Constructing College-Level Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) MinorsâMoving from Performative to Transformative DEI
In a period of growing support as well as hostility toward, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the United States, we developed two college-level DEI minors. We grounded each minor in critical pedagogy, a broad theoretical and philosophical perspective on the purpose and process of education that encapsulates a variety of practices and methods. The goal was to move beyond performative DEI by collaborating with students to develop the necessary tools to become engaged and self-managed citizens both nationally and globally. As such, we embedded dialogue, self-reflection, diverse knowledge networks and sources, and critical frameworks into the minors, as we sought to balance developing critical awareness with working toward change. In the following paper, we describe these basic elements of critical pedagogy to transformative DEI and link them to the processes of constructing and ultimately delivering the minors. Key examples are provided to demonstrate the implementation of these elements in our work. We conclude with our reflections on how this experience may inform similar efforts
A political ecology of green territorialization: frontier expansion and conservation in the Colombian Amazon
After decades of civil war, the Colombian government has recently declared the Amazon as a model region for green growth and low carbon development. The Amazon Vision programme, launched by the Colombian government in 2016, seeks to contribute to forest conservation, climate mitigation, poverty reduction and peace building. The Amazon Vision fundamentally reframes the Colombian Amazon from a ânarco frontierâ that needs to be liberated from guerrilla influence, organized crime and peasants destroying forests for coca cultivation, to a net CO2 sink with enormous potential for green growth and poverty reduction. Drawing on historical and empirical qualitative research in Guaviare and complemented by a quantitative land cover classification, this article builds on the concept of âgreen territorialityâ to investigate the extent to which the shift towards conservation affects property rights and the ability of indigenous groups and peasants to access land and natural resources. We illustrate how the reframing of peasants from protagonists of development and frontier expansion to villains, and of indigenous communities from underdeveloped forest dwellers to environmental guardians, has created land conflicts and affected the legitimacy of their respective property rights. In both cases, the Amazon Vision strengthens conservation policies and challenges existing land rights but also creates new windows of opportunity for the land claims of indigenous communities while reinforcing conceptualizations of social differentiation among dwellers of the Amazon
A global transcriptional network connecting noncoding mutations to changes in tumor gene expression.
Although cancer genomes are replete with noncoding mutations, the effects of these mutations remain poorly characterized. Here we perform an integrative analysis of 930 tumor whole genomes and matched transcriptomes, identifying a network of 193 noncoding loci in which mutations disrupt target gene expression. These 'somatic eQTLs' (expression quantitative trait loci) are frequently mutated in specific cancer tissues, and the majority can be validated in an independent cohort of 3,382 tumors. Among these, we find that the effects of noncoding mutations on DAAM1, MTG2 and HYI transcription are recapitulated in multiple cancer cell lines and that increasing DAAM1 expression leads to invasive cell migration. Collectively, the noncoding loci converge on a set of core pathways, permitting a classification of tumors into pathway-based subtypes. The somatic eQTL network is disrupted in 88% of tumors, suggesting widespread impact of noncoding mutations in cancer
Cluster headache: an update on clinical features, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment
Cluster headache (CH) is one of the worst primary headaches that remain underdiagnosed and inappropriately treated. There are recent advances in the understanding of this disease and available treatments. This paper aims to review CH's recent clinical and pathophysiological findings, diagnosis, and treatment. We performed a narrative literature review on the socio-demographics, clinical presentations, pathophysiological findings, and diagnosis and treatment of CH. CH affects 0.1% of the population with an incidence of 2.07â9.8/100,00 person-years-habitants, a mean prevalence of 53/100,000 inhabitants (3â150/100,000 inhabitants). The male-to-female ratio remains inconclusive, as the ratio of 4.3:1 has recently been modified to 1.3â2.6, possibly due to previous misdiagnosis in women. Episodic presentation is the most frequent (80%). It is a polygenetic and multifactorial entity that involves dysfunction of the trigeminovascular system, the trigeminal autonomic reflex, and the hypothalamic networks. An MRI of the brain is mandatory to exclude secondary etiologies. There are effective and safe pharmacological treatments oxygen, sphenopalatine, and great occipital nerve block, with the heterogeneity of clinical trial designs for patients with CH divided into acute, transitional, or bridge treatment (prednisone) and preventive interventions. In conclusion, CH remains underdiagnosed, mainly due to a lack of awareness within the medical community, frequently causing a long delay in reaching a final diagnosis. Recent advances in understanding the principal risk factors and underlying pathophysiology exist. There are new therapeutic possibilities that are effective for CH. Indeed, a better understanding of this challenging pathology will continue to be a subject of research, study, and discoveries in its diagnostic and therapeutic approach
The Research Journey as a Challenge Towards New Trends
The academic community of the department of Risaralda, in its permanent interest in evidencing the results of the research processes that are carried out from the Higher Education Institutions and as a product of the VI meeting of researchers of the department of Risaralda held in November 2021 presents its work: âThe journey of research as a challenge towards new trendsâ, which reflects the result of the latest research and advances in different lines of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology and Information Sciences, which seek to solve and meet the demands of the different sectors.

