    Effect of thermal cycling on microtensile bond strengths of various adhesives to dentin

    Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on microtensile bond strengths (MTBS) of various adhesives to dentin. Methods: Three adhesive systems including a 1-step self-etch adhesive system (G-Bond), a 2-step self-etch adhesive system (AdheSE), and an etch&rinse adhesive system (Prime & Bond NT) were evaluated. Twenty-four extracted molars were used. After grinding the coronal enamel surface, the teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=4) (G-Bond, G-Bond+thermal cycling, AdheSE, AdheSE+thermal cycling, Prime & Bond NT, and Prime & Bond NT+thermal cycling). Adhesives were applied according to each manufacturer’s instructions followed by resin composite polymerization. Groups without thermal cycling were stored in distilled water at 37 0C for 24 hours and used for immediate testing of the MTBS. Groups with thermal cycling were subjected to thermocycling (10.000 cycles between 5 0C and 55 0C, for a dwell time of 30 seconds). For MTBS test, teeth were sectioned occluso-gingivally into a serial slabs and further sectioned into composite-dentin sticks. Testing was performed on a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons tests (α=0.05) were performed on all data. Results: The results of the MTBS test showed that the highest bond strengths were observed in etch&rinse adhesive groups (3 and 3T).     Cytotoxicity evaluation of methacrylate- and silorane-based composite resins

    <p><strong>Objectives:</strong> The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the cytotoxic effects of four composite resin materials with different content.</p> <p><strong>Material and Methods: </strong>Two traditional methacrylate-based (Clearfil AP-X, RefleXions), as well as a self-adhering methacrylate-based (Vertise Flow) and a silorane-based (Filtek Silorane) composite resin were tested in the experiment. Ten cylindrical specimens were made of each material, using a mould (2mm. thick and 8 mm. in diameter). An agar diffusion method was employed, and cytotoxicity rankings were determined using lysis index scores. For statistical analysis, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Amongst the composite resins, the silorane-based composite was found to be less cytotoxic than the methacrylate-based composite resins, which all had the same cytotoxicity ranking.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The silorane-based composite resin was considered more biocompatible than the methacrylate-based composite resins.</p&gt

    Determination of Erythrocyte Potassium and Glutathione Polymorphism in Saanen, Maltese and Turkish Hair Goats

    Main purpose of this study was to investigate genetic polymorphisms of Saanen (S), Maltese (M) and Turkish Hair (TH) goats based on erythrocyte potassium and glutathione types. It was also designed to detect the association between these components and some blood parameters depending on the breed comparisons. The phenotypic and alleles frequencies were calculated for potassium and glutathione types of all three breeds. The difference between low and high potassium (LK and HK, respectively) types for the means of erythrocyte potassium concentration (K-e) were statistically important for all breeds (p<0.01). The significant relationships between erythrocyte potassium types and blood parameters of erythrocyte sodium (Na-e), whole blood potassium (K-wb), plasma potassium (K-p), erythrocyte potassium (K-e) were observed for S and TH goats. On the other hand, the important relationships were detected between erythrocyte potassium types and blood parameters of whole blood sodium (Na-wb), Na-e K-wb, K-p, K-e, total monovalent cation concentration in erythrocyte (Na-e+K-e) for M goat breed (p<0.05). The correlation coefficient between Na-e and K-e blood parameters was important and it was ranged from -0.26 to -0.34. In addition, Maltese goat breeds had a higher K-e than the others but Na-e was higher in TH goats. Even if parity and birth type differences were not statistically important for all blood parameters, there was indication of significant differences for these values except hematocrit value (PCV), Na-p and GSH concentrations depending on the potassium types within breed (p<0.05) and also among all breed analyses (p<0.001)

