Why do financial markets asymmetrically smile? A simple formula in the multi-factor Heston model
A simple approach to determining the Gaussian kernel that constitutes the backbone of the multi-factor Heston model is proposed based on a suitable expansion in powers of volatilities of volatilities. This analysis provides Black-Scholes-like formulas for pricing European vanilla options, allowing for accurate approximations of the option prices under the multi-factor Heston model up to volatilities of volatilities on the order of 50%. The analysis also leads to a simple formula for the implied volatility showing that changes in the convexity of the volatility smile are due only to price skewness, and an easy formula to reproduce volatility indices via the realized volatility. Interestingly, the variance of the Gaussian kernel is equal to the variance of the continuously compounded return in the case of the Heston model. The empirical analyses presented assess the potential of our approach to capture market distortions while adequately forecasting the dynamics of the VIX index
Introduction: A Game\u27s Study Manifesto
In the epigraph to this collection, we return to a foundational text of the western literary canon, Homer’s Odyssey, and see in Penelope’s “bow contest” an illustrative moment in the history of game culture. Having fought in the Trojan War and having survived his ten-year trek home, the weary Odysseus cannot simply show up—the returning hero must rout the odious suitors whom Penelope has forestalled. In order to buy more time for vengeance, Odysseus disguises himself as an old beggar; in order to buy more time for deferral, Penelope creates an unwinnable game: she will marry the suitor able to string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through the handles of twelve axes.
We contend that this ludic scene from the Odyssey—an exemplar of literature, which is a constituent of Western culture—mirrors the ludic scene of digital games—exemplars of media, which are constituent of global culture.1 As a canonical text, the Odyssey clearly has an influence on subsequent texts, yet we know that contemporary texts will condition reception of the Odyssey just as surely as we saw and heard people on the Costa Concordia claim that their experience was like being in the movie Titanic instead of like being aboard the ship RMS Titanic
The Evolution of Blue Stragglers Formed Via Stellar Collisions
We have used the results of recent smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations
of colliding stars to create models appropriate for input into a stellar
evolution code. In evolving these models, we find that little or no surface
convection occurs, precluding angular momentum loss via a magnetically-driven
stellar wind as a viable mechanism for slowing rapidly rotating blue stragglers
which have been formed by collisions. Angular momentum transfer to either a
circumstellar disk (possibly collisional ejecta) or a nearby companion are
plausible mechanisms for explaining the observed low rotation velocities of
blue stragglers. Under the assumption that the blue stragglers seen in NGC 6397
and 47 Tuc have been created solely by collisions, we find that the majority of
these blue stragglers cannot have been highly mixed by convection or meridional
circulation currents at anytime during their evolution. Also, on the basis of
the agreement between the predictions of our non-rotating models and the
observed blue straggler distribution, the evolution of blue stragglers is
apparently not dominated by the effects of rotation.Comment: 36 pages, including 1 table and 7 postscript figures (LaTeX2e). Also

Improving Academic Learning and Success Through Transparency: A Student’s Perspective
Achieving higher levels of transparency of learning outcomes is a current challenge for many higher education institutions. This poster highlights Bridgewater State University’s Transparency Framework which was developed by a graduate student who believes that high transparency is possible and vital for student success. Barriers to achieving higher transparency are addressed
