This study presents historical contexts associated with Devils Tower National Monument (DETO). First, we describe the Tower itself. The following five chapters elucidate themes, better known as historical contexts. The first theme describes how Native Americans occupied the region since about 13,000 years before present. Evidence is clear of their continuous presence in the area. Eras of exploration and settlement follow. The establishment of Devils Tower as the nation鈥檚 first national monument, created by Theodore Roosevelt鈥檚 executive order under the Antiquities Act, occurred in 1906. During the 1930s, development of the park continued with some twists unique to Devils Tower. The CCC era is of particular interest for National Park Service sites across the nation, and Devils Tower is no exception. MISSION 66 improvements transformed the monument and laid out a modernized, standardized park landscape in Devils Tower. The history of climbing also has a significant and unique place in the history of Devils Tower. Buildings and structures dating from 1973 are now of sufficient age to be considered for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. We discuss the 1970s in several places in these narratives and offer a theme and historical context for the 1970s to the present. What is particularly significant for Devils Tower National Monument is how nature and culture come together in every age with the result that people perceive the Tower differently, draw various inspirations from it, and experience Bear Lodge/Devils Tower in unique ways. This is published as Devils Tower National Monument: Historic Resource Study. Montana Gold Mining And The Camp Of Pony

The usual Rocky Mountain gold camp went through a general growth pattern. First the gold was discovered in an area and a rush followed. In this stage, the camp that grew was loosely organized, transitory and totally dependent on the mining. The population fluctuated wildly. Gradually, government and social order became organized, a business district would grow and the temporary camp would gain signs of maturing. The wild days of the boom became quieter and cultural influence showed in the camp\u27s activities. The mature gold camp which evolved was quite different from the early rush camp. The initial excitement of the discovery of gold was gone, the areas were well-known and well-mapped and, as a result, there were few surprises. Most of the wealth was controlled by big corporations. Gone were the individual mine owners and workers. The mature camp might not even rely on mining as its primary industry, as the growth and importance of agriculture increased. This pattern was common to almost all Rocky Mountain gold camps. However, the mere discovery of gold in an area did not guarantee a rush to the area. The existence of gold in Montana had been known as early as 1852 but the rushes did not begin until the 1860s. The discovery had to be assisted by two important factors working together. First, gold rushes almost always occurred at times of national instability when men motivated by widespread turbulence or upheaval moved out in search of quick fortune. Secondly, a gold rush did not occur unless a man or group of men publicized and promoted the rush.H A look at the three major gold rushes in Montana reveals that all three fit both this general growth pattern and that these two factors were present to precipitate the rush. The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of one gold camp in Montana and to fit it into the framework of the major strikes and current events in Montana at that time. I will examine the mining at Pony, Montana and determine if this camp fits the common growth pattern, and if the two factors discussed previously are present. In conclusion, I will consider the impact of mining on early Montana through the case study of Pony

This paper explores the impact of retrofitting single-family residential buildings in historic districts with energy efficiency measures that are compliant with the 2012 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). This study focuses on Sears's kit homes that were built in the early 1900s in the historic district of Havre, Montana. By conducting whole building energy simulations, this study assesses the impact of implementing each measure in terms of energy savings, reduction in carbon emissions and resultant paybacks. In addition the selected measures were grouped together into various groups and assessed. Combining all measures provided 81% energy savings and a simple payback period of 4-8 years and a time until Net Present Value (NPV) of 9.5 - > 30 years over the corresponding base-case. In addition to demonstrating strong economic justifications, the implementation of efficiency measures is highly recommended for the benefit of preserving historic districts and in turn contributing to the reduction in energy consumption as well as carbon emissions of historic residential building stock in the United States

Today's world demands skilled professionals and English is the language of choice for communication in theglobal marketplace. Responding to the needs of a rapidly changing world we invite our students to learn anddevelop the four basic skills required in a foreign language: listening speaking reading and writing. By building these skills and exploring new ideas students will be able to understand speak read and write inEnglish at their current level. After completion of the intermediate level students will be able to manage diverse academic texts as well as make successful oral presentations in English
