Effects of environmental perturbations during postnatal development on the phenotypic integration of the skull

Integration and modularity are fundamental determinants of how natural selection effects evolutionary change in complex multivariate traits. Interest in the study of the specific developmental basis of integration through experimental approaches is fairly recent and it has mainly focused on its genetic determinants. In this study, we present evidence that postnatal environmental perturbations can modify the covariance structure by influencing the variance of some developmental processes relative to the variances of other processes that contribute to such structure. We analyzed the effects of the reduction of nutrient supply in different ontogenetic stages (i.e. before and after weaning, and from birth to adulthood) in Rattus norvegicus. Our results show that this environmental perturbation alters the phenotypic variation/covariation structure of the principal modules of the skull (base, vault, and face). The covariance matrices of different treatment groups exhibit low correlations and are significantly different, indicating that the treatments influence covariance structure. Postnatal nutrient restriction also increases the variance of somatic growth. This increased variance drives an increase in overall integration of cranial morphology through the correlated allometric effects of size variation. The extent of this increase in integration depends on the time and duration of the nutritional restriction. These results support the conclusion that environmental perturbations can influence integration and thus covariance structure via developmental plasticity.Fil: Gonzalez, Paula Natalia. Field detection of Tritrichomonas foetus through loop mediated isothermal amplification with CELDA

    Get PDF
An affordable, portable, and easy-to-build instrument was implemented to perform loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) in the field. Controlled by Arduino, CELDA heats the reaction tubes, reads the intensity of green fluorescent light and stores data in a computer. In the laboratory and in the field, CELDA was successfully used for the detection of Tritrichomonas foetus DNA in less than 60 min and helped distinguish positives with less difficulty than visual inspection.Fil: Oyhenart, Jorge. Phenolic composition, antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of Cucurbitaceae fruits

    Get PDF
Fruits have been known as great source of bioactive natural compounds with potential biological effects. The objective of this work was to perform digestive enzyme inhibition assays with methanolic extracts of six fruits from the family Cucurbitaceas. The extracts were also analyzed for antioxidant capacity (DPPH·), qualitative and quantitative composition of chemical compounds and nutrients. The fruit extracts showed similar antioxidant activities and had substantially different total polyphenolic contents. In addition, the six fruit extracts examined, at a concentration of 100 μg/mL, significantly inhibited β glucosidase and lipase activity, in vitro. These results may be related to the profile of polyphenolic compounds. In conclusion, it can be said that cucurbits fruits are a valuable horticultural product, based on their rich and beneficial chemical composition.Fil: Ramirez, Maria Rosana. This paper addresses the effect of a reduction of uterine blood flow (RUB) on postcranial bone growth in rats. The objectives were: (1) to discover and characterize the changes evoked by growth retardation through a reduction in placental blood flow, (2) to see if the resulting growth retardation is different in each bone, and (3) to analyze any sex-specific features. RUB was induced by the partial bending of uterine vessels at day 1 of pregnancy. Control and sham-operated animals were also included. The animals were X-rayed at birth. The lengths and widths of the humerus, radius, and femur and pelvic length, interischial, interpubic, and pubic widths were measured. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and LSD post hoc tests. The intersubject analysis showed significant differences between groups and non-significant differences between sexes. In males, sham-operated and RUB showed significant differences in pelvic lengths and widths, and humeral, radial, femoral, and tibial widths. In females, there were significant differences only for humeral widths, radial lengths and widths, and femoral and tibial widths. We conclude that reduced blood flow delays appendicular bone growth as observed at birth. Pelvic length was more affected than that of the limbs. The widths of the pelvic and limbs bones, in turn, were more altered than the lengths, and the growth of the males more than that of the females. Partial bending of uterine vessels compromised postcranial growth, though under such disadvantageous circumstances the females proved to be more capable of growing and thus more resilient than the males.Fil: Oyhenart, Evelia Edith.

    Get PDF

Effect of intergenerational chronic undernutrition on ponderal, and linear growth

The aim of this paper was to analyze if intergenerational undernutrition causes growth retardation in weight and body length in two generations of rats and, if so, to assess whether the delay is cumulative. Male and female rats were assigned to one of the following groups: (1) control: they were fed ad libitum and constituted the parental generation (P), and (2) undernourished generations (F1 and F2): they were fed on 75% of the control diet. Animals were weighed and X-rayed every ten days from 20 to 100 days old in order to measure total body length. Also, body mass index was calculated. Data were processed by ANOVA and LSD post hoc tests. Impairment in weight, body length, and body mass index was found in both generations; nevertheless growth retardation was greater in F2, indicating a cumulative effect of nutritional stress. Sex differences were found, since the cumulative effect of generational undernutrition was greater and earlier in males than in females. It is concluded that when the undernutrition acts with constant intensity during several generations, the growth retardation is cumulative, indicating a negative secular trend.Instituto de Genética VeterinariaFacultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Get PDF
The aim was to know and to analyse the prevalence of undernutrition and body composition and proportion in relationship to socio-environmental conditions of residence in children of two adjacent departments in the province of Mendoza: San Rafael (SR) and General Alvear (GA). A crosssectional anthropometrical study was performed in 5.118 children from 5 to 12 years old. Body weight, height, sitting height, arm circumference and triceps skinfold were measured and the sitting height ratio and muscle and body mass index, fat areas of the arm calculated. Prevalences of low weight-for-age (LW/A), low height-for-age (LH/A) and low weight-for-height (LW/H) were estimated using NHANES III. The socio-environmental variables were surveyed using semi-structured questioner. Prevalences of LH/A were similar in both populations and LW/A and LW/H higher in GA. The lower limb shortening was higher in SR, the deficits of muscle and adipose tissue in GA. It is concluded that whereas GA shows a higher prevalence of acute malnutrition associate to body composition changes as consequence of the social insecurity; in SR, is evident that nutritional status and life quality are better than GA surpassing those adverse conditions that affected the early stages of development as a mirror in body proportion change.Fil: Garraza, Mariela.
