    CONSUMER PREFERENCES AND PURCHASE INTENTIONS FOR RATTAN FURNITURE

    Although research on consumer preference and purchase intentions has received significant attention, little research has been performed with respect to furniture products, particularly in the area of empirical hypothesis testing. This study used regression models to test hypotheses relating to positional goods consumption and environmental and sustainable consumption theories to investigate consumers’ preference for rattan cane furniture and their intentions to purchase the product. A questionnaire was administered to 750 staff and students from universities, polytechnics, and research institutions in Ghana. The results showed that social status, modernity, and environmental safety supported the preference and purchase intentions for rattan cane furniture, whereas mixed results emerged from sustainable consumption. The most important driver of preference for rattan cane furniture was modernity, followed byenvironmental safety, social status, and sustainable consumption. In the case of purchase intentions, social status emerged as the most important factor, followed by modernity, and then environmental consumption. Building a positive social, environmental, and sustainable image of rattan cane furniture will enhance the product’s value, and this will culminate in increasing consumers’ preference for the product and their intentions to purchase the product. The study concluded that through market segmentation, manufacturers, and marketers of rattan cane furniture can target consumers who are proenvironmentalists and those who want to use the product to enhance their social image, thereby attracting a price premium

    Effect of Formaldehyde Treatment on Bacteria-Infected Hatching Eggs of Gallus gallus domesticus Linnaeus, 1758

    The effectiveness of formaldehyde egg disinfection is well documented in literature despite its reported toxicity. This study focused on the need for an optimum formaldehyde concentration (FC) that significantly reduces microbial load with minimal damaging effect on egg viability and hatchability. Using a true experimental design, bacterial load on formaldehyde-treated (FT) and control groups of eggs and hatchability were compared. Gram-staining and biochemical tests identified five bacterial species: Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sp., Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus sp. with the two coliform bacteria, E. coli and Enterobacter sp., dominating. Comparison of median differences of bacterial load on eggs before and after formaldehyde treatment by Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed marginal significance in bacterial load reduction (Z = -2.016, P = 0.044). This difference was observed for bacterial load between the control group (CG) and the FT group with FC 30/20 ml/g (U = 3.0, P = 0.047). The hatchability of the CG differed significantly from four FT groups of eggs with FC 30/20 ml/g showing the highest level of significance [χ² (1) = 14.71; P = 0.0001]. A FC of 30/20 ml/g produced the best domestic fowl egg disinfection compared to other FCs and hatchability decreased with increasing formalin volume

    Insect defoliation modulates influence of climate on the growth of tree species in the boreal mixed forests of eastern Canada

    Increasing air temperatures and changing precipitation patterns due to climate change can affect tree growth in boreal forests. Periodic insect outbreaks affect the growth trajectory of trees, making it difficult to quantify the climate signal in growth dynamics at scales longer than a year. We studied climate-driven growth trends and the influence of spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) outbreaks on these trends by analyzing the basal area increment (BAI) of 2058 trees of Abies balsamea (L.) Mill., Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Thuja occidentalis L., Populus tremuloides Michx., and Betula papyrifera Marsh, which co-occurs in the boreal mixedwood forests of western Quebec. We used a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) to analyze species-specific trends in BAI dynamics from 1967 to 1991. The model relied on tree size, cambial age, degree of spruce budworm defoliation, and seasonal climatic variables. Overall, we observed a decreasing growth rate of the spruce budworm host species, A. balsamea and P. glauca between 1967 and 1991, and an increasing growth rate for the non-host, P. tremuloides, B. papyrifera, and T. occidentalis. Our results suggest that insect outbreaks may offset growth increases resulting from a warmer climate. The observation warrants the inclusion of the spruce budworm defoliation into models predicting future forest productivity

    Connecting DNA Origami Structures Using the Biotin-Streptavidin Specific Binding

    This work made use of the strong interaction between biotin and streptavidin to connect designed DNA origami structures. The caDNAno software was used to design a 6 layer 3D origami cross-like structure. Selected DNA strands at the engineered attachment sites on the DNA origami structure were biotinylated. After folding of the origami structures, the biotinylated strands stick out of the attachment sites. Purified samples of origami structures were then mixed with streptavidin and the mixture purified. After characterization, we see that attachment only occurs at the biotinylated sites.     Post Occupancy Evaluation of postgraduate students’ hostel facilities and services

