    Multi-Purpose Cyber Environment for Maritime Sector

    The cyber attack surface in a maritime environment is constantly growing. More current information and computer technologies are being used on cargo and passenger ships to save on operational costs and increase navigational safety. Along with the growing reliance on automation, the risk of a disruption to a vessel's critical systems by drawing on the wrong inputs from sensors to change the behaviour of the actuators has significantly increased. Traditional operational technological systems are much more complicated to update than the automatic software updates we see in information technology systems. To better understand existing cyber threats in the maritime sector and increase cybersecurity resilience, this paper aims to replicate the digital components of a ship's bridge to examine scenarios when the bridge system loses connectivity, receives the wrong inputs from sensors, or the internal system becomes compromised. The simulator differentiates fundamentally from traditional simulators or digital twins in the maritime sector that focus on training seafarers. This environment generates data streams that are similar to those on board a ship. Those data streams can be analysed, modified and spoofed to observe the effects. The effects can be technical but it is equally necessary to analyse how human beings would react in specific circumstances. Our work provides the opportunity to isolate the ship network traffic, conduct penetration testing, find cybersecurity vulnerabilities on devices, and execute cyber attacks without the dangers associated with running such scenarios on a vessel in the open sea.</jats:p

    The rationale of opportunistic bilateral salpingectomies (OBS) during benign gynaecological and obstetric surgery : a consensus text of the Flemish Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (VVOG)

    Ovarian cancer (OC), is a disease difficult to diagnose in an early stage implicating a poor prognosis. The 5-year overall survival in Belgium has not changed in the last 18 years and remains 44 %. There is no effective screening method (secondary prevention) to detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. Primary prevention of ovarian cancer came in the picture through the paradigm shift that the fallopian tube is often the origin of ovarian cancer and not the ovary itself. Opportunistic bilateral salpingectomy (OBS) during benign gynaecological and obstetric surgery might have the potential to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by as much as 65 %. Bilateral risk-reducing salpingectomy during a benign procedure is feasible, safe, appears to have no impact on the ovarian function and seems to be cost effective. The key question is whether we should wait for a RCT or implement OBS directly in our daily practice. Guidelines regarding OBS within our societies are therefore urgently needed. Our recommendation is to inform all women without a child wish, undergoing a benign gynaecological or obstetrical surgical procedure about the pro’s and the con’s of OBS and advise a bilateral salpingectomy.     Antibiotic prophylaxis in TURP: a prospective analysis concerning antibiotic stewardship and a potential reduction of antibiotic use in TURP

    PURPOSE: Antibiotic prophylaxis is standard procedure in transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). We evaluated the necessity of antibiotic (AB) prophylaxis in TURP due to increasing microbial antibiotic resistance. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of 506 patients. Only patients with a pre-operative catheter/pyuria received AB-prophylaxis. Urine analysis (pre-operative, at discharge, and 3 week post-operative) was performed next to an analysis of the blood culture/irrigation fluid and of the resected prostatic tissue. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: 67/506 (13.2%) patients received prophylactic antibiotics. 56/67 (83.5%) patients had a pre-operative catheter and 11/67 (16.4%) had pre-operative pyuria in which a fluoroquinolone-resistance (FQ-R) rate of 69.2% in Escherichia coli (EC) was observed. Clinical infectious symptoms were present in 13/439 (2.9%) patients without antibiotic prophylaxis; 12/439 (2.7%) patients had uncomplicated fever ( 38.5°) observed. Uncomplicated fever developed in 7/67 (10.4%) patients who did receive AB-prophylaxis. FQ-R was observed in 60% of the positive urine cultures at discharge and in 53.8% 3 week post-operatively. CONCLUSIONS: Our data show a low infectious complication rate (2.9%) in patients without a pre-operative catheter or pyuria,undergoing TURP without AB-prophylaxis. These findings might question the current use of AB prophylaxis in TURP in patients without a pre-operative catheter or pyuria, in times of antibiotic stewardship due to the high rate of microbial-resistance in our population.status: publishe

    Typing of the EPS coat of Erwinia amylovora strains in relation to their phytopathological properties

    The structure and the production of the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) coat of different E. amylovora isolates were investigated. Mass spectrometry and NMR analysis according to Nimtz et al. (1996) elucidated a different structure in the amylovoran of E. amylovora pathogens on Malaceae and on Rubus host plants. Tests with the E. amylovora pathogens on Malaceae showed a direct correlation between the amount of EPS produced and the aggressiveness of the strains

    Influence of amylovoran production on virulence of Erwinia amylovora and a different amylovoran structure in E-amylovora isolates from Rubus

    The amylovoran structures of five Erwinia amylovora isolates from Malaceae sp. and four isolates from Rubus sp. host plants were fully established, mainly by NMR. The structural data on one E. amylovora isolate from a Malaceae sp. host, which had been previously suggested by mass and NMR (Nimtz et al., 1996), were completed. E. amylovora strains infective on Malaceae sp. host plants had an amylovoran composed of pentasaccharide and 30-40% hexasaccharide repeating-substructures, whereas amylovoran from E. amylovora isolates from Rubus sp. host plants had only the pentasaccharide substructures. On the other hand, the exopolysaccharide (EPS) production differed in wild-type E. amylovora strains. Data on in vitro amylovoran production per cell could account for the differences in aggressiveness found in E. amylovora strains, as deduced from a pilot test with highly, moderately, and weakly aggressive strains. This correlation was confirmed with several other wild-type E. amylovora strains from different origin.status: publishe
