Engaging Faculty and Reducing Costs by Leveraging Collections: A Pilot Project to Reduce Course Pack Use

INTRODUCTION Academic libraries have the privilege of serving many roles in the lives of their institutions. One role that is largely untapped is their ability to actively leverage their collections to support faculty teaching and to reduce student out-of-pocket costs by eliminating systemic double payment for course materials. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM/SERVICE This paper details a project by the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office (SCCO) at the University of Toronto that aimed to reduce this systemic double payment by leveraging collections and electronic reserves to provide a new service, the Zero-to-Low Cost Courses. Building on existing relationships with faculty, SCCO staff reached out to potential candidates, identified library licensed materials in their printed course packs, and created digital course packs which students could use at no cost. NEXT STEPS This article shares the results of the project and explores next steps in using existing library resources to actively reduce student course costs

10% or 6 Factors? Looking beyond the Numbers in Educational Fair Dealing Guidelines

Fair dealing policies at educational institutions have been the subject of much controversy.  But no one understands them better than the individuals whose job it is to interpret, explain and apply them on a daily basis.  In this session, copyright specialists from three Ontario universities, take a deep dive into the different guidelines in place at their respective institutions.  Using illustrative examples of some of the more complex fair dealing analyses they’ve been involved in, the presenters will demonstrate how sound fair dealing policy can enable nuanced fair dealing assessments that focus more on fairness than formulas. Stephanie Orfano is from the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office at the University of Toronto Libraries. Stephanie collaborates with faculty, staff and students on issues related to publishing, copyright, licensing and permissions, and the many paths to open scholarship. Ann Ludbrook is the Ryerson University Library Copyright and Scholarly Engagement Librarian and also manages the One Stop Course Reading Service – E-Reserves at Ryerson. She is also does outreach and project support in the areas of Open Education and Scholarly Communication. Heather Martin is the Copyright Officer at the University of Guelph, and also manages the Library’s E-Learning and Reserves Services team.  Her latest project is chairing the University of Guelph’s task force on Accessible and Affordable Course Content and Open Educational Resources

Fast emitting nanocomposites for high-resolution ToF-PET imaging based on multicomponent scintillators

Time-of-Flight Positron Emission Tomography is a medical imaging technique, based on the detection of two back-to-back {\gamma}-photons generated from radiotracers injected in the body. Its limit is the ability of employed scintillation detectors to discriminate in time the arrival of {\gamma}-pairs, i.e. the coincidence time resolution (CTR). A CTR < 50 ps that would enable fast imaging with ultralow radiotracer dose. Monolithic materials do not have simultaneously the required high light output and fast emission characteristics, thus the concept of scintillating heterostructure is proposed, where the device is made of a dense scintillator coupled to a fast-emitting light material. Here we present a composite polymeric scintillator, whose density has been increased upon addition of hafnium oxide nanoparticles. This enhanced by +300% its scintillation yield, surpassing commercial plastic scintillators. The nanocomposite is coupled to bismuth germanate oxide (BGO) realizing a multilayer scintillator. We observed the energy sharing between its components, which activate the nanocomposite fast emission enabling a net CTR improvement of 25% with respect to monolithic BGO. These results demonstrate that a controlled loading with dense nanomaterials is an excellent strategy to enhance the performance of polymeric scintillators for their use in advanced radiation detection and imaging technologies

Il bagitto (giudeo-livornese) dalle origini alla parlata attuale: un'inchiesta sul campo con 72 informatori

