Kompolt: The Divided Village
This paper discusses the history of modern Kompolt, a village in Heves County, Hungary,
with a particular emphasis on its social history. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the
society of Kompolt was split along a number of lines and this essay focuses on just one
of these divisions, that between the Swabians and the Hungarians
A víz alatti mozgás mechanikája és idegi szabályozása = Mechanics and neural control of aquatic locomotion
| The mechanical and neural aspects of aquatic locomotion have been investigated on the level of individual agents as well as of coherent groups of individuals. We focused on central pattern generators of lampreys – a group of primitive vertebrates – and found that computational models of these networks of neurons fail to capture the behavior and the underlying mechanism of the real system. By reducing the complexity of existing models and by the use of analytic techniques a new mechanism of better performance has been proposed. Another focus of the research was the coherent motion of groups, where we again intended to identify the simplest underlying mechanism. It has been shown that relatively small groups of individuals are able to effectively communicate and come to ‘agreement’ with respect to a common direction of motion through spontaneous collisions; in bigger groups, the same mechanism is important but insufficient in itself
A történeti Magyarország statisztikai adatforrásai
Tanulmányunkban a 19. század végi, 20. század eleji magyar történelem tanulmányozásának négy kiemelt forráscsoportjával kívánunk foglalkozni.
Shape of an elastica under growth restricted by friction
We investigate the quasi-static growth of elastic fibers in the presence of
dry or viscous friction. An unusual form of destabilization beyond a critical
length is described. In order to characterize this phenomenon, a new definition
of stability against infinitesimal perturbations over finite time intervals is
proposed and a semi-analytical method for the determination of the critical
length is developed. The post-critical behavior of the system is studied by
using an appropriate numerical scheme based on variational methods. We find
post-critical shapes for uniformly distributed as well as for concentrated
growth and demonstrate convergence to a figure-8 shape for large lengths when
self-crossing is allowed. Comparison with simple physical experiments yields
reasonable accuracy of the theoretical predictions
Explaining the elongated shape of 'Oumuamua by the Eikonal abrasion model
The photometry of the minor body with extrasolar origin (1I/2017 U1)
'Oumuamua revealed an unprecedented shape: Meech et al. (2017) reported a shape
elongation b/a close to 1/10, which calls for theoretical explanation. Here we
show that the abrasion of a primordial asteroid by a huge number of tiny
particles ultimately leads to such elongated shape. The model (called the
Eikonal equation) predicting this outcome was already suggested in Domokos et
al. (2009) to play an important role in the evolution of asteroid shapes.Comment: Accepted by the Research Notes of the AA
Mindennapok Granite Cityben
A tanulmány célja a 20. század elején az USA-ba érkező elvándorlók érkezés utáni
mindennapjainak bemutatása egy Illinois állambeli város, Granite City példáján keresztül.
A vizsgálat
mikroszinten,

legfőbb

az volt,
hogy

A
a
város gyors növekedéséhez és indusztrializációjához. A munka részletekbe
menően igyekszik bemutatni az első generáció kulturális életét, lehetőségeit, felvázolva
a különböző egyesületek munkáját. Három generáción keresztül vizsgálja a betelepült
családok változásait nyelvi, kulturális és szociális tekintetben, rávilágítva a kultúraváltás,
asszimiláció
esetleges

the United States in the beginning of the 20
century, with the example of Granite City,
Illinois. The research was conducted on a micro level, as a case study. The most important
question was which town did people departing from a previously examined settlement
choose for permanent relocation. After introducing the settlement and giving a short
overview of its history, the paper examines the living conditions of the immigrants, with
a special focus on the process how they transitioned from usually self-supporting farmers
into industrial workers. Of course, this induced conflict on both personal and commu-
th
nity levels. The Hungarian (and some other European) immigrants contributed to Gran-
ite City’s fast industrialization. The paper attempts to give a detailed picture of the First
Generation’s cultural life, opportunities, sketching up the work of their civil societies.
The changes in language, culture, and social relations are viewed through three generations
