Anisotropic low field behavior and the observation of flux jumps in CeCoIn5
The magnetic behavior of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 has been
investigated. The low field magnetization data show flux jumps in the mixed
state of the superconducting phase in a restricted range of temperature. These
flux jumps begin to disappear below 1.7 K, and are completely absent at 1.5 K.
The magnetization loops are asymmetric, suggesting that surface and geometrical
factors dominate the pinning in this system. The lower critical field (Hc1),
obtained from the magnetization data, shows a linear temperature dependence and
is anisotropic. The calculated penetration depth is also anisotropic, which is
consistent with the observation of an anisotropic superconducting gap in
CeCoIn5. The critical currents, determined from the high field isothermal
magnetization loops, are comparatively low (around 4000 A/cm2 at 1.6 K and 5
kOe).Comment: 4 pages 3 figure
Educational change in Scotland: Policy, context and biography
The poor success rate of policy for curriculum change has been widely noted in the educational change literature. Part of the problem lies in the complexity of schools, as policymakers have proven unable to micromanage the multifarious range of factors that impact upon the implementation of policy. This paper draws upon empirical data from a local authority-led initiative to implement Scotland’s new national curriculum. It offers a set of conceptual tools derived from critical realism (particularly the work of Margaret Archer), which offer significant potential in allowing us to develop greater understanding of the complexities of educational change. Archer’s social theory developed as a means of explaining change and continuity in social settings. As schools and other educational institutions are complex social organisations, critical realism offers us epistemological tools for tracking the ebbs and flows of change cycles over time, presenting the means for mapping the multifarious networks and assemblages that form their basis
Dirac-Born-Infeld Action on the Tachyon Kink and Vortex
The tachyon effective field theory describing the dynamics of a non-BPS
D-brane in superstring theory has an infinitely thin but finite tension kink
solution describing a codimension one BPS D-brane. We study the world-volume
theory of massless modes on the kink, and show that the world volume action has
precisely the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) form without any higher derivative
corrections. We generalize this to a vortex solution in the effective field
theory on a brane-antibrane pair. As in the case of the kink, the vortex is
infinitely thin, has finite energy density, and the world-volume action on the
vortex is again given exactly by the DBI action on a BPS D-brane. We also
discuss the coupling of fermions and restoration of supersymmetry and
-symmetry on the world-volume of the kink. Absence of higher derivative
corrections to the DBI action on the soliton implies that all such corrections
are related to higher derivative corrections to the original effective action
on the world-volume of a non-BPS D-brane or brane-antibrane pair.Comment: LaTeX file, 34 pages; references and other minor comments adde
FERMION ZERO MODES AND BLACK-HOLE HYPERMULTIPLETS WITH RIGID SUPERSYMMETRY
The gravitini zero modes riding on top of the extreme Reissner-Nordstrom
black-hole solution of N=2 supergravity are shown to be normalizable. The
gravitini and dilatini zero modes of axion-dilaton extreme black-hole solutions
of N=4 supergravity are also given and found to have finite norms. These norms
are duality invariant. The finiteness and positivity of the norms in both cases
are found to be correlated with the Witten-Israel-Nester construction; however,
we have replaced the Witten condition by the pure-spin-3/2 constraint on the
gravitini. We compare our calculation of the norms with the calculations which
provide the moduli space metric for extreme black holes.
