The Ambush at Saint Marys River

    Get PDF
At a critical time in the American Civil War, President Lincoln was up for re-election, concerned that he might lose re-election, President Lincoln desired the Union to secure Florida. As Col. Guy Henry led an advancement from Jacksonville, Florida, across the northwest, there came word that the Confederate Army had a significant number of soldiers stationed at Lake City. Col. Henry and his men began to make their way towards Lake City, but on February 10, 1964, they were caught in an ambush as they attempted to cross the St. Marys River. This paper seeks to provide an examination of the events leading up to the ambush of Union soldiers at St. Marys River, as well as the overly aggressive tactics employed by military leadership in the raids throughout the northeast and north-central Florida, leads to the conclusion that the opportunity to cut off the Confederate supply lines failed due to poor leadership, overly aggressive tactics, and a poorly developed plan of attack

“Started By A Mouse” An examination into the character of Walt Disney, and the Company that he built.

Walt Disney\u27s legacy reaches all over the world, which is a far stretch from his humble beginning delivering newspapers in Kansas City. This study will examine Walt Disney\u27s life, starting with his humble beginnings on the farm, his early days as a cartoonist, to the rise of the Walt Disney Corporation. The examination will look at the man, Walt Disney, focusing on his upbringing and the various challenges that he faced throughout his life that shaped the leader that he would later become, and will reveal how, despite the adversities, obstacles, and challenges that Walt faced, and how they shaped Walt into a successful American entrepreneur, cartoonist, animator, director, and pioneer in animation. Walt can attribute his success to his incredible work ethic and five simple rules every entrepreneur should follow. For Walt, those four simple words, Dream-Believe-Dare-Do, have become the pillars for the Disney corporation and should be foundational for every entrepreneur as they begin to work towards their dreams and goals for their business, and perhaps one day they will be as successful as Walt Disney, remember it was all started by a mouse

The Cyclic Connectivity of Homogeneous Arcwise Connected Continua

    Get PDF
A continuum is cyclicly connected provided each pair of its points lie together on some simple closed curve. In 1927, G. T. Whyburn proved that a locally connected plane continuum is cyclicly connected if and only if it contains no separating points. This theorem was fundamental in his original treatment of cyclic element theory. Since then numerous authors have obtained extensions of Whyburn\u27s theorem. In this paper we characterize cyclic connectedness in the class of all Hausdorff continua

Guidelines for depth data collection in rivers when applying interpolation techniques (kriging) for river restoration

    Get PDF
International audienceRiver restoration appraisal requires the implementation of monitoring programmes that assess the river site before and after the restoration project. However, little work has yet been developed to design effective and efficient sampling strategies. Three main variables need to be considered when designing monitoring programmes: space, time and scale. The aim of this paper is to describe the methodology applied to analyse the variation of depth in space, scale and time so more comprehensive monitoring programmes can be developed. Geostatistical techniques were applied to study the spatial dimension (sampling strategy and density), spectral analysis was used to study the scale at which depth shows cyclic patterns, whilst descriptive statistics were used to assess the temporal variation. A brief set of guidelines have been summarised in the conclusion

Visualizations for an Explainable Planning Agent

In this paper, we report on the visualization capabilities of an Explainable AI Planning (XAIP) agent that can support human in the loop decision making. Imposing transparency and explainability requirements on such agents is especially important in order to establish trust and common ground with the end-to-end automated planning system. Visualizing the agent's internal decision-making processes is a crucial step towards achieving this. This may include externalizing the "brain" of the agent -- starting from its sensory inputs, to progressively higher order decisions made by it in order to drive its planning components. We also show how the planner can bootstrap on the latest techniques in explainable planning to cast plan visualization as a plan explanation problem, and thus provide concise model-based visualization of its plans. We demonstrate these functionalities in the context of the automated planning components of a smart assistant in an instrumented meeting space.Comment: PREVIOUSLY Mr. Jones -- Towards a Proactive Smart Room Orchestrator (appeared in AAAI 2017 Fall Symposium on Human-Agent Groups

El teorema demostrado es que todo continuo métrico es imagen continua de algún continuo métrico hereditariamente indescomponible. The theorem proven here is that every compact metric continuum is a continuous image of some hereditarily indecomposable metric continuum

Ribbed tiled vaulting: Innovation through two design-build workshops

Traditional tile vaults are typically constructed springing off from walls or straight arches built from support element to support element on falsework. From these, the vault's surface can be built in space with minimal or no guidework. Built on previous research and focusing on continuous surface expression and fully representing three-dimensional equilibrium surfaces in compression, this research explores the design potential of three-dimensional networks of structural ribs, made possible by new funicular form-finding approaches. This new structural typology for tile vaults was investigated and tested through two intensive, design-build workshops in Australia, the first at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in October 2012, and the second at Monash Art Design & Architecture (MADA), in May 2013
