Small excitonic complexes in a disk-shaped quantum dot
Confined excitonic complexes in two dimensions, consisting of N_e electrons
and N_h holes, are studied by means of Bethe-Goldstone equations. Systems with
up to twelve pairs, and asymmetric configurations with N_e \ne N_h are
considered. The weak confinement regime gives indication of weak binding or
even unbinding in the triexciton and the four-exciton system, and binding in
the higher complexes.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physica

Ultra-Broadband Directional Couplers Using Microstrip with Dielectric Overlay in Millimeter-Wave Band
Nowadays, millimeter-wave systems are being a key factor to develop wide band applications. In this paper, a directional coupler in millimeter-wave band using dielectric overlay is presented. This leads us to technology aspects, in directional coupler design, are key points to achieve the proper response of the circuit. The coupler proposed in this paper covers the 15-45 GHz band and its response has 15-dB coupling-level, 1-dB coupling-ripple and a reflection coefficient better than 10 dB
The Effect of Haptic Feedback on Basic Social. Interaction within Shared Virtual Environments
This paper describes an experiment that studies the effect of basic haptic feedback in creating a sense of social interaction within a shared virtual environment (SVE). Although there have been a number of studies investigating the effect of haptic feedback on collaborative task performance, they do not address the effect it has in inducing social presence. The purpose of this experiment is to show that haptic feedback enhances the sense of social presence within a mediated environment. An experiment was carried out using a shared desktop based virtual environment where 20 remotely located couples who did not know one another had to solve a puzzle together. In 10 groups they had shared haptic communication through their hands, and in another group they did not. Hence the haptic feedback was not used for completing the task itself, but rather as a means of social interacting â communicating with the other participant. The results suggest that basic haptic feedback increases the sense of social presence within the shared VE
Internal transitions of negatively charged magnetoexcitons in quantum dots
We report calculations of oscillator strengths for the far infrared
absorption of light by the excitonic complexes Xn- (the excess charge, n,
ranging from one to four) confined in quantum dots. The magnetic field is
varied in an interval which corresponds to ``filling factors'' between 2 and
3/5. Electron-hole interaction effects are seen in the deviations of the peak
positions from the Kohn lines, and in the spreading of the oscillator strengths
over a few final states. Transition densities are used as an additional tool to
characterize the absorption peaks.Comment: Presented as a poster in the Third Stig Lundqvist Conference on

The CI-ASD Program: Implementation of Contextual Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) with Latino Families (Preliminary Report)
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing differences that affect their participation in daily activities and routines. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the U.S. However, Latino children are diagnosed two years later than white children. Latino families still have the greatest disparities in accessing ASD resources throughout the U.S. compared to white families. The lack of ASD services and resources led to decreased parental self-efficacy, quality of life, and increased child behavioral problems.
Contextual Interventions Adapted for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) are an emerging intervention for occupational therapy (OT) practitioners. Recent literature shows improvement in child participation and parental self-efficacy when combining sensory processing knowledge with a coaching approach within a family-centered context.
While some evidence supports the application of CI-ASD in improving children\u27s participation and promoting a sense of efficacy, this intervention has not been implemented within the Latino Community.
The purpose of this capstone was to examine the following research questions: Does CI-ASD increase the quality of life in Latino Families? Does CI-ASD promote Latino parenting sense of efficacy? Does CI-ASD promote children\u27s participation in Latino family activities and routines?https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1072/thumbnail.jp
Idea: Electronic Writing in L2: Accuracy Vs Other Outcomes
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://www.jstor.org/.This article describes the effects of dialogue journaling through e-mail on the language produced by two
groups (experimental and control) of first-semester-Spanish college students. The independent variable was the use of
electronic mail while the dependent variables were accuracy and number of words per message. Quantitative results
showed that the control group significantly outperformed the experimental group regarding grammatical accuracy. Nonsignificant differences for either lexical accuracy or number of words were found. For qualitative analysis, a
questionnaire administered to both groups requested their opinions on the effectiveness and attitude towards the
journaling technique. The authors concluded that, although the e-mail medium promoted a more positive attitude
towards the language, dialogue journals via e-mail did not improve grammar skills. Thus, suggestions are offered to
modify instruction to enhance other positive results from the use of electronic writing in L2, thereby providing a way to
incorporate authentic, real-life writing tasks, develop better classroom rapport, and allow advantages to students
otherwise reluctant to speak in class
If You Canât Take the Heat: Cultural Beliefs about Questionable Conduct, Stigma, Punishment, and Withdrawal among Mexican Police Officers
We introduce the concept of cultural beliefs about questionable conduct, and examine how these beliefs interact with stigma consciousness to influence punishment and two withdrawal behaviors: turnover and absenteeism. We used a sample of Mexican police officers in a border city and implemented a mixed method design, paying attention to the national, occupational, and organizational context of this setting. We conducted a qualitative phase to explore the prevalence and meaning of occupational stigma and four cultural beliefs about questionable conduct: greed, toughness, wariness, and savvy. The results of this phase helped us develop a context-relevant measure of cultural beliefs about questionable conduct using Mexican proverbs. The results of the quantitative phase indicated that, contingent upon stigma consciousness, beliefs about questionable conduct affected received punishment, turnover, and absenteeism. We discuss the theoretical and behavioral implications of our findings for socialization, identity management, occupational stigma, corruption, and ethical behavior
