Background: ‘Internet addiction’ is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life of a person. We designed this study in order to evaluate the predictor effect of depression, loneliness, anger and interpersonal relationship styles for internet addiction as well as develop a model. Subjects and methods: Forty (40) male internet addicted patients were selected from our hospital’s internet Addiction Outpatient Clinic. During the study, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the State Trait Anger Expression Scale (STAXI), the UCLA-Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), and the Interpersonal Relationship Styles Scale (IRSS) were used for the evaluation of the patients. Results: The results of this study showed that the ‘duration of internet use’ (B=2.353, p=0.01) and STAXI ‘anger in’ subscale (B=1.487, p=0.01) were the predictors of internet addiction. Conclusion: When the clinicians suspect for the internet overuse, regulation of internet usage might be helpful. Psychiatric treatments for expressing anger and therapies that focus on validation of the feelings may be useful

Objective: To assess the effects of regular medication administration, diet, sleep, and physical activity provided by hospital care on inflammatory markers in schizophrenia patients. The primary hypothesis of our study is that the assembly of various factors, will reduce low-grade inflammation in a short period. Materials and Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study involved 106 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who met the exclusion and inclusion criteria. Inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratios (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratios (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios (PLR), C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratios (CAR), and systemic immune inflammation indices (SII) were calculated at the time of hospital admission and after three weeks. Results: The mean age of the participants was 39.0±13.1 years and the majority were male (n: 75). Reductions were observed in all inflammatory markers after three weeks. The CRP decreased from a median value of 2.6 (interquartile range (IQR): 1.1-5.3) to 1.90 (IQR: 0.85-3.30) (p=0.001, effect size=0.375). The CAR changed from 0.064 (IQR: 0.026-0.115) to 0.043 (IQR: 0.017-0.077) (p=0.005, effect size=0.371). The NLR demonstrated a significant reduction from 2.31 (IQR: 1.73-3.24) to 1.73 (IQR: 1.28-2.27) (p<0.001, effect size=0.647). The SII decreased from 634 (IQR: 425-870) to 470 (IQR: 321-645) (p<0.001, effect size=0.577). The PLR went down from 9.85 (IQR: 7.4-12.7) to 8.21 (IQR: 6.22-10.3) (p<0.001, effect size=0.547). Lastly, the MLR reduced from 0.297 (IQR: 0.221-0.378) to 0.258 (IQR: 0.195-0.319) (p<0.001, effect size=0.522). Conclusion: This study underscores the influence of regular antipsychotic treatment and hospital care in reducing inflammation markers like NLR, MLR, PLR, SII, and CAR in schizophrenia patients. Future studies should explore the potential of markers like CAR and SII in detecting low-grade inflammation, and further probe into the role of sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, emphasising the paramount role of comprehensive hospital care

Aims: Many studies have shown the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on postpartum depression (PPD) as a stressor. In addition, there have been many changes in the pandemic process, such as vaccination and removal of restrictions. However, few studies have been conducted on the psychological effects of changing conditions. In this study, we aimed to examine the frequency of PPD and the associated sociodemographic–obstetric factors in mothers who gave birth or were in the last pregnancy period in the fourth wave of the pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 211 women who underwent a postpartum checkup between December 2021 and August 2022. All women had given birth or passed the last part of their pregnancy in the fourth wave of the pandemic. PPD was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). In addition, the authors assessed sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics with a form. Results: The prevalence of PPD was 22.7% (EPDS cut-off score ≥ 13). EPDS scores were higher in those with inadequate social support, fear of childbirth, or having a past psychiatric illness. Conclusions: In the late pandemic, the negative effect on PPD does not seem to continue. However, PPD remains a significant public health problem in Turkey. In addition, some sociodemographic characteristics associated with PPD continue to pose risks

Objective: We examined the gender differences and attachment styles with regard to the phenomenology of jealousy among married individuals. Method: The study included 86 married couples who presented to the Marriage Counselling Centre at the Bakırköy Research and Training Hospital for Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurosurgery. Subjects were evaluated in terms of sociodemographic data, the Romantic Jealousy Questionnaire, and the Adult Attachment Style Scale. Results: In our population, 79% of males and 66% of females defined themselves as jealous. Females had higher emotional and cognitive scores than male participants. Females had higher scores on the negative effects of jealousy. Female commitment scores were higher than those of males. Ambivalent attachment was positively correlated with physical, emotional, and behavioural responses to jealousy and inadequacy as a reason for jealousy. Conclusions: We suggest that a multidimensional approach permits to identify and guide responses to the challenge of romantic jealousy

Although the internet is used effectively and beneficially in every aspect of life, several users have been experiencing some problems due to excessive and uncontrolled use. While the term “internet addiction” still remains controversial, disturbed family relationships are considered to be a diagnostic criterion. The use of the internet, even in non-excessive levels, is associated with disturbance in family and social life. As considering from systemic point of view; while family relationships may be disturbed with internet addiction, people who have problems with their family relationships also may use internet excessively. This case report is composed of both the cases with excessive internet usage and those who had problems in complying with the changes in their family systems following the decrease in duration of internet usage during the treatment process

How Consumer Motivations to Participate in Sharing Economy Differ Across Developed and Developing Countries: A Comparative Study of Türkiye and Canada

    No full text
Extreme and fundamental changes in the economy and social life in the 2000s, fueled by technological development, pushed people toward new ways of consumption known as “Sharing Economy” (SE). Consumers’ motivations to participate in SE are still not completely clear because of SE’s relatively short history and hazy boundaries. This study aimed to contribute to closing that gap. This research also looks at how consumers’ motives for SE differ across countries. Data from 678 people (440 in Istanbul, Türkiye, and 238 in Toronto, Canada) were collected and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that economic benefits, modern lifestyle, enjoyment, and ecological sustainability concerns substantially impact consumers’ participation in SE in both Türkiye and Canada. However, consumers in both countries are unaffected by product diversity, ubiquitous availability, sense of belonging, or convenience. In addition, altruism influences Turkish consumers but not Canadians; this could be explained by Türkiye’s being a Middle Eastern country with a feminine cultural structure. Even though Türkiye and Canada are very different in economic, social, cultural, and historical terms, their outcomes are remarkably similar. These identical findings indicate that consumers’ stimulations are similar in participating SE regardless of their country of origin. This paper is unique as it is the first research comparing Turkish and Canadian consumers’ motivations. This study is significant for both literature and practitioners in that it contributes to better understanding consumer incentives in SE
