How physicians caring for adult patients presenting a chronic mental disturbance take account of the difficulties their patientsâ children under 18: Preliminary study
AbstractAimsTo study how physicians caring for adult patients presenting a chronic mental disturbance take account of the difficulties of their patientsâ children under 18.MethodExploratory and qualitative study based on an in-depth study of interviews.Study populationThirteen physiatrists or neurologists following brain-damaged patients and 12 psychiatrists following patients with chronic psychiatric disorders.ResultsIn the two groups of physicians, diversified practices in catering for the issues of the patient's parenthood, childâparent relationships, and difficulties experienced by the child. The child's difficulties are not approached as such. For many of the physicians, representations of the parenting function, and of the child's needs and difficulties are not often used in work with the patient. Patient-centred care appears at odds with catering for the patient's children and their specific difficulties. The seriousness of the mental pathologies, their chronic nature, and the fact that they can affect the patient in his/her parental functioning and concerns, appear as factors in the reluctance of physicians. Other reasons are lack of familiarity with issues relating to childhood, and the feeling of encroaching on a private and intimate sphere. The representations of physicians with regard to parenthood, parentâchild relations, and the needs and difficulties of children, are often not integrated into the corpus of knowledge. These issues are more often aspects of physiciansâ own experience.ConclusionThe conflict of values and the uneasiness of the physicians suggest the need for ethical reflection groups or Balint groups
Scaling-violation phenomena and fractality in the human posture control systems
By analyzing the movements of quiet standing persons by means of wavelet
statistics, we observe multiple scaling regions in the underlying body
dynamics. The use of the wavelet-variance function opens the possibility to
relate scaling violations to different modes of posture control. We show that
scaling behavior becomes close to perfect, when correctional movements are

Spin dependent observable effect for free particles using the arrival time distribution
The mean arrival time of free particles is computed using the quantum
probability current. This is uniquely determined in the non-relativistic limit
of Dirac equation, although the Schroedinger probability current has an
inherent non-uniqueness. Since the Dirac probability current involves a
spin-dependent term, an arrival time distribution based on the probability
current shows an observable spin-dependent effect, even for free particles.
This arises essentially from relativistic quantum dynamics, but persists even

Frame Theory for Signal Processing in Psychoacoustics
This review chapter aims to strengthen the link between frame theory and
signal processing tasks in psychoacoustics. On the one side, the basic concepts
of frame theory are presented and some proofs are provided to explain those
concepts in some detail. The goal is to reveal to hearing scientists how this
mathematical theory could be relevant for their research. In particular, we
focus on frame theory in a filter bank approach, which is probably the most
relevant view-point for audio signal processing. On the other side, basic
psychoacoustic concepts are presented to stimulate mathematicians to apply
their knowledge in this field
Time-of-arrival distributions from position-momentum and energy-time joint measurements
The position-momentum quasi-distribution obtained from an Arthurs and Kelly
joint measurement model is used to obtain indirectly an ``operational''
time-of-arrival (TOA) distribution following a quantization procedure proposed
by Kocha\'nski and W\'odkiewicz [Phys. Rev. A 60, 2689 (1999)]. This TOA
distribution is not time covariant. The procedure is generalized by using other
phase-space quasi-distributions, and sufficient conditions are provided for
time covariance that limit the possible phase-space quasi-distributions
essentially to the Wigner function, which, however, provides a non-positive TOA
quasi-distribution. These problems are remedied with a different quantization
procedure which, on the other hand, does not guarantee normalization. Finally
an Arthurs and Kelly measurement model for TOA and energy (valid also for
arbitrary conjugate variables when one of the variables is bounded from below)
is worked out. The marginal TOA distribution so obtained, a distorted version
of Kijowski's distribution, is time covariant, positive, and normalized
Cytotoxicity and DNA damage in the neutrophils of patients with sickle cell anaemia treated with hydroxyurea
Hydroxyurea (HU) is the most important advance in the treatment of sickle cell anaemia (SCA) for preventing complications and improving quality of life for patients. However, some aspects of treatment with HU remain unclear, including their effect on and potential toxicity to other blood cells such as neutrophils. This study used the measurement of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) and Methyl ThiazolTetrazolium (MTT) and the comet assay to investigate the cytotoxicity and damage index (DI) of the DNA in the neutrophils of patients with SCA using HU.In the LDH and MTT assays, a cytoprotective effect was observed in the group of patients treated, as well as an absence of toxicity. When compared to patients without the treatment, the SS group (n=20, 13 women and 07 men, aged 18-69 years), and the group of healthy individuals (AA) used as a control group (n=52, 28 women and 24 men, aged 19-60 years), The SSHU group (n=21, 11 women and 10 men, aged 19-63 years) showed a significant reduction (p20 months), demonstrating that despite the cytoprotective effects in terms of cell viability, the use of HU can induce DNA damage in neutrophils
