In memory of Konrad von Hofmann, 1810-1877
Hofmann wanted to teach \u27the old truth in a new garb\u27. Taking seriously the rationalists\u27 impact on the orthodox view of scripture, he tried to verify Christian truth by appealing to a personal experience of regeneration. Divine revelation proceeded in a series of historical events Heilsgeschichte mediated to us through scripture, which bears earmarks, linguistic and cultural, of the times of its composition. he modified the orthodox view of the Atonement, saying that reconciliation was made not through Christ but rather in Christ. Because of the historical view of scripture, he took a keen interest in the unfolding of the eschatological drama at the end of time. Erlangen theology

Structure of giant nuclear molecules
Strong indirect evidence exists for the existence of attractive forces between nuclei making surface contact. Experimentally, the recent observations of spontaneous positron production in heavy-ion collisions can only be understood if nuclei stick together for times long compared to the collision time. We show that any such tendency for nuclei to attract implies the existence of nuclear molecules with entirely new kinds of collective modes. We present a simple model for these modes and apply it to 238U-238U
A stochastic multi-scale model of HIV-1 transmission for decision-making: application to a MSM population.
BackgroundIn the absence of an effective vaccine against HIV-1, the scientific community is presented with the challenge of developing alternative methods to curb its spread. Due to the complexity of the disease, however, our ability to predict the impact of various prevention and treatment strategies is limited. While ART has been widely accepted as the gold standard of modern care, its timing is debated.ObjectivesTo evaluate the impact of medical interventions at the level of individuals on the spread of infection across the whole population. Specifically, we investigate the impact of ART initiation timing on HIV-1 spread in an MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) population.Design and methodsA stochastic multi-scale model of HIV-1 transmission that integrates within a single framework the in-host cellular dynamics and their outcomes, patient health states, and sexual contact networks. The model captures disease state and progression within individuals, and allows for simulation of therapeutic strategies.ResultsEarly ART initiation may substantially affect disease spread through a population.ConclusionsOur model provides a multi-scale, systems-based approach to evaluate the broader implications of therapeutic strategies
Investigations and research in Nevada by the Water Resources Division, U. S. Geological Survey, 1982-83
The Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, is charged with (1) maintaining a hydrologic network in Nevada that provides information on the status of the State\u27s water resources and (2) engaging in technical water-resources investigations that have a high degree of transferability. To meet these broad objections, 26 projects were active in Nevada during fiscal year 1982 in cooperation with 36 Federal, State, and local agencies. Total funds were 741,500 and Federal funding (comprised of Geological Survey Federal and cooperative programs plus funds from six other Federal agencies) amounted to $2,577,955 for the fiscal year.Projects other than continuing programs for collection of hydrologic data included the following topics of study: geothermal resources, areal ground-water resources and ground-water modeling, waste disposal, prehistoric hydrology, acid mine drainage, the unsaturated zone, stream and reservoir sedimentation, river-quality modeling, flood hazards, and remote sensing in hydrology. For each project, the objectives, approach, progress in fiscal year 1982, and plans for fiscal year 1983 are described herein. A total of 26 reports and symposium abstracts were published or in press during fiscal year 1982 as an outgrowth of project work in the State