    Construction Post Occupancy Evaluation studies, especially those related to students’ hostels has received worldwide attention. However, this has not been the case in Ghana. This study sought to evaluate the performance of two postgraduate hostel buildings (Steven Paris Hostel and Transport Hostel) on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus with regards to services rendered by management, functionality and environmental friendliness. The objective was to investigate the level of students’ satisfaction with some selected facilities and services available at the hostels. A survey of 70 postgraduate students who were residents of the two hostels were conducted to achieve the objective of the study. Data obtained from the survey was analyzed by Relative Satisfaction Index (RSI) and mean aggregate RSIs. The findings from the study revealed that occupants are generally “Satisfied” (Mean Aggregate RSI of 68.05) with the facilities and services available at the postgraduate hostels. The occupants showed high satisfaction level with the bedroom, television room, bathroom, kitchen, meeting room, support services and lobbies. However, they were indecisive about their satisfaction with management of the hostels and the laundry room. The feedbacks obtained from the occupants should inform any decisions regarding future renovations and effective management of the hostels. The study recommends effective POEs and maintenance management practices for the institution’s hostel facilities to improve the comfort of users

    Built and forgotten: unveiling the defects associated with the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) jubilee house in Kumasi

    Lack of attention given to government buildings in Ghana has resulted in the deplorable states of such buildings. This study sought to identify and examine key defects associated with the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) Regional Office building in Kumasi. A mixed research strategy which involved the use of on-site building observations and case studies was adopted. A checklist was prepared to assist in the identification of the defects, and the on-site building inspection assisted in examining the key defects identified. The findings from the study revealed that peeling of paints, leakages in ceilings, staining/discolouration of walls, dampness in walls and floors, electrical defects and cracked walls were among the key defects associated with the building. The on-site inspection carried out confirmed the severity of these defects, and revealed that the building was in a deplorable state. Though this study may not indicate the entire scenario of the deplorable states of many government buildings, it tries to explore some common defects affecting one of such buildings and the need to pay attention to them. The findings from this study provides the platform for all stakeholders involved to come together and fight the deteriorating states of government buildings in the country

    Incidence of Blood and Meat Spots in Eggs from a Commercial Poultry Farm

    A study was conducted in two phases simultaneously in a commercial poultry farm to ascertain whether egg weight, temperature variation in pens, and proximity of birds to a noise source had an influence on the incidence of blood and meat spots in chicken eggs. Phase one involved the random sampling of 60 eggs per week for 15 weeks, making a total of 900 eggs from the pens of a 50-week-old layer strain. Phase two determined the effect of noise from a 3.3 kW electrical gasoline generator on the incidence of blood and meat spots. It lasted for 14 weeks and involved the random sampling of 10 eggs per week directly from two pens (i.e., A & D). Pen A and D were 4.7 m and 68 m away from the noise source respectively. A Chi-square test was conducted to establish the relationship between the parameters, whilst a Cramer’s V test was used to determine the extent of association where differences were deemed significant (p<0.05). Out of the 1040 eggs collected, 63% of the eggs had spots (32% blood spots and 31% meat spots). No association was observed between the occurrence of spots and egg weight, temperature variation, and proximity of birds to a generator

    Protein and energy requirements for indigenous guinea keets (Numida meleagris) in southern Ghana

    One thousand two hundred healthy unsexed unsexed keets were used in an 8-week feeding trial that aimed at determining the protein and energy requirements during the starter phase of local guinea fowls reared in coastal savanna part of Ghana. The keets were randomly allocated in a 3 X 2 factorial design to six dietary treatments (three crude protein levels and two energy levels) in a deep litter system. Each treatment had 200 keets and was replicated four times with 50 keets per replicate. The six dietary treatments were designated as follows: T1 (23% CP and 11.5 MJ ME/kg), T2 (24% CP and 11.5 MJ ME/kg), T3 (25% CP and 11.5 MJ ME/kg), T4 (23% CP and 12.5 MJ ME/kg), T5 (24% CP and 12.5 MJ ME/kg), and T6 (25% CP and 12.5 MJ ME/kg). A known daily quantity of feed was given each replicate early in the morning while water was provided ad libitum. The same diets were fed for the entire duration of the study. Feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, economy of gain and mortality were determined and use as indices of evaluation. The feed intake per keet per day increased with the lower energy level diets (T1, T2 and T3) (P < 0.05). Dietary treatments T5 and T6 had the highest (P < 0.05) daily weight gains of 8.61 and 8.38 g/day respectively. The feed conversion ratios of the keets were 4.18, 4.20, 4.13, 4.32, 3.46 and 3.60 for T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, respectively. T5 diet had the least (P < 0.05) feed costs per kg gain ($/kg gain) value of 1.63. The study indicated that protein and energy required by guinea keets during the first 8 weeks of growth could be put at 24 percent CP and 12.5 MJ ME/kg, respectively
