Spectral libraries and their uncertainties
Libraries of stellar spectra are fundamental tools in the study of stellar
populations and in automatic determination of atmospheric parameters for large
samples of observed stars. In the context of the present volume, here I give an
overview of the current status of stellar spectral libraries from the
perspective of stellar population modeling: what we have currently available,
how good they are, and where we need further improvement
Negative symptoms as key features of depression among cannabis users: a preliminary report.
OBJECTIVE:
Cannabis use is frequent among depressed patients and may lead to the so-called "amotivational syndrome", which combines symptoms of affective flattening and loss of emotional reactivity (i.e. the so-called "negative" symptomatology). The aim of this study was to investigate the negative symptomatology in depressed patients with concomitant cannabis use disorders (CUDs) in comparison with depressed patients without CUDs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Fifty-one patients with a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and concomitant CUD and fifty-one MDD patients were enrolled in the study. The 21-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and the negative symptoms subscales of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess depressive and negative symptomatology.
RESULTS:
Patients with cannabis use disorders presented significantly more severe negative symptoms in comparison with patients without cannabis use (15.18 ± 2.25 vs 13.75 ± 2.44; t100 = 3.25 p = 0.002).
DISCUSSION:
A deeper knowledge of the "negative" psychopathological profile of MDD patients who use cannabis may lead to novel etiopathogenetic models of MDD and to more appropriate treatment approaches
The End of Amnesia: Measuring the Metallicities of Type Ia SN Progenitors with Manganese Lines in Supernova Remnants
The Mn to Cr mass ratio in supernova ejecta has recently been proposed as a
tracer of Type Ia SN progenitor metallicity. We review the advantages and
problems of this observable quantity, and discuss them in the framework of the
Tycho Supernova Remnant. The fluxes of the Mn and Cr Kalpha lines in the X-ray
spectra of Tycho observed by the Suzaku satellite suggests a progenitor of
supersolar metallicity.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of 'Probing Stellar Populations out to

The waiting period of initial public offerings
The length of time it takes an IPO firm to go public (called ‘waiting period’) reflects multiple layers of scrutiny from underwriters, auditors, venture capitalists, institutional investors, and regulators. Accordingly, we show that the waiting period is a good barometer of ex ante uncertainty about future cash flows and that it has predictive power after the firm goes public. We find that firms marked by short waiting periods experience lower underpricing and less uncertainty and superior stock/operating performance in the aftermarket. We also report that smaller firms are taking longer to go public after SOX Act, thus providing justification for the 2012 JOBS Act
Retooling computational techniques for EEG-based neurocognitive modeling of children's data, validity and prospects for learning and education
This paper describes continuing research on the building of neurocognitive models of the internal mental and brain processes of children using a novel adapted combination of existing computational approaches and tools, and using electro-encephalographic (EEG) data to validate the models. The guiding working model which was pragmatically selected for investigation was the established and widely used Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) modeling architecture from cognitive science. The anatomo-functional circuitry covered by ACT-R is validated by MRI-based neuroscience research. The present experimental data was obtained from a cognitive neuropsychology study involving preschool children (aged 46), which measured their visual selective attention and word comprehension behaviors. The collection and analysis of Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) from the EEG data allowed for the identification of sources of electrical activity known as dipoles within the cortex, using a combination of computational tools (Independent Component Analysis, FASTICA; EEG-Lab DIPFIT). The results were then used to build neurocognitive models based on Python ACT-R such that the patterns and the timings of the measured EEG could be reproduced as simplified symbolic representations of spikes, built through simplified electric-field simulations. The models simulated ultimately accounted for more than three-quarters of variations spatially and temporally in all electrical potential measurements (fit of model to dipole data expressed as R

ranged between 0.75 and 0.98; P < 0.0001). Implications for practical uses of the present work are discussed for learning and educational applications in non-clinical and special needs children's populations, and for the possible use of non-experts (teachers and parents)
Detection of bovine alpha-S1-casein in term and preterm human colostrum with proteomic techniques
Due to increased social awareness of allergens and population hyper-sensitization, the reported incidence of allergic reactions to food allergens has increased over the past two decades. Cow's milk proteins (CMPs) are among the most common food allergens. The aim of this study was to use proteomics techniques to investigate cow's milk allergens in both full-term human colostrum and in preterm newborns' mothers - where both groups showed no prior allergen detection – in order to understand whether cow's milk allergens could be a cause of sensitization established through lactation. The most relevant finding was the detection of the intact bovine alpha-S1-casein in both term and preterm colostrum. Using techniques detailed in this paper and which allowed for direct protein identification, β-lactoglobulin was not detected in any of the colostrum samples. According to our results, bovine alpha 1 casein is considered a major cow's milk allergen, is readily secreted in human milk, and so could be considered a possible cause of sensitization in exclusively breastfed infants
The CHilean Automatic Supernova sEarch (CHASE)
The CHASE project started in 2007 with the aim of providing young southern
supernovae (SNe) to the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) and Millennium Center
for Supernova Studies (MCSS) follow-up programs. So far CHASE has discovered 33
SNe with an average of more than 2.5 SNe per month in 2008. In addition to the
search we are carrying out a follow-up program targeting bright SNe. Our fully
automated data reduction allows us to follow the evolution on the light curve
in real time, triggering further observations if something potentially
interesting is detectedComment: 4 pages, 2 figures, conference proceedin