The action of the N=2 hypermultiplet with an off-shell central charge
describes the solitons of N=2 supergravity. This action, in the
Majumdar-Papapetrou multi-black-hole background, is shown to be N=2 rigidly
supersymmetric.Comment: 18 pages, LaTe
Zero Modes and the Atiyah-Singer Index in Noncommutative Instantons
We study the bosonic and fermionic zero modes in noncommutative instanton
backgrounds based on the ADHM construction. In k instanton background in U(N)
gauge theory, we show how to explicitly construct 4Nk (2Nk) bosonic (fermionic)
zero modes in the adjoint representation and 2k (k) bosonic (fermionic) zero
modes in the fundamental representation from the ADHM construction. The number
of fermionic zero modes is also shown to be exactly equal to the Atiyah-Singer
index of the Dirac operator in the noncommutative instanton background. We
point out that (super)conformal zero modes in non-BPS instantons are affected
by the noncommutativity. The role of Lorentz symmetry breaking by the
noncommutativity is also briefly discussed to figure out the structure of U(1)
instantons.Comment: v3: 24 pages, Latex, corrected typos, references added, to appear in

The decay pi0 to gamma gamma to next to leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory
The two photon decay width of the neutral pion is analyzed within the
combined framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory and the 1/Nc expansion up to
order p^6 and p^4 times 1/Nc in the decay amplitude. The eta' is explicitly
included in the analysis. It is found that the decay width is enhanced by about
4.5% due to the isospin-breaking induced mixing of the pure U(3) states. This
effect, which is of leading order in the low energy expansion, is shown to
persist nearly unchanged at next to leading order. The chief prediction for the
width with its estimated uncertainty is 8.10+-0.08 eV. This prediction at the
1% level makes the upcomming precision measurement of the decay width even more
urgent.
Observations on the eta and eta' can also be made, especially about their
mixing, which is shown to be significantly affected by next to leading order
corrections.Comment: 21 pages, two figure
Levels and equivalence in credit and qualifications frameworks: Contrasting the prescribed and enacted curriculum in school and college
Drawing on data from an empirical study of three matched subjects in upper secondary school and further education college in Scotland, this article explores some of the factors that result in differences emerging from the translation of the prescribed curriculum into the enacted curriculum. We argue that these differences raise important questions about equivalences which are being promoted through the development of credit and qualifications frameworks. The article suggests that the standardisation associated with the development of a rational credit and qualifications framework and an outcomes-based prescribed curriculum cannot be achieved precisely because of the multiplicity that emerges from the practices of translation
Decoherence and CPT Violation in a Stringy Model of Space-Time Foam
I discuss a model inspired from the string/brane framework, in which our
Universe is represented as a three brane, propagating in a bulk space time
punctured by D0-brane (D-particle) defects. As the D3-brane world moves in the
bulk, the D-particles cross it, and from an effective observer on D3 the
situation looks like a ``space-time foam'' with the defects ``flashing'' on and
off (``D-particle foam''). The open strings, with their ends attached on the
brane, which represent matter in this scenario, can interact with the
D-particles on the D3-brane universe in a topologically non-trivial manner,
involving splitting and capture of the strings by the D0-brane defects. Such
processes are described by logarithmic conformal field theories on the
world-sheet. Physically, they result in effective decoherence of the string
matter on the D3 brane, and as a result, of CPT Violation, but of a type that
implies an ill-defined nature of the effective CPT operator. Due to electric
charge conservation, only electrically neutral (string) matter can exhibit such
interactions with the D-particle foam. This may have unique, experimentally
detectable, consequences for electrically-neutral entangled quantum matter
states on the brane world, in particular the modification of the pertinent EPR

Electromagnetic corrections in eta --> 3 pi decays
We re-evaluate the electromagnetic corrections to eta --> 3 pi decays at
next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, arguing that effects of order
e^2(m_u-m_d) disregarded so far are not negligible compared to other
contributions of order e^2 times a light quark mass. Despite the appearance of
the Coulomb pole in eta --> pi+ pi- pi0 and cusps in eta --> 3 pi0, the overall
corrections remain small.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures; references updated, version published in EPJ
Case Report: Rare IKZF1 Gene Fusions Identified in Neonate with Congenital KMT2A-Rearranged Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Published: 19 January 2023Chromosomal rearrangements involving the KMT2A gene occur frequently in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). KMT2A-rearranged ALL (KMT2Ar ALL) has poor long-term survival rates and is the most common ALL subtype in infants less than 1 year of age. KMT2Ar ALL frequently occurs with additional chromosomal abnormalities including disruption of the IKZF1 gene, usually by exon deletion. Typically, KMT2Ar ALL in infants is accompanied by a limited number of cooperative le-sions. Here we report a case of aggressive infant KMT2Ar ALL harbouring additional rare IKZF1 gene fusions. Comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses were performed on sequential samples. This report highlights the genomic complexity of this particular disease and describes the novel gene fusions IKZF1::TUT1 and KDM2A::IKZF1.Laura N. Eadie, Jacqueline A. Rehn, James Breen, Michael P.
