An Attempt to Develop Resistance in the Udder Against Streptococcus Dysgalactiae and Escherichia Coli

The problem of mastitis in dairy animals has received much attention in recent years. As the business of dairying has developed and grown, mastitis has become more significant to the farmer and the processor. The economic loss from reduced production and sale of milk, loss of breeding animals, veterinary and medical fees is paramount. Much of the emphasis when dealing with mastitis has been on cure rather than prevention. Despite the extensive investigations of antibiotics and other chemo-therapeutic agents as a cure for mastitis, a completely satisfactory answer to the mastitis problem has not been found. Recent research has suggested that the mammary gland is capable of producing large amount of antibodies when a foreign protein is introduced into the udder. Since antibody production of the udder has been demonstrated, there is reason to suspect that the udder of the cow might be injected with an antigen and produce an immunity to bacterial invasion. Thus this investigation deals with an attempt to immunize cow’s udders with Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Escherichia coli

Crop Yield and Economic Analyses of Selected Multiple Pivot Irrigation Schemes

A project connected with the South Dakota University Agricultural Experiment Station was initiated in 1972 to evaluate alfalfa and corn yield response to a management scheme where a center pivot is used on more than one field. The project was to take place in the South Dakota climatic region and to include a limited soil moisture storage situation. In order to present the finding of the project and to evaluate the economics of such a scheme the following objectives of this study were established: 1. To develop production functions for corn and alfalfa that are applicable to South Dakota conditions and that can be used in irrigation analyses. 2 To make economic analyses of selected multiple field irrigation management schemes which utilize a center pivot irrigation machine on a shallow, droughty type soil

Effects of the Minimum Wage on U.S. Labor Markets

The first section of this research investigates the impacts of the minimum wage on regional labor markets in the United States. Using ten years of county-level data, we examine the relationship between the minimum wage and several key components of the labor market. Following past research, employment variables are used to measure labor supply, but—as an extension to the literature—job postings data are included to measure labor demand. Consistent with previous studies, we find a positive relationship between labor force participation and a county’s minimum wage. We do not find a statistically significant relationship between job postings and the minimum wage when using our full sample. Building on the work presented in Chapter 2, the third chapter of this thesis uses a labor market flow framework to explore the effects of minimum wage on job postings and the labor force when controlling for labor market supply and demand. Using an instrumental variable approach to address endogeneity, we do not find a significant relationship between minimum wage levels and the number of job postings. We do, however, observe a significant and positive relationship between the minimum wage level and the size of the labor force

Effects of the Minimum Wage on U.S. County Labor Markets

This study investigates the impacts of the minimum wage on U.S. regional labor markets. The empirical analysis uses panel data covering ten years and (most) U.S. counties to examine the relationship between the minimum wage and several key components of the labor market. Following past research, we use data on the number of people in the labor force to represent labor supply, but—as an extension to the literature—we use job postings data as a measure of labor demand. Consistent with previous studies, our findings show a positive relationship between the number of people in the labor force and a county’s minimum wage. The results, however, show that the relationship between job postings and the minimum wage is not statistically significant in the full-sample analysis of U.S. counties. Additional analyses also suggest that metropolitan and urban labor markets react differently to changes in the minimum wage when compared to their non-metropolitan and rural counterparts