Omecamtiv mecarbil in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, GALACTICâHF: baseline characteristics and comparison with contemporary clinical trials
Aims:
The safety and efficacy of the novel selective cardiac myosin activator, omecamtiv mecarbil, in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is tested in the Global Approach to Lowering Adverse Cardiac outcomes Through Improving Contractility in Heart Failure (GALACTICâHF) trial. Here we describe the baseline characteristics of participants in GALACTICâHF and how these compare with other contemporary trials.
Methods and Results:
Adults with established HFrEF, New York Heart Association functional class (NYHA)ââ„âII, EF â€35%, elevated natriuretic peptides and either current hospitalization for HF or history of hospitalization/ emergency department visit for HF within a year were randomized to either placebo or omecamtiv mecarbil (pharmacokineticâguided dosing: 25, 37.5 or 50âmg bid). 8256 patients [male (79%), nonâwhite (22%), mean age 65âyears] were enrolled with a mean EF 27%, ischemic etiology in 54%, NYHA II 53% and III/IV 47%, and median NTâproBNP 1971âpg/mL. HF therapies at baseline were among the most effectively employed in contemporary HF trials. GALACTICâHF randomized patients representative of recent HF registries and trials with substantial numbers of patients also having characteristics understudied in previous trials including more from North America (n = 1386), enrolled as inpatients (n = 2084), systolic blood pressureâ<â100âmmHg (n = 1127), estimated glomerular filtration rate <â30âmL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 528), and treated with sacubitrilâvalsartan at baseline (n = 1594).
Conclusions:
GALACTICâHF enrolled a wellâtreated, highârisk population from both inpatient and outpatient settings, which will provide a definitive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this novel therapy, as well as informing its potential future implementation

Context dependence of cancer cell migration and metastasis
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. During metastasis, cells from a primary tumor escape, invade local tissues and spread to distant organs. Even though this process represents the highest risk for cancer related death, a lot remains unknown about the principles behind its beginning and progression. The main barrier that cancer cells face at each step of the metastatic process is a complex 3D extracellular matrix (ECM), which they need to bind to, pull on and degrade. In this dissertation I use 3D culture systems to mimic a native 3D ECM in vitro, to quantitatively study the role of the ECM structure and physical properties on the development of invasive phenotypes and gene expression programs.In chapter 1, I identified a switch to a highly persistent and polarized cell motility in a high density environment and discovered that cells undergoing this migration formed multicellular structures. Using RNA sequencing I found an upregulated 70 gene module that together with the motility response has been describes as vasculogenic mimicry (VM). I show evidence that the identified transcriptional program predicts survival in patient data across nine distinct tumor types, suggesting it may represent a conserved metastatic response.In chapter 2, I investigate the biophysical mechanisms of cell-ECM interactions. I find that matrices with low degradability limit cell adhesion. Cells in these matrices display hallmarks of anchorage independent growth, including oxidative stress. They show decreased expression of several mTOR target genes and downregulation of TCA cycle and pyruvate metabolism pathways. Lastly, I show that as part of the response to low adhesion state, cells upregulate key NOTCH signaling molecules.In chapter 3, I propose the use of in vivo models to deconstruct the role of collagen density in promoting cancer cell metastasis. I present preliminary data and future directions for these in vivo models.The data presented in this dissertation provides a multiscale view of the role of the collagen microenvironment in the development of cancer cell invasive motility and metastatic phenotypes. The discoveries presented hereby highlight the value of using 3D culture assays in combination with quantitative analysis to uncover biological phenomenon with high translational potential

Geography of Service Delivery: On the Role of Mental Health Service Structure in Community Senior Services for Puerto Rican Older Adults
199 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009.The main purpose of this study was to examine the role of mental health services structure in community senior centers and how it interacts with Puerto Rican older adults' historical, social, and cultural experiences to relate to their perceptions, awareness, and utilization of mental health services. The study was carried out within a concurrent confirmatory mixed methods design that combined quantitative and qualitative components. The main results indicate that an integrated mental health services structure is associated with positive perceptions of mental illness and mental health services. Regression analyses indicate that mental health services structure may increase awareness about mental health services and how to access them with migration history, current mental illness symptoms, mental health history, age, and income as predictors. Further, mental health service utilization may also be facilitated with the implementation of an integrated structure of mental health services and a targeted approach with age, migration, mental health history, and marital status as predictors. Further research is needed to solidify the results in this study.
