The Landscape of Ontology Reuse in Linked Data

Abstract. The uptake of Linked Data (LD) has promoted the proliferation of datasets and their associated ontologies for describing different domains. Ac-cording to LD principles, developers should reuse as many available terms as possible to describe their data. Importing ontologies or referring to their terms’ URIs are the two main ways to reuse knowledge from available ontologies. In this paper, we have analyzed 18589 terms appearing within 196 ontologies in-cluded in the Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV) registry with the aim of under-standing the current state of ontology reuse in the LD context. In order to char-acterize the landscape of ontology reuse in this context, we have extracted sta-tistics about currently reused elements, calculated ratios for reuse, and drawn graphs about imports and references between ontologies. Keywords: ontology, vocabulary, reuse, linked data, ontology impor

The knowledge of the didactic possibilities of the regional geology is necessary because it will facilitate the active learning of Geology. To help with this, a series of didactic activities are presented. These activities are useful depending on the difficulty and suitability the teacher perceives for the students.peerReviewe

Detecting Good Practices and Pitfalls when Publishing Vocabularies on the Web

    Get PDF
The uptake of Linked Data (LD) has promoted the proliferation of datasets and their associated ontologies bringing their semantic to the data being published. These ontologies should be evaluated at different stages, both during their development and their publication. As important as correctly modelling the intended part of the world to be captured in an ontology, is publishing, sharing and facilitating the (re)use of the obtained model. In this paper, 11 evaluation characteristics, with respect to publish, share and facilitate the reuse, are proposed. In particular, 6 good practices and 5 pitfalls are presented, together with their associated detection methods. In addition, a grid-based rating system is generated. Both contributions, the set of evaluation characteristics and the grid system, could be useful for ontologists in order to reuse existing LD vocabularies or to check the one being built

    Licensing patterns for Linked Data

Rights expression languages declare the permitted and prohibited actions to be performed on a resource. Along this work, six rights expression languages are compared, abstracting their commonalities and outlining their underlying pattern. Linked Data, which can be object of protection by the intellectual property laws or its access be restricted by an access control system, can be the asset in rights expressions. The requirements for a pattern for licensing Linked Data resources are listed

Linked Data Rights 2.0: extension of ODRL for Licensing Linked Data

Linked Data assets (RDF triples, graphs, datasets, mappings...) can be object of protection by the intellectual property law, the database law or its access or publication be restricted by other legal reasons (personal data pro- tection, security reasons, etc.). Publishing a rights expression along with the digital asset, allows the rightsholder waiving some or all of the IP and database rights (leaving the work in the public domain), permitting some operations if certain conditions are satisfied (like giving attribution to the author) or simply reminding the audience that some rights are reserved

Application of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) methodology in biological studies on marine resources: sex determination of Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816)

The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is usually used in biomedicine as an indicator of the accuracy of diagnostic tests. However, this measure of discrimination has been little used in other areas, such as animal biology or ecology. We present a novel application of an ROC analysis in which gonad colour was used to determine the sex of Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816), a sea urchin of considerable commercial interest. A better classifier than gonad colour was obtained by transforming these colours through flexible logistic generalized additive models.Peer Reviewe

The most common handball injuries: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Handball is a team sport involving a great physical demand from its practitioners in which a high number of injuries occur, affecting individual and collective performance. Knowledge of the injuries is of great importance for their prevention. The objective of the present study was to identify, locate and compare the most frequent injuries and injury mechanisms in handball practice. It was carried out following the Preferred Informed Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The source of data collection was direct consultation of the PubMed and Medline databases. Several keywords were used for the documentary retrieval, and the quality of the studies that were selected was evaluated. Of the 707 studies retrieved, only 27 were considered appropriate for the review, and quality scores were obtained that ranged from 10 to 26 points, out of a maximum of 28. The most frequent injuries in handball players are located in the lower limbs (thigh, knee and ankle), and in the shoulder in the upper limbs. Regarding the playing position, the players who play over the 6-m line are the most affected by injuries, while the women players have a higher probability of injury. Most injuries occur during competition.Gobierno regional de Extremadura | Ref. GR 2114

Introduction:  the acute appendicitis is the surgical disease that is frequently diagnosed and treated in patients with  non traumatic acute surgical abdomen. Objective:  to characterize the behavior of patients with acute appendicitis diagnosis in the Integral Health Center ¨ Maria Genoveva Guerrero Ramos¨,  in Montalban,  Metropolitan District of Caracas, Venezuela.Method: descriptive, prospective and transversal research in disease persons that received urgent surgical treatment for acute appendicitis , since september 1rst, 2007 to september 31, 2011. The analyzed variables were: age, sex, anatomopathological state of the appendix at the moment of the surgery, surgical procedure, complications and conditions at the time of the hospitalization. There were applied the percentage and relatives frequencies. Results: the male sex prevailed (162 patients, 61.8%); most of the surgically treated patients were between 17 and 31 (138, 52. 67%). Most of them had the appendix in suppuration stage, 93 (35.50%), while the gangrene was found in 58 (22.13%) and the perforation with peritonitis in 29 (11.07%). The appendicectomy was practiced in 213 patients ( 81.29%). The severe sepsis in 17 patients (6.48%) was the most frequent complication. Conclusions: the presence of the disease in males between 17 and 31 years for both sexes, and the appendicectomy and primary closure of the surgical wound, no matter the evolutive state of the appendix. The severe sepsis prevailed as well as the infection of the surgical wound.
