    The teaching of community civics

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of ArtsText taken from page ii: "This thesis is the outgrowth of a feeling that our present day civics is, in a large measure, inadequate to the needs of our citizenship. During my four years' experience in teaching civics in high school I had a growing conviction that the traditional civic instruction did not meet the interests of the high school students and certainly did not help them in any positive way to fully appreciate their civic obligations and opportunities. High school students complained that civics was hard and uninteresting. I realized the problem end endeavored to remedy conditions. Better results came by making a closer study of local problems and by introducing the study of current events. The subject was still almost wholly a study of the political agencies. The interest which was taken in the study of current events and the interest which was shown in a brief course in sociology brought to me the importance of greater study of social conditions.

    The Ultraviolet Detection of Diffuse Gas in Galaxy Groups

    A small survey of the UV-absorbing gas in 12 low-zz galaxy groups has been conducted using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Targets were selected from a large, homogeneously-selected sample of groups found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). A critical selection criterion excluded sight lines that pass close (<1.5<1.5 virial radii) to a group galaxy, to ensure absorber association with the group as a whole. Deeper galaxy redshift observations are used both to search for closer galaxies and also to characterize these 1013.510^{13.5} to 1014.5M⊙10^{14.5} M_{\odot} groups, the most massive of which are highly-virialized with numerous early-type galaxies (ETGs). This sample also includes two spiral-rich groups, not yet fully-virialized. At group-centric impact parameters of 0.3-2 Mpc, these S/N=15\mathrm{S/N}=15-30 spectra detected HI absorption in 7 of 12 groups; high (OVI) and low (SiIII) ion metal lines are present in 2/3 of the absorption components. None of the three most highly-virialized, ETG-dominated groups are detected in absorption. Covering fractions ≳50\gtrsim50% are seen at all impact parameters probed, but do not require large filling factors despite an enormous extent. Unlike halo clouds in individual galaxies, group absorbers have radial velocities which are too low to escape the group potential well without doubt. This suggests that these groups are "closed boxes" for galactic evolution in the current epoch. Evidence is presented that the cool and warm group absorbers are not a pervasive intra-group medium (IGrM), requiring a hotter (T∼106T\sim10^6 to 10710^7 K) IGrM to be present to close the baryon accounting.Comment: Resubmitted to ApJS after first review; 82 pages (27 for main text, rest are Appendices and supplemental figures and tables), 47 figures, 21 table

    Direct Detection of Exoplanets

Jewitt Eds.Direct detection of exoplanets from the ground is now within reach of existing astronomical instruments. Indeed, a few planet candidates have already been imaged and analyzed and the capability to detect (through imaging or interferometry) young, hot, Jupiter-mass planets exists. We present here an overview of what such detection methods can be expected to do in the near and far term. These methods will provide qualitatively new information about exoplanets, including spectroscopic data that will mature the study of exoplanets into a new field of comparative exoplanetary science. Spectroscopic study of exoplanet atmospheres promises to reveal aspects of atmospheric physics and chemistry as well as internal structure. Astrometric measurements will complete orbital element determinations partially known from the radial velocity surveys. We discuss the impact of these techniques, on three different time scales, corresponding to the currently available instruments, the new ``Planet Finder'' systems under development for 8 to 10-m telescopes, foreseen to be in operation in 5 to 10 years, and the more ambitious but more distant projects at the horizon of 2020

    Management of Children With Chronic Wet Cough and Protracted Bacterial Bronchitis CHEST Guideline and Expert Panel Report

    BACKGROUND: Wet or productive cough is common in children with chronic cough. We formulated recommendations based on systematic reviews related to the management of chronic wet cough in children (aged METHODS: We used the CHEST expert cough panel\u27s protocol for systematic reviews and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) methodologic guidelines and GRADE framework (the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation). Data from the systematic reviews in conjunction with patients\u27 values and preferences and the clinical context were used to form recommendations. Delphi methodology was used to obtain consensus for the recommendations/suggestions made. RESULTS: Combining data from the systematic reviews, we found high-quality evidence in children aged 4 weeks\u27 duration) wet/productive cough that using appropriate antibiotics improves cough resolution, and further investigations (eg, flexible bronchoscopy, chest CT scans, immunity tests) should be undertaken when specific cough pointers (eg, digital clubbing) are present. When the wet cough does not improve following 4 weeks of antibiotic treatment, there is moderate-quality evidence that further investigations should be considered to look for an underlying disease. New recommendations include the recognition of the clinical diagnostic entity of protracted bacterial bronchitis. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with the 2006 Cough Guidelines, there is now high-quality evidence for some, but not all, aspects of the management of chronic wet cough in specialist settings. However, further studies (particularly in primary health) are required

    Arabidopsis \u3ci\u3eGLABROUS1\u3c/i\u3e Gene Requires Downstream Sequences for Function

    The Arabidopsis GLABROUSl (GL1) gene is a myb gene homolog required for the initiation of trichome development. In situ hybridiration revealed that the highest levels of GL1 transcripts were present in developing trichomes. In contrast, previous work had shown that putative promoter sequences from the 5‘ noncoding region of the GL1 gene directed the expression of a β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene only in stipules. Deletion analysis of the 3’ noncoding region of GL1 has identified an enhancer that is essential for GL1 function. Sequences fmm the region containing the enhancer, in conjunction with GL1 upstream sequences, direct the expression of a GUS reporter gene in leaf primordia and developing trichomes in addition to stipules, indicating that the downstream enhancer is required for the normal expression pattern of GL1
