Translational Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Diagnostic Pathology in Lymphoid Neoplasms: A Comprehensive and Evolutive Analysis
Genomic analysis and digitalization of medical records have led to a big data scenario
within hematopathology. Artificial intelligence and machine learning tools are increasingly used to
integrate clinical, histopathological, and genomic data in lymphoid neoplasms. In this study, we
identified global trends, cognitive, and social framework of this field from 1990 to 2020. Metadata
were obtained from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database in January 2021. A total of 525
documents were assessed by document type, research areas, source titles, organizations, and countries. SciMAT and VOSviewer package were used to perform scientific mapping analysis. Geographical distribution showed the USA and People’s Republic of China as the most productive
countries, reporting up to 190 (36.19%) of all documents. A third-degree polynomic equation predicts that future global production in this area will be three-fold the current number, near 2031.
Thematically, current research is focused on the integration of digital image analysis and genomic
sequencing in Non-Hodgkin lymphomas, prediction of chemotherapy response and validation of
new prognostic models. These findings can serve pathology departments to depict future clinical
and research avenues, but also, public institutions and administrations to promote synergies and
optimize funding allocation.Andalusia

The earliest evidence of true lambdoid craniosynostosis: the case of “Benjamina”, a Homo heidelbergensis child
Background The authors report the morphological and
neuroimaging findings of an immature human fossil
(Cranium 14) diagnosed with left lambdoid synostosis.
Discussion The skull was recovered at the Sima de los
Huesos site in Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain). Since the human
fossil remains from this site have been dated to a minimum
age of 530,000 years, this skull represents the earliest
evidence of craniosynostosis occurring in a hominid. A
brief historical review of craniosynostosis and cranial
deformation is provided

Forgery detection on an Arabic illuminated manuscript by micro-Raman and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy
An Arabic manuscript, supposed to be from the 14th century, was investigated and its components (pigments and dyestuffs) characterised using micro-Raman and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, the latter employing a portable XRF/X-ray diffraction (XRD) system. The presence of anatase, rutile, calcite, barite, zinc oxide, carbon black, vermilion, hematite, goethite, β-naphthol, copper phthalocyanine, pigmosol green and a brass-based pigment was detected in the different zones of the illuminated manuscript. The detection of titanium oxides, barite and organic synthetic colourants such as β-naphthol and copper phthalocyanine and derived compounds provides indisputable indication of forging, repainting or retouching after the 19th century in the image of the manuscript. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.The authors acknowledge assistance from the C2RMF-AGLAE staff (especially Dr Jacques Castaing), English editing from one the reviewers and financial support from contracts MEC/FECYT 2007, JAE Doc 088, the program EU-ARTECH (FP6, European Union, contract RII3-CT-2004-506171) and the projects MAT2008-02008MAT (National I+D+I 008-2011) and P08-HUM04188 (Excellency).Peer Reviewe
A surgical technique of spinal cord cell transplantation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
3 p., 4 figures and references. We report an original method for implanting bone marrow stem cells within the spinal cord parenchyma. This method was used for the experimental treatment of patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The methodology is reproducible and devoid of major complications even in patients showing significant spinal atrophy. Therefore, this report describes a surgical procedure that could be used in other experimental treatments involving the intraspinal delivery of stem cells. This study has been supported partially by a grant from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III EC07/90762, RETICS RD/0010/2012, enhancement line I3SNS, INT07/184, the Fundación Diogenes and by the Fundación Séneca 08859/PI/08.Peer reviewe
Acute and chronic MRI changes in the spine and spinal cord after surgical stem cell grafting in patients with definite amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Post-infusion injuries are unrelated with clinical impairment
[Objective] To report MRI spinal changes after surgical infusion of bone marrow stem cells (BMSc) in ALS patients and assess their correlation with clinical events and functional performance.[Methods] BMSc were surgically injected in the thoracic spinal cord of 11 ALS patients (6/5 male/female; median age 46 years). We performed first-week and third, sixth, ninth and twelfth post-surgical months spinal MRIs. The spinal changes in the postsurgical week and follow-up MRIs, as well as clinical events, functional scales and respiratory and electromyography data, were longitudinally monitored. Correlations between the imaging and clinical data were evaluated with the Spearman's test.[Results] Transient extradural fluid collections (100%), transient spinal cord T2 hyperintensity (81.8%), and chronic spinal cord deformities (63.6%) were the dominating MRI changes. Spinal cord hemorrhages (27.3%) and cystic myelomalacia (1/11 patients) were important although unusual findings. During the follow-up, minor adverse events of mild to moderate intensity eventually improved. Initial and follow-up imaging scores showed a strongly positive correlation (r 0.879, P < 0.001). The initial and delayed clinical scores did not correlate. There was no significant correlation between any of the imaging scores and clinical data.[Conclusions] Infusion of BMSc produces a variety of spinal changes apparently unrelated with clinical events and disease worsening. We would like to acknowledge the statistical support from the Education and Research Unit (Dr. Andrés Carrillo) of the University Hospital Morales Meseguer.
