Transient Multi-scale Computational Fluid Dynamics (cfd) Model For Thrombus Tracking In An Assit Device Vascular Bed

Heart failure occurs when the heart is not capable to pump blood at a sufficient rate to meet the demands of the body. Depending on the health of the heart, doctors may recommend a heart transplant, but finding a suitable donor is often a long duration process and the patient might be at an advance condition or the patient is not adequate for a heart transplant. In such cases Ventricular assist devices (VAD) are implemented. The purpose of a VAD is to aid the heart to pump the correct amount of blood, by doing so it relives the load that is put on the heart while giving the patient a chance for recovery. This study focuses on observing the hemodynamic effects of implementing a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) along the aortic arch and main arteries. Thrombi creation and transportation is other subject included in the study, due to the fact that thrombi can obstruct blood flow to critical arteries, manly carotid and vertebral. Occlusion of these can lead to a stroke with devastating effects on the neurocognitive functions and even death. A multi-scale CFD analysis a patient specific geometry model is used as well as a lumped system which provides the correct conditions in order to simulate the whole cardiovascular system. The main goal of the study is to understand the difference in flow behavior created by the unsteady pulsatile boundary conditions. The model described in this work has a total cardiac output of 7.0 Liters/ minute, this for a healthy heart. Two cardiac output splits are used to simulate heart failure conditions. The first split consists of 5 Liters/minute flowing through the LVAD cannula and 2 Liters/minute via the aortic root. The second scenario is when heart iv failure is critical, meaning that zero flow is being output by the left ventricle, thus a split of 7 Liter/minute trough the LVAD cannula and 0 Liters/minute traveling through the aortic root. A statistical analysis for the thrombi motion throughout the patient aortic arch was performed in order to quantify the influence that pulsatile flow has on the particles being track. Spherical particles of 2mm, 4mm and 5mm were released and accounted in the statistical analysis for each of the two split configurations. The study focuses on particles that escaped on the outlet boundaries of the upper arteries (Right Carotid, Left Carotid, and Vertebral). Results exhibit the statistical comparison of means for each particle diameter as well as for the overall probability for the steady and unsteady flow condition

Evaluación del Bioinsumo de Fique Pulverizado (Furcraea spp) para el Control in vitro de Phytophthora infestans en papa (Solanum tuberosum L)

The objective of this research was evaluating the antifungal activity of spray-dried Fique (Furcraea spp) for in vitro control of Phytophthora infestans in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L). The optimal drying process variables studied were the entry temperature and air velocity of 140 °C and 60 m/s. The product obtained was amended in an agar medium tomato which was placed in petri containers, inoculated with 1.2 cm in diameter of pathogens discs. The optimum treatment inhibited 100% growth of the pathogen. Also, a reduction of water activity of 37.4% was achieved. This allowed increasing its preservation. The results showed that the technique is highly favorable for the conservation of bio-products of fungal properties

Creación de empresa fundación "IO" inteligencia organizacional

El proyecto de creación de la Fundación Inteligencia Organizacional (Fundación IO), está pensado como entidad sin ánimo de lucro, fundamentado en filosofías de valor compartido, teoría del cambio y principios de organizaciones B (B corp.). este tipo de organizaciones combinan los fines sociales de una ONG, con la eficiencia económica de una entidad con ánimo de lucro, definiendo el modelo de negocio en pro de dar soluciones a problemáticas sociales. Estas problemáticas sociales necesitan generar transformaciones, las cuales son promovidas por acciones basadas en la teoría del cambio, donde los esfuerzos y recursos de una organización se focalizan en una comunidad, estas acciones generan reacciones y estas se multiplican, incrementando los esfuerzos que permiten impactar a múltiples necesidades del entorno psicosocial (Brugmann & Prahalad, 2007). Varias organizaciones han definido su propuesta de valor, misión y éxito económico, usando la fuerza del mercado para dar solución a problemas sociales, económicos y ambientales, a septiembre de 2016 existen 1188 organizaciones certificadas como empresas B a nivel mundial, de las cuales 256 son latinoamericanas (Sistema B, s.f.). Electrical manipulation of spin states in a single electrostatically gated transition-metal complex

We demonstrate an electrically controlled high-spin (S=5/2) to low-spin (S=1/2) transition in a three-terminal device incorporating a single Mn2+ ion coordinated by two terpyridine ligands. By adjusting the gate-voltage we reduce the terpyridine moiety and thereby strengthen the ligand-field on the Mn-atom. Adding a single electron thus stabilizes the low-spin configuration and the corresponding sequential tunnelling current is suppressed by spin-blockade. From low-temperature inelastic cotunneling spectroscopy, we infer the magnetic excitation spectrum of the molecule and uncover also a strongly gate-dependent singlet-triplet splitting on the low-spin side. The measured bias-spectroscopy is shown to be consistent with an exact diagonalization of the Mn-complex, and an interpretation of the data is given in terms of a simplified effective model.Comment: Will appear soon in Nanoletter
