Epileptic syndromes of newborn and infant

    No full text
Epileptic syndromes are categorized by age of onset, seizure types, clinical features, electroencephalographic findings, and response to treatment. The International League Against Epilepsy uses the age-related expression of these syndromes, allowing easy identification. Early recognition and identification of epileptic syndromes is essential to provide valuable information on management and prognosis. (Turk Arch Ped 2011; 46: 191-5

    Familial facial palsy

Facial palsy is a sporadic disease related to cold exposure, infections and psychogenic factors. In this case report, we present a 14 years old boy with familial facial palsy. Familial cases had been rarely reported. Risk of recurrence is increased at familial cases. Sporadic and familial cases must be treated with same approach. (Turk Arch Ped 2012; 47: 64-6

Flupirtine may stop the progressive course of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive devastating disease. Along with the slow measles virus infection, apoptotic cell death has shown to be one of the major mechanisms at the pathogenesis. Volume reduction in frontotemporal cortex has seen in patients at early stages of disease. At present, there is no effective treatment to completely cure SSPE. Oral isoprinosine and intrathecal or intraventricular alpha-interferon are anti viral therapies with limited success

Evaluation of the main parameters affecting seismic performance of the

Low and mid-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings consist of an important portion of the building stock in many earthquake prone countries. Therefore understanding their seismic behaviour is important for mitigation studies. This study aims to evaluate how much and when; seismic code, number of stories, concrete strength, amount of transverse reinforcement and infill-wall contribution parameters are important for seismic performances of RC buildings. Seismic performances of the models reflecting different cases are determined for different performance levels and seismic loading conditions. Based on the considered values of the parameters, it is concluded that: modern code specifications and higher transverse reinforcement 50%, the concrete strength up to 66%, infill-walls 15% and number of story 55% increase the seismic performance for life safety level. Evaluations on the effect of the considered parameters for different performance levels and seismic loadings in relation with other parameters are also given in this paper

Current therapies and future perspectives in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

    No full text
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a progressive neurological disorder of children and young adults caused by a measles virus that became defective by persisting in the host. According to the results of clinical trials, antiviral and/or immunomodulatory therapy can slow the progression of the disease and improve life expectancy in patients. However, its long-term effects and eventual outcome remain debatable due to conflicting results and its lack of effect on the rapidly progressive form of the disease. Possible future therapies for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis are RNAi and antiapoptotic agents, which are currently in the hypothetical and experimental stages of research

[Purpose] Cerebral palsy is a sensorimotor disorder that affects the control of posture and movement. The Nintendo (R) Wii Fit offers an inexpensive, enjoyable, suitable alternative to more complex systems for children with cerebral palsy. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacacy of Wii-based balance therapy for children with ambulatory cerebral palsy. [Subjects] This pilot study design included fourteen ambulatory patients with cerebral palsy (11 males, 3 females; mean age 12.07 +/- 3.36 years). [Methods] Balance functions before and after treatment were evaluated using one leg standing, the functional reach test, the timed up and go test, and the 6-minute walking test. The physiotherapist prescribed the Wii Fit activities, and supervised and supported the patients during the therapy sessions. Exercises were performed in a standardized program 2 times a week for 12 weeks. [Results] Balance ability of every patient improved. Statistically significant improvements were found in all outcome measures after 12 weeks. [Conclusion] The results suggest that the Nintendo (R) Wii Fit provides a safe, enjoyable, suitable and effective method that can be added to conventional treatments to improve the static balance of patients with cerebral palsy; however, further work is required

Water epilepsy: A report of three cases

    No full text
Water epilepsy is a rare form of the reflex epilepsies. In this paper, three patients who were followed up in our outpatient clinic is presented. Psychomotor development and neurological examination of patients were normal. The most important factor in the treatment approach is the temperature of the water. In treatment, avoiding bath with hot water or prophylaxis with benzodiazepines should be considered first. (Turk Arch Ped 2011; 46:259-60