    Objectives: Phaeochromocytoma (PHEO) occasionally associates with pathological lesions of the adrenal cortex. The coexistence of PHEO and pre-clinical Cushing's syndrome (PCS) of the same adrenal gland has rarely been reported. We report a case of PHEO and PCS originating from the same adrenal gland and discuss the peculiar diagnostic aspects of this entity. Clinical Presentation: A 64 yr old man was hospitalized to evaluate the right adrenal mass which was discovered incidentally by ultrasonography. He had a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. Blood pressure measurements were all normal during his hospital stay. Laboratory examination showed: urinary catecholamines were markedly increased. HbA1C of 14.3 %, midnight cortisol of 11(?g/dL), cortisol was not suppressed after the overnight 1 mg oral dexamethasone suppression test (DST): 3.42(?g/dL), 24 hr free cortisol in the urine : 213 µg/day (10-100), cortisol levels were suppressed more than 50% with 8 mg of dexamethasone. CT scan of the adrenal glands showed a 6 cm well encapsulated right adrenal mass together with a clearly normal left adrenal gland. MRI investigation of the sella turcica revealed a pituitary microadenoma on the right side of the adenohypophysis He was treated with ? and subsequent ? blockers after the diagnosis of PHEO and PCS was made. Right adrenalectomy was performed. The pathology showed typical PHEO with adrenocortical hyperplasia. VMA, metanefrin and free cortisol levels were normalized one month after surgery. Conclusion: The present report is a rare case of PHEO combined with PCS in the same adrenal gland

    Assessment of rockfall hazard around Afyon Castle, Turkey

    The Afyon Castle is a tourist destination and a historical site in the City of Afyon in Turkey. The Castle is located on a steep hill, with a height of 226 m. In close proximity to the Castle there are settlements. The hill consists of trachitic andesite. The rock contains columnar joints and flow layering. Owing to these discontinuities, blocks of varying sizes had fallen down. The settlement areas near the Castle are now in danger because of the rockfall risk. In this study, rockfall analysis was carried out along nine profiles of the hill. Fall-out distance, bounce height, kinetic energy and velocity of the rocks along each profile were investigated. The results of the analyses were evaluated, and the areas delineated as susceptible to rockfall risk are highlighted. Remedial measures including rock bolts and protective fences were suggested on the basis of the field observations and the rockfall risk evaluation

Three adhesive systems including a &lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;1-step self-etch adhesive system (G-Bond), a 2-step self-etch adhesive system (AdheSE), and an&lt;/span&gt; e&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;tch&amp;rinse adhesive system (&lt;/span&gt;Prime &amp; Bond NT) were evaluated. Twenty-four extracted molars were used. After grinding the coronal enamel surface, the teeth were &lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;randomly divided into 6 groups (&lt;em&gt;n&lt;/em&gt;=4) (G-Bond, G-Bond+thermal cycling, AdheSE, AdheSE+thermal cycling, &lt;/span&gt;Prime &amp; Bond NT, and Prime &amp; Bond NT+thermal cycling). Adhesives were applied according to each manufacturer’s instructions followed by resin composite polymerization.&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt; Groups without thermal cycling were stored in distilled water at 37 &lt;sup&gt;0&lt;/sup&gt;C for 24 hours and used for immediate testing of the MTBS. Groups with thermal cycling were subjected to thermocycling (10.000 cycles between 5 &lt;sup&gt;0&lt;/sup&gt;C and 55 &lt;sup&gt;0&lt;/sup&gt;C, for a dwell time of 30 seconds). For MTBS test, teeth were sectioned occluso-gingivally into a serial slabs &lt;/span&gt;and further sectioned into composite-dentin sticks.&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Testing was performed on a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons tests (&lt;em&gt;α&lt;/em&gt;=0.05) were performed on all data. &lt;strong&gt;Results:&lt;/strong&gt; The results of the MTBS test showed that the highest bond strengths were observed in e&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;tch&amp;rinse adhesive groups (3 and 3T).&lt;/span&gt; A statistically significant difference in MTBS was found between group 1 and group 1T (&lt;em&gt;p&lt;/em&gt;&lt;0.05). Moreover, there was no statistical difference in MTBS between group 1 and group 2 (&lt;em&gt;p&lt;/em&gt;=1.000). &lt;strong&gt;Conclusions:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt; Contrary to result with 1&lt;/span&gt;-step self-etch adhesive&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;, thermal cycling &lt;/span&gt;was found ineffective on the MTBS of the &lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;2&lt;/span
