    An SU(5)Ă—A5 golden ratio flavour model

    In this paper we study an SU(5)Ă—A5 flavour model which exhibits a neutrino mass sum rule and golden ratio mixing in the neutrino sector which is corrected from the charged lepton Yukawa couplings. We give the full renormalisable superpotential for the model which breaks SU(5) and A5 after integrating out heavy messenger fields and minimising the scalar potential. The mass sum rule allows for both mass orderings but we will show that inverted ordering is not valid in this setup. For normal ordering we find the lightest neutrino to have a mass of about 10-50 meV, and all leptonic mixing angles in agreement with experiment

    Dimensional Crossover of Localisation and Delocalisation in a Quantum Hall Bar

    The 2-- to 1--dimensional crossover of the localisation length of electrons confined to a disordered quantum wire of finite width LyL_y is studied in a model of electrons moving in the potential of uncorrelated impurities. An analytical formula for the localisation length is derived, describing the dimensional crossover as function of width LyL_y, conductance gg and perpendicular magnetic field BB . On the basis of these results, the scaling analysis of the quantum Hall effect in high Landau levels, and the delocalisation transition in a quantum Hall wire are reconsidered.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Social Overlays: Collectively Making Websites More Usable

    Abstract. Many small organizations lack the expertise and resources to conduct usability evaluations of their websites. Social Overlays, presented here, is a new system that allows a community of users to collectively improve their website. Social Overlays enables end–users to identify and repair common user interface problems through creating “overlays ” on web pages as part of their regular use, thereby improving usability while reducing the need for professional services. In short, Social Overlays harnesses the diversity of experience and ideas within a community to "crowd source " usability. To evaluate Social Overlays, we examined whether a group of community members without any usability training could use Social Overlays to identify and repair UI problems on their medium–sized community’s website. We found that they could. Community users were able to uncover a large number of UI problems and formulate reasonable solutions to the problems they identified. In addition, we compared Social Overlays to two standard ways of assessing website usability: expert inspection and usability testing. We found that Social Overlays users identified more problems, and their reported problems differed in useful ways from those found by the experts and the usability testing team

    Comparison of high-order harmonic generation in uracil and thymine ablation plumes

    We present studies of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in laser ablation plumes of the ribonucleic acid nucleobase uracil and its deoxyribonucleic acid counterpart thymine. Harmonics were generated using 780 nm, 30 fs and 1300 nm, 40 fs radiation upon ablation with 1064 nm, 10 ns or 780 nm, 160 ps pulses. Strong HHG signals were observed from uracil plumes with harmonics emitted with photon energies >55 eV. Results obtained in uracil plumes were compared with those from thymine, which did not yield signs of harmonic generation. The ablation plumes of the two compounds were examined by collection of the ablation debris on a silicon substrate placed in close proximity to the target and by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. From this evidence we conclude that the differences in HHG signal are due to the different fragmentation dynamics of the molecules in the plasma plume. These studies constitute the first attempt to analyse differences in structural properties of complex molecules through plasma ablation-induced HHG spectroscopy. © 2013 the Owner Societies.Peer Reviewe

    Multiple Active States and Oligomerization of CCR5 Revealed by Functional Properties of Monoclonal Antibodies

    CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is the principal coreceptor for macrophage-tropic strains of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). We have generated a set of anti-CCR5 monoclonal antibodies and characterized them in terms of epitope recognition, competition with chemokine binding, receptor activation and trafficking, and coreceptor activity. MC-4, MC-5, and MC-7 mapped to the amino-terminal domain, MC-1 to the second extracellular loop, and MC-6 to a conformational epitope covering multiple extracellular domains. MC-1 and MC-6 inhibited regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES), macrophage inflammatory polypeptide-1β, and Env binding, whereas MC-5 inhibited macrophage inflammatory polypeptide-1β and Env but not RANTES binding. MC-6 induced signaling in different functional assays, suggesting that this monoclonal antibody stabilizes an active conformation of CCR5. Flow cytometry and real-time confocal microscopy showed that MC-1 promoted strong CCR5 endocytosis. MC-1 but not its monovalent isoforms induced an increase in the transfer of energy between CCR5 molecules. Also, its monovalent isoforms bound efficiently, but did not internalize the receptor. In contrast, MC-4 did not prevent RANTES binding or subsequent signaling, but inhibited its ability to promote CCR5 internalization. These results suggest the existence of multiple active conformations of CCR5 and indicate that CCR5 oligomers are involved in an internalization process that is distinct from that induced by the receptor's agonists
