised the need for the country to recognise the human rights of homosexuals. The focus is on a particular Christian discourse in this debate, in which the international pressure to recognise gay rights is considered a sign of the end times, and Ban Ki-moon, the UN and other international organisations are associated with the Antichrist and the Devil. Here, the debate about homosexuality becomes eschatologically enchanted through millennialist thought. Building on discussions about public religion and religion and politics in Africa, this article avoids popular explanations in terms of fundamentalist religion and African homophobia, but rather highlights the political significance of this discourse in a postcolonial African context

    AUTOMATION OF CALCULATIONS OF TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MANOMETRIC TUBULAR SPRINGS

    Tubular springs have received the name "Manometric" thanks to their initial use in manometric devices. For the wide use of tubular springs in various spheres of human activity, relevant methods of calculating their static and dynamic characteristics are needed. Many works have discussed the study of manometric tubular springs. The main method for calculating static characteristics of springs is the semi-membrane theory of shells, and to calculate the frequencies of natural oscillations, the spring was considered as a rod with a deformable cross-section. The article considers algorithms for calculation of static characteristics and frequencies of natural oscillations of manometric tubular springs with known geometric parameters of a spring and physical properties of a material. For calculations, in general, numerical methods were used, so for their implementation, it was required to develop programs for automatic design, in which the algorithms are implemented. The article describes the software systems for calculating the characteristics of springs: "Module" and "PCRMTP", which allow investigating the stress-strain state of the cross-section of tubular springs, determine their static characteristics with known geometric parameters, spring material, internal pressure and operating conditions. In addition, in the complex "PCRMTP" the possibility of calculating the frequencies of natural oscillations of tubular springs is realized. The automation of the design of tubular springs significantly reduces the labour input of selecting springs with the necessary characteristics and thereby eliminates the deterrent factor of introducing new designs
