Prevalence of Respiratory Symptoms and Allergic Sensitivity in Multiply Handicapped Children

    Get PDF
Among the many challenges of providing care for children with multiple physical and developmental handicaps is the proper management of their respiratory difficulties. This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in children attending a multidisciplinary clinic for handicapped children. We also used several methods to estimate the prevalence of allergic sensitivity in children with respiratory complaints. Questionnaires concerning respiratory symptoms were completed by the parents of 104 patients. The most frequent complaint reported was snoring in 41% of the children. Of the 39% who had multiple respiratory symptoms, 85% had detectable allergen- specific IgE to cat, dog, or house-dust mites. We conclude that most handicapped children with multiple respiratory complaints are allergically sensitive

    II.3. The Pottery Fabrics

In pottery studies one of the major points of departure is the classification of the raw material. The raw material is the fired clay with its intentional or natural additions (inclusions), such as mineral grains and organic remains, etc. depending on the geological conditions of the area (here the Nile valley and the neighbouring desert areas). This fired clay is called “fabric”. A classification system is necessary to divide the ceramic material into groups for better understanding of the ..

Hope in dirt: report of the Fort Apache Workshop on Forensic Sedimentology Applications to Cultural Property Crime, 15—19 October 2018

A 2018 workshop on the White Mountain Apache Tribe lands in Arizona examined ways to enhance investigations into cultural property crime (CPC) through applications of rapidly evolving methods from archaeological science. CPC (also looting, graverobbing) refers to unauthorized damage, removal, or trafficking in materials possessing blends of communal, aesthetic, and scientific values. The Fort Apache workshop integrated four generally partitioned domains of CPC expertise: (1) theories of perpetrators’ motivations and methods; (2) recommended practice in sustaining public and community opposition to CPC; (3) tactics and strategies for documenting, investigating, and prosecuting CPC; and (4) forensic sedimentology—uses of biophysical sciences to link sediments from implicated persons and objects to crime scenes. Forensic sedimentology served as the touchstone for dialogues among experts in criminology, archaeological sciences, law enforcement, and heritage stewardship. Field visits to CPC crime scenes and workshop deliberations identified pathways toward integrating CPC theory and practice with forensic sedimentology’s potent battery of analytic methods

RESEÑA DEL LIBRO “CERAMICS AND SOCIETY. A TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACH TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSEMBLAGES” DE VALENTINE ROUX (Traducción Isabelle Druc)

Canaanite jars from Memphis as evidence for trade and political relationships in the Middle Bronze Age

    No full text
Trade between two regions often necessitates that the respective parties are political entities. This was indeed the case for trade between Egypt and the Levant during the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000-1550 BC, MBA) and Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550-1200 BC, LBA). Scientific analyses of Canaanite jars, transport vessels, from the site of Memphis, Egypt provided an ideal proxy for examining the relationship between trade and politics. During the MBA, Levantine peoples were present at the site of Tell el-Dabca in the eastern Nile Delta. However, archaeologically there is little evidence for contact between these peoples and the Egyptians at Memphis. Results of comparison of MBA Canaanite jars from both sites suggest the political situation fostered trade with the Levant and limited interaction with the Egyptians. During the LBA, Egyptian kings controlled territory in the Levant. A comparison of MBA and LBA Canaanite jars from Memphis revealed that the political changes in some cases affected the trade partners but not in others. Further, the production of the jars appeared to have altered in some regions. These results suggest that the affect of political situations on trade can vary, from only minor changes, to the complete exclusion of trade partners and the introduction of new trade contacts. However, the influence of lucrative trade networks on political developments was also illustrated. The utility of provenance studies of ceramics for understanding the complex relationship between trade and politics was confirmed.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Late Bronze Age Imports at Qantir: Petrographic and Contextual Analysis of Fabric Groups

    No full text
Late Bronze Age imported vessels have been found throughout Egypt during the New Kingdom. Their presence is a tangible testament to the international trade carried out throughout the eastern Mediterranean during this period. Those found at Piramesses/Qantir are particularly important as they represent what was acquired by the royal court in the Nineteenth Dynasty. A petrographic study aimed to clarify the origin of the LBA Canaanite jars and some other imports at Qantir based on a fabric classification system. Examining the prevalence of fabrics from two contexts at the site suggests those areas that were likely key exporters, but also indicates other minor producers may have been involved