L’inchiesta linguistica sul campo alla base del presente lavoro è costituita da due campagne: la prima si è svolta dal 15 settembre 2006 al 30 luglio 2007, attraverso interviste audio-registrate che hanno coinvolto 16 informatori; la seconda dal 7 gennaio 2012 al 30 settembre 2015, attraverso interviste videoregistrate che hanno coinvolto 72 informatori (alcuni dei quali già intervistati in precedenza). Sia i materiali sonori e visivi raccolti, disponibili per ulteriori indagini del candidato o di altri studiosi, sia il loro ordinamento e le relative analisi presentano un notevole interesse. In proposito si tenga presente che al 2006 gli iscritti alla comunità ebraica di Livorno erano circa 700, per cui il numero degli interrogati corrisponde a circa un decimo. Il campione rimane molto cospicuo, se non rappresentativo in termini tecnicamente statistici, pur se si considera che la tradizione ebraica livornese va oltre gli iscritti alla Keillà e che il detto campione include anche a) parlanti ebrei appartenenti a famiglie in vario modo legate a Livorno ma residenti altrove in Italia e all’estero (Israele, Tunisia, Stati Uniti, ecc.); b) parlanti non ebrei ma impegnati (o di famiglia impegnata) in attività commerciali insieme con ebrei. Questa composizione del campione riflette dinamiche sociali, culturali e linguistiche proprie della comunità indagata, che storicamente ha operato in contesti transnazionali e in un rapporto non discriminato né discriminatorio (entro certi limiti) rispetto alla società circostante. La prima parte del lavoro è dedicata a un profilo storico-linguistico della comunità ebraica di Livorno e alla questione della genesi e della evoluzione del giudeo-livornese, tradizionalmente identificato come bagito o bagitto: questo è uno dei rari casi in cui una varietà giudeo-italiana è indicata con uno specifico glottonimo. Seguono indicazioni circa i principi metodologici adottati per la costituzione del campione, la formulazione del questionario e l'elicitazione dei dati mediante varie tecniche investigative. Il successivo capitolo è dedicato all'analisi degli aspetti fono-morfologici del corpus e alle componenti che ne caratterizzano il lessico differenziale rispetto all'italiano e alle varietà toscane (voci di origine ebraica, iberica o anche italiana e toscana, ma con particolari valori semantici, pragmatici o espressivi). Il fulcro della tesi è comunque il glossario costituito sulla base delle interviste orali. I lemmi raccolti sono 997; per ogni lemma si indicano - oltre alle relative varianti fonetiche - la specificazione grammaticale, la base etimologica e il significato; si riportano poi i contesti di occorrenza con rinvio alle varie interviste. Sin da ora un DVD allegato alla tesi permette il controllo sui relativi segmenti sonori e/o audiovisivi. Ogni singolo lemma si conclude con una sezione dedicata alle sue attestazioni, se esistenti, nella produzione scritta giudeo-livornese e in precedenti glossari o dizionari di ambito livornese, toscano o italiano. Corredano il glossario delle appendici contenenti a) le schede sociolinguistiche dei singoli informatori; b) il lemmario delle voci e delle espressioni attestate nelle fonti a stampa. Quest'ultima appendice permette di apprezzare complessivamente la consistenza del lessico raccolto sul campo rispetto alle fonti giudeo-livornesi scritte (poesie, testi teatrali, lessici, saggi di appassionati e studiosi, ecc.) che coprono circa due secoli, andando dalle canzonette di Purim e dalle prime parodie di fine Settecento sino al Vocabolario livornese con finestra aperta sul bagitto di Giuseppe Marchi (Livorno 1993). Il bagitto sette-ottocentesco era dotato di peculiari caratteri fonomorfologici ed era intimamente legato alle varietà ibero-romanze ancora in uso nella comunità ebraica di Livorno; inoltre varie osservazioni otto- e novecentesche sottolineano quale carattere fortemente distintivo di questa varietà un particolare profilo prosodico e intonativo, identificato spesso come cadenza. Con l'unità d'Italia e soprattutto col XX secolo c'è stato un riallineamento strutturale con le altre parlate giudeo-italiane, che ha prodotto una varietà distinta dal livornese comune ma anche dal giudeo-livornese “di prima fase”. Questa varietà, denominata spesso gergo o ancora bagitto, ha conosciuto dagli anni '30 agli anni '50 una grande fioritura, sul piano letterario e teatrale, ma ha subito, specie dal dopoguerra in poi, un declino nell'uso, che le fonti del secondo Novecento descrivono in termini di imminente o già avvenuta morte del bagitto. L'analisi condotta sulla consistenza del lessico giudeo-livornese nel XXI secolo e sui profili sociolinguistici emersi dalle interviste giunge a conclusioni ben diverse. L'alto numero di lemmi conservatisi (997 rispetto ai 2030 attestati in fonti scritte dal 1793 al 1993), il fatto che oltre un terzo del campione manifesti una conoscenza discreta o elevata del lessico giudeo-livornese, la diversificazione interna di tale lessico rispetto ai vari ambiti concettuali e pragmatici, gli stessi fenomeni di neoformazione lessicale rilevati sono tutti elementi che contraddicono un giudizio di morte o di completo declino di questa varietà. Le schede sociolinguistiche dei singoli informatori, sintetizzate in appositi grafici, forniscono già elementi di valutazione sui contesti, le modalità d'uso e le funzioni pragmatiche di queste voci ed espressioni

