Reducing Electricity Demand Charge for Data Centers with Partial Execution
Data centers consume a large amount of energy and incur substantial
electricity cost. In this paper, we study the familiar problem of reducing data
center energy cost with two new perspectives. First, we find, through an
empirical study of contracts from electric utilities powering Google data
centers, that demand charge per kW for the maximum power used is a major
component of the total cost. Second, many services such as Web search tolerate
partial execution of the requests because the response quality is a concave
function of processing time. Data from Microsoft Bing search engine confirms
this observation.
We propose a simple idea of using partial execution to reduce the peak power
demand and energy cost of data centers. We systematically study the problem of
scheduling partial execution with stringent SLAs on response quality. For a
single data center, we derive an optimal algorithm to solve the workload
scheduling problem. In the case of multiple geo-distributed data centers, the
demand of each data center is controlled by the request routing algorithm,
which makes the problem much more involved. We decouple the two aspects, and
develop a distributed optimization algorithm to solve the large-scale request
routing problem. Trace-driven simulations show that partial execution reduces
cost by for one data center, and by for geo-distributed
data centers together with request routing.Comment: 12 page
Molecular gas temperature and density in spiral galaxies
We combine beam-matched CO-13, CO-12 J = 3 yields 2 and J = 2 yields 1 line data to infer the molecular gas excitation conditions in the central 500 to 1600 pc diameters of a small sample of infrared-bright external galaxies: NGC253, IC342, M 83, Maffei 2, and NGC6946. Additional observations of the J = 1 yields 0 lines of C-18O and CO-13 set limits on the opacity of the CO-13 J = 1 yields 0 line averaged over the central kiloparsec of these spiral galaxies
A SIMPLE RP-HPLC METHOD FOR SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF ORGANIC IMPURITIES, ENANTIOMER AND ASSAY OF DEXLANSOPRAZOLE
Objective: To develop a simple and accurate RP-HPLC method for simultaneous estimation of organic impurities, enantiomer and assay of Dexlansoprazole, proposed method was validated according to an International Conference on Harmonisation of technical requirements for registration of pharmaceuticals for human use (ICH) guidelines.Methods: Cellulose tris-(3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate) bonded on silica gel (Chiralpak IC) were used as stationary phase. Acetonitrile (ACN) and 10 mM dibasic potassium phosphate buffer of pH 7.20, adjusted with dilute ortho phosphoric acid, were used as mobile phase in gradient composition at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. UV detection was made at 283 nm and run time was 27 min.Results: Limit of detection (LOD) and Limit of quantification (LOQ) was 42 and 126 ng/ml, respectively. Analytes response was studied from 0.25-1.50 µg/ml and r2 value of the calibration curve was>0.999. Accuracy was studied in three different concentrations, the mean recovery was observed between 93.8 and 102.5%. To the maximum of 0.01% impurity variation was observed between the results of inter and intra-day precision.Conclusion: Proposed method is specific, precise, sensitive, linear and accurate. As a significance of this proposed method, the listed known impurities of Lansoprazole monograph [United States, British and European pharmacopoeias (USP/BP/Ph. Eur.)] Were used in method development and separation was demonstrated. Apart from this, enantiomer resolution was achieved and the same chromatogram was used for assay calculation.Â
Intrinsically Bent DNA in the Promoter Regions of the Yeast GAL1–10 and GAL80 Genes
Circular permutation analysis has detected fairly strong sites of intrinsic DNA bending on the promoter regions of the yeast GAL1–10 and GAL80 genes. These bends lie in functionally suggestive locations. On the promoter of the GAL1–10 structural genes, strong bends bracket nucleosome B, which lies between the UASG and the GAL1 TATA. These intrinsic bends could help position nucleosome B. Nucleosome B plus two other promoter nucleosomes protect the TATA and start site elements in the inactive state of expression but are completely disrupted (removed) when GAL1–10 expression is induced. The strongest intrinsic bend (;70°) lies at the downstream edge of nucleosome B; this places it approximately 30 base pairs upstream of the GAL1 TATA, a position that could allow it to be involved in GAL1 activation in several ways, including the recruitment of a yeast HMG protein that is required for the normally robust level of GAL1 expression in the induced state (Paull, T., Carey, M., and Johnson, R. (1996) Genes Dev. 10, 2769–2781). On the regulatory gene GAL80, the single bend lies in the non-nucleosomal hypersensitive region, between a GAL80-specific far upstream promoter element and the more gene-proximal promoter elements. VLA Limits for Intermediate Mass Black Holes in Three Globular Clusters
