    Workers’ Remittances and Economic Growth in the Philippines

    This paper considers the present issues surrounding the role of workers remittances and its contribution/effect on economic growth and development. In particular, this paper focuses on how such remittances have been able to spur development and growth. As a case study, the paper focuses on the Philippines, one of the countries in the world with a long history of sending workers abroad. In 2005, the Philippines received approximately US$11Bn of remittances, almost 10% of its GDP. It ranks as the 3rd largest recipient of remittances in the world after India and Mexico. Along this line, the paper looks into the following areas: (a) remittance and overall growth, (b) linkages between remittances and microfinance, (c) tracing the contribution of remittances to countryside development, and (d) relationship between worker remittances and structural reform policies. We are also concerned at how these remittances have impacted the poor in general. This is important as the expected benefits have generally been unfelt at the level of the poor. We hypothesize that workers’ remittance have not been properly utilized into productive and investment uses in the Philippines. There are strong anecdotal evidences that show that most of these resources are being used to fund conspicuous consumption.     Sophisticated multicomputer applications require efficient, flexible, convenient underlying communication primitives. In the work described here, Zipcode, a new, portable communication library, has been designed, developed, articulated and evaluated. The primary goals were: high efficiency compared to lowest-level primitives, user-definable message receipt selectivity, as well as abstraction of collections of processes and message selectivity to allow multiple, independently conceived libraries to work together without conflict. Zipcode works atop the Caltech Reactive Kernel, a portable, minimalistic multicomputer node operating system. Presently, the Reactive Kernel is implemented for Intel iPSC/1, iPSC/2, and Symult s2010 multicomputers and emulated on shared-memory computers as well as networks of Sun workstations. Consequently, Zipcode addresses an equally wide audience, and can plausibly be run in other environments

    Simultaneous laser vibrometry on multiple surfaces with a single beam system using range-resolved interferometry

    A novel range-resolved interferometric signal processing technique that uses sinusoidal optical frequency modulation is applied to multi-surface vibrometry, demonstrating simultaneous optical measurements of vibrations on two surfaces using a single, collimated laser beam, with a minimum permissible distance of 3.5 cm between surfaces. The current system, using a cost-effective laser diode and a fibre-coupled, downlead insensitive setup, allows an interferometric fringe rate of up to 180 kHz to be resolved with typical displacement noise levels of 8 pm Hz-0.5. In this paper, the system is applied to vibrometry measurements of a table-top cryostat, with concurrent measurements of the optical widow and the sample holder inside. This allows the separation of common-mode vibrations of the whole cryostat from differential vibrations between the window and the sample holder.EPSR

    LU Factorization of Sparse, Unsymmetric Jacobian Matrices on Multicomputers: Experience, Strategies, Performance

    Efficient sparse linear algebra cannot be achieved as a straightforward extension of the dense case, even for concurrent implementations. This paper details a new, general-purpose unsymmetric sparse LU factorization code built on the philosophy of Harwell’s MA28, with variations. We apply this code in the framework of Jacobian-matrix factorizations, arising from Newton iterations in the solution of nonlinear systems of equations. Serious attention has been paid to the data-structure requirements, complexity issues and communication features of the algorithm. Key results include reduced communication pivoting for both the “analyze” A-mode and repeated B-mode factorizations, and effective general-purpose data distributions useful incrementally to trade-off process-column load balance in factorization against triangular solve performance.     Quaternary Stratigraphy and Depositional History of Glacial Lake Willard, Huron County, Ohio

    Author Institution: Department of Geology, University of Akron ; Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological SurveySeveral borings and trenches across the Lake Willard Basin, Huron County, Ohio showed the presence of at least 2 tills and 2 glaciofluvial sequences. The youngest glaciofluvial sequence was overlain by marl and lacustrine silts correlated to classical Lake Willard, which in turn were overlain by organic soils, muck and peat. Wood from the upper part of the marl indicated that the lake possibly began to evaporate or drain as early as 12,500 Y.B.P. (years before present). Silts containing fragments of herbaceous vegetation and finally peat containing a stump and log of Thuja occidentalis (northern white cedar) indicated a swamp at 9,810 Y.B.P. Geomorphology and stratigraphy showed that the lake was probably not very deep during all or most of its existence. Fossiliferous marls suggested a very low energy environment after complete retreat of ice from the Willard area
