On the corresponding states law of the Yukawa fluid

We have analyzed the currently available simulation results, as well as performed some additional Monte Carlo simulation for the hard-core attractive Yukawa fluid in order to study its corresponding state behavior. We show that the values of reduced surface tension map onto the master curve, and a universal equation of state can be obtained in the wide range of the attractive Yukawa tail length after a certain re-scaling of the number density. Some comparisons with other nonconformal potentials are presented and discussed

The effect of legal barriers to entry in the Spanish retail market: a local market approach.

Recent studies have shown that barriers to entry for large retail establishments in Spain have been increased in the last decade. Using information on local markets, we test whether the entry of large retail establishments was effectively limited by regional regulation and whether it effectively protected in-town shops from competition. We find that if entry barriers were reduced to their average level in 1997, the number of large retail establishments would increase by 11.7%. We also find that over-regulation in 1997 has improved in-town shops’ market position, with their number increasing by 13.8%.Barriers to entry, retail distribution, regulation

Econometric testing of spatial productivity spillovers from public capital

In this paper we review two different approaches followed in the empirical literature to test for the existence of public capital spillovers. Additionally, we explore the role played by an additive aggregator of public capital in neighboring regions versus the multiplicative aggregator used previously in the literature. In the empirical application we compare the different methodologies using a panel data set of the 47 mainland Spanish provinces. We do not find evidence of the existence of spillover effects of public infrastructure.Public capital, public infrastructure, spatial spillovers.

    - FIRM-SPECIFIC TEMPORAL VARIATION IN TECHNICAL EFFICENCY RESULTS OF: A STOCHASTIC OUTPUT DISTANCE FUNCTION

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to test the temporal variation of technical efficiency of the Spanish Savings Banks during the period 1985-1994. Furthermore, a stochastic output distance function (Shephard, 1970) is employed to accommodate multiple output technology. The distance function provides the advantage that it does not need information about prices, so it can accommodate the multiproduct nature of the financial sector only using the quantitiesas data. The temporal variation of efficiency is modeled using an extension of Battese and Coelli (1992), allowing for firm-specific patterns of temporal change.

Thermodynamic properties of short-range attractive Yukawa fluid: Simulation and theory

Coexistence properties of the hard-core attractive Yukawa potential with inverse-range parameter kappa=9, 10, 12 and 15 are calculated by applying canonical Monte Carlo simulation. As previously shown for longer ranges, we show that also for the ranges considered here the coexistence curves scaled by the critical density and temperature obey the law of corresponding states, and that a linear relationship between the critical density and the reciprocal of the critical temperature holds. The simulation results are compared with the predictions of the self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike approximation, and a good agreement is found for both the critical points and the coexistence curves, although some slight discrepancies are present.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. Modelling the developmental patterning of finiteness marking in English, Dutch, German and Spanish using MOSAIC

In this paper we apply MOSAIC (Model of Syntax Acquisition in Children) to the simulation of the developmental patterning of children’s Optional Infinitive (OI) errors in four languages: English, Dutch, German and Spanish. MOSAIC, which has already simulated this phenomenon in Dutch and English, now implements a learning mechanism that better reflects the theoretical assumptions underlying it, as well as a chunking mechanism which results in frequent phrases being treated as one unit. Using one, identical model that learns from child-directed speech, we obtain a close quantitative fit to the data from all four languages, despite there being considerable cross-linguistic and developmental variation in the OI phenomenon. MOSAIC successfully simulates the difference between Spanish (a pro-drop language where OI errors are virtually absent), and Obligatory Subject languages that do display the OI phenomenon. It also highlights differences in the OI phenomenon across German and Dutch, two closely related languages whose grammar is virtually identical with respect to the relation between finiteness and verb placement. Taken together, these results suggest that (a) cross-linguistic differences in the rates at which children produce Optional Infinitives are graded, quantitative differences that closely reflect the statistical properties of the input they are exposed to and (b) theories of syntax acquisition need to consider more closely the role of input characteristics as determinants of quantitative differences in the cross-linguistic patterning of phenomena in language acquisition

    Get PDF