The observational evidence for central black holes in globular clusters has
been argued extensively, and their existence has important consequences for
both the formation and evolution of the cluster. Most of the evidence comes
from dynamical arguments, but the interpretation is difficult, given the short
relaxation times and old ages of the clusters. One of the most robust
signatures for the existence of a black hole is radio and/or X-ray emission. We
observed three globular clusters, NGC6093 (M80), NGC6266 (M62), and NGC7078
(M15), with the VLA in the A and C configuration with a 3-sigma noise of 36, 36
and 25 microJy, respectively. We find no statistically-significant evidence for
radio emission from the central region for any of the three clusters. NGC6266
shows a 2-sigma detection. It is difficult to infer a mass from these upper
limits due to uncertainty about the central gas density, accretion rate, and

Distinguishing importation from diversification of quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae by molecular evolutionary analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Distinguishing the recent introduction of quinolone resistant gonococci into a population from diversification of resistant strains already in the population is important for planning effective infection control strategies. We applied molecular evolutionary analyses to DNA sequences from 9 housekeeping genes and <it>gyrA</it>, <it>parC </it>and <it>porB </it>of 24 quinolone resistant <it>N. gonorrhoeae </it>(QRNG) and 24 quinolone sensitive isolates collected in Israel during 2000–2001.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phylogenetic and eBURST analyses and estimates of divergence time indicated QRNG were introduced on 3 separate occasions and underwent limited diversification by mutation, deletion and horizontal gene transfer. Reconstruction of <it>N. gonorrhoeae </it>demography showed a slowly declining effective strain population size from 1976 to 1993, rapid decline between 1994 and 1999, and an increase from 1999 to 2001. This is partially attributable to declining gonorrhea case rates from 1973 to 1994. Additional contributing factors are selective sweeps of antibiotic resistant gonococci and increased transmission from sex workers. The abrupt decline in the mid-1990s heralded an increased incidence of gonorrhea from 1997 to the present. The subsequent increase in effective strain population size since 1999 reflects the increased gonococcal census population and introduction of quinolone resistance strains.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study demonstrates the effective use of population genetic approaches to assess recent and historical population dynamics of <it>N. gonorrhoeae</it>.</p

HNC, HCN and CN in Seyfert galaxies
Bright HNC 1--0 emission has been found towards several Seyfert galaxies.
This is unexpected since traditionally HNC is a tracer of cold (10 K) gas, and
the molecular gas of luminous galaxies like Seyferts is thought to have bulk
kinetic temperatures surpassing 50 K. In this work we aim to distinguish the
cause of the bright HNC and to model the physical conditions of the HNC and HCN
emitting gas. We have used SEST, JCMT and IRAM 30m telescopes to observe HNC
3-2 and HCN 3-2 line emission in a selection of 5 HNC-luminous Seyfert
galaxies. We estimate and discuss the excitation conditions of HCN and HNC in
NGC 1068, NGC 3079, NGC 2623 and NGC 7469, based on the observed 3-2/1-0 line
intensity ratios. We also observed CN 1-0 and 2-1 emission and discuss its role
in photon and X-ray dominated regions. HNC 3-2 was detected in 3 galaxies (NGC
3079, NGC 1068 and NGC 2623). HCN 3-2 was detected in NGC 3079, NGC 1068 and
NGC 1365. The HCN 3-2/1-0 ratio is lower than 0.3 only in NGC 3079, whereas the
HNC 3-2/1-0 ratio is larger than 0.3 only in NGC 2623. The HCN/HNC 1-0 and 3-2
line ratios are larger than unity in all the galaxies. The HCN/HNC 3-2 line
ratio is lower than unity only in NGC 2623, similar to Arp 220, Mrk 231 and NGC
4418. In three of the galaxies the HNC emissions emerge from gas of densities
n<10^5 cm^3, where the chemistry is dominated by ion-neutral reactions. In NGC
1068 the emission of HNC emerges from lower (<10^5 cm^3) density gas than HCN
(>10^5 cm^3). Instead, the emissions of HNC and HCN emerge from the same gas in
NGC 3079. The observed HCN/HNC and CN/HCN line ratios favor a PDR scenario,
rather than an XDR one. However, the N(HNC)/N(HCN) column density ratios
obtained for NGC 3079 can be found only in XDR environments.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. A selection of this paper will be
