    Effect of cooking on arsenic concentration in rice

    This study assessed the effect of rinsing and boiling on total content of As (tAs) and of its inorganic and organic forms in different types of rice (polished and brown) from Spain and Ecuador. Rice was subjected to five different treatments. The results showed that the treatment consisting of three grain rinsing cycles followed by boiling in excess water showed a significant decrease in tAs content compared with raw rice. Regarding As species, it is worth noting that the different treatments significantly reduced the content of the most toxic forms of As.     A mathematically assisted reconstruction of the initial focus of the yellow fever outbreak in Buenos Aires (1871)

    We discuss the historic mortality record corresponding to the initial focus of the yellow fever epidemic outbreak registered in Buenos Aires during the year 1871 as compared to simulations of a stochastic population dynamics model. This model incorporates the biology of the urban vector of yellow fever, the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the stages of the disease in the human being as well as the spatial extension of the epidemic outbreak. After introducing the historical context and the restrictions it puts on initial conditions and ecological parameters, we discuss the general features of the simulation and the dependence on initial conditions and available sites for breeding the vector. We discuss the sensitivity, to the free parameters, of statistical estimators such as: final death toll, day of the year when the outbreak reached half the total mortality and the normalized daily mortality, showing some striking regularities. The model is precise and accurate enough to discuss the truthfulness of the presently accepted historic discussions of the epidemic causes, showing that there are more likely scenarios for the historic facts.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure

    The Effect of Distinct Geometric Semantic Crossover Operators in Regression Problems

    This paper investigates the impact of geometric semantic crossover operators in a wide range of symbolic regression problems. First, it analyses the impact of using Manhattan and Euclidean distance geometric semantic crossovers in the learning process. Then, it proposes two strategies to numerically optimize the crossover mask based on mathematical properties of these operators, instead of simply generating them randomly. An experimental analysis comparing geometric semantic crossovers using Euclidean and Manhattan distances and the proposed strategies is performed in a test bed of twenty datasets. The results show that the use of different distance functions in the semantic geometric crossover has little impact on the test error, and that our optimized crossover masks yield slightly better results. For SGP practitioners, we suggest the use of the semantic crossover based on the Euclidean distance, as it achieved similar results to those obtained by more complex operators

    Emission Quenching in Tetraphenylfuran Crystal: Why This Propeller-Shaped Molecule Does Not Emit in the Condensed Phase

    Due to their substantial fluorescence quantum yields in the crystalline phase, propeller-shaped molecules have recently gained significant attention as potential emissive materials for optoelectronic applications. For the family of cyclopentadiene derivatives, light-emission is highly dependent on the nature of heteroatomic substitutions. In this paper, we investigate excited state relaxation pathways in the tetraphenyl-furan molecule (TPF), which in contrast with other molecules in the family, shows emission quenching in the solid-state. For the singlet manifold, our calculations show nonradiative pathways associated with C-O elongation are blocked in both vacuum and the solid state. A fraction of the population can be transferred to the triplet manifold and, subsequently, to the ground state in both phases. This process is expected to be relatively slow due to the small spin-orbit couplings between the relevant singlet-triplet states. Emission quenching in crystalline TPF seems to be in line with more efficient exciton hopping rates. Our simulations help clarify the role of conical intersections, population of the triplet states and crystalline structure in the emissive response of propeller-shaped molecules

    Arsenic in rice agrosystems (water, soil and rice plants) in Guayas and Los Rios provinces, Ecuador

    Geogenic arsenic (As) can accumulate and reach high concentrations in rice grains, thus representing a potential threat to human health. Ecuador is one of the main consumers of rice in South America. However, there is no information available about the concentrations of As in rice agrosystems, although some water bodies are known to contain high levels of the element. We carried out extensive sampling of water, soil, rice plants and commercial rice (obtained from local markets). Water samples were analysed to determine physico-chemical properties and concentrations of dissolved arsenic. Soil samples were analysed to determine total organic C, texture, total Fe and amorphous Fe oxyhydroxides (Fe-ox), total arsenic (tAs) and the bioavailable fraction (As-Me). The different plant parts were analysed separately to determine total (tAs), inorganic (iAs) and organic arsenic (oAs). Low concentrations of arsenic were found in samples of water (generally 80%) in all parts of the rice plants. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Role of Conical Intersections on the Efficiency of Fluorescent Organic Molecular Crystals

    Organic molecular crystals are attractive materials for luminescent applications because of their promised tunability. However, the link between the chemical structure and emissive behavior is poorly understood because of the numerous interconnected factors which are at play in determining radiative and nonradiative behaviors at the solid-state level. In particular, the decay through conical intersection dominates the nonadiabatic regions of the potential energy surface, and thus, their accessibility is a telling indicator of the luminosity of the material. In this study, we investigate the radiative mechanism for five organic molecular crystals which display a solid-state emission, with a focus on the role of conical intersections in their photomechanisms. The objective is to situate the importance of the accessibility of conical intersections with regards to emissive behavior, taking into account other nonradiative decay channels, namely, vibrational decay, and exciton hopping. We begin by giving a brief overview of the structural patterns of the five systems within a larger pool of 13 crystals for a richer comparison. We observe that because of the prevalence of sheet like and herringbone packing in organic molecular crystals, the conformational diversity of crystal dimers is limited. Additionally, similarly spaced dimers have exciton coupling values of a similar order within a 50 meV interval. Next, we focus on three exemplary cases, where we disentangle the role of nonradiative decay mechanisms and show how rotational minimum energy conical intersections in vacuum lead to puckered ones in the crystal, increasing their instability upon crystallization in typical packing motifs. In contrast, molecules with puckered conical intersections in vacuum tend to conserve this trait upon crystallization, and therefore, their quantum yield of fluorescence is determined predominantly by other nonradiative decay mechanisms

Dado ésto, las experiencias musicales han sido concebidas para las personas oyentes y no para las personas sordas, quizás porque resulta desconcertante tan siquiera imaginar como una persona que no puede escuchar el sonido pueda vivenciarlas de una forma genuina y diferente. Lo que se pretende en este escrito es sostener que la música va más allá de la sensación que se percibe en el oído y que es definida como sonido, razón por la cual la sordera no se constituye en un impedimento para poder percibirla