Scholarly Sharing Networks and the Revenge of the Paywall

Presentation at TRY+ Library Staff Conference 2018Academic social networks such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu have become popular tools for researchers to interact with their peers, share their work, and access a feed of articles relevant to their scholarship. Additionally, recent years have seen a proliferation of platforms that allow sharing of scholarly content in ways that are not always copyright compliant (e.g. Sci-Hub, the Library of Genesis (LibGen), #ICanHazPDF, etc.). Recently, a group of large publishers formed the Coalition for Responsible Sharing and have begun a legal and publicity campaign to put pressure on ResearchGate to remove access to millions of articles from its platform. Publishers allege that as many as 7 million articles (or 40% of all content) on ResearchGate infringe copyright. In June 2017, one of the world’s largest science publishers, Elsevier, won a default legal judgement and was awarded millions of dollars in damages for copyright infringement by Sci-Hub, LibGen and related sites. This presentation provides an overview of these recent developments and aims to equip attendees with resources necessary to engage in discussions about understanding and complying with publisher copyright policies, ways to advocate for the sharing of scholarly output on the researcher’s terms, legal alternatives to illicit sharing and locating open content, and other forms of assistance that scholarly communications programs at libraries can provide

The Accidental Project Manager

Paper submitted to 2016 IFLA CPDWL Satellite Conference (cancelled)This paper presents the story of the implementation of a complex open-source IT application at the University of Toronto Libraries. The success and failures of the management of this project are highlighted, with a focus on the project management methodologies and skills that, if employed, may have altered the path of the project’s delivery. The paper also examines various project management methodologies as used at other libraries, and will focus on how each can be adopted and adapted for projects and within organizations. The paper examines the state of project management training within North American iSchool curricula, and offers suggestions for how project management skills can be integrated into a library staff member’s skill sets through workplace professional development and/or outside formal education

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Supporting Faculty in Compliance with Funders’ OA Mandates

The new Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications released in 2015 presented SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR funded researchers with a challenge of incorporating compliance into their research workflows. Making publicly funded research publicly available comes across as a very reasonable initiative. Yet it soon became clear that simply informing U of T grant recipients of the new requirements did little to help faculty succeed on this route. Going open access requires some background knowledge of copyright and scholarly communication practices; the closure of the University of Toronto Libraries' Open Access Author Fund combined with the pressures and constraints on researchers’ time made it difficult for faculty to explore this avenue on their own. This is where the Library with its valuable copyright and scholarly communication expertise, strong support for open access and faculty engagement saw an opportunity to step in to make a difference. We have since worked with faculty in 25 departments, reached out to VPRI and liaisons on 3 campuses, verified copyright status of over 800 works, and helped over 40 researchers comply with the mandate by depositing their materials into the U of T open access institutional repository. In this presentation our cross-departmental team of librarians and GSLA will give a brief overview of the Tri-Agency OA Policy requirements and routes to compliance. We will outline the areas where the library resources and expertise can fit organically to ease the task of compliance for faculty, complete with examples of cross-departmental cooperation at UTL. From a coordinated outreach effort and targeted consultations to building capacity for assisted repository deposit, we will share the approaches and tools that can be incorporated by colleagues at any library. We will discuss the success and limitations of each approach as well as routes to move forward with responsive yet scalable services and solutions
