    Get PDF
This work adopted the ordinary least square (OLS) method to examine Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) of the Nigerian government executive order six as a form of tax amnesty and its impact on tax revenue of Value Added Tax (VAT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT) in retrospect. The data of this study were obtained mainly from secondary sources from Federal Inland Revenue Service reports and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin. Econometric models/packages were used in this work. The result of the findings reveal that Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) had a significant impact on VAT while Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) did not have any significant impact on personal income tax. This work recommends that the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme should be modified to be a permanent programme as a separate body or a Department Federal Inland Revenue Service should be set up to inspect and ensure the smooth running of the programme and the regulatory bodies should ensure that it implement policies that will reduce the loop holes in tax laws which tax payers capitalized on to evade tax. Prediction of Concrete Mix Cost Using Modified Regression Theory

    Get PDF
The cost of concrete production which largely depends on the cost of the constituent materials, affects the overall cost of construction. In this paper, a model based on modified regression theory is formulated to optimise concrete mix cost (in Naira). Using the model, one can predict the cost per cubic meter of concrete if the mix ratios are given. The model can also give possible mix ratios for a specified cost. Statistical tool was used to verify the adequacy of this model. The concrete cost analysis is based on the current market prices of concrete constituent materials. A Price Fluctuation Factor (PFF) can be used to take care of price fluctuations over time

Land use change affects soil quality, but the extent of the effect at Umudike area of Abia State Nigeria, remainsunclear. The study examined the impact of seven land use types: Natural Forest Reserved land (NFRL), ArableLand (AL), Recreational Land (RL), Pasture Grass Land (PGL), Reforestation Land (RFL), Short Period FallowLand (SPFL), and Oil Palm Plantation Land (OPPL) on some selected soil properties. The aim of the study were:to investigate what extent, if any, deterioration of the soil as a result of change from forest to other forms of use;and if soil's organic matter was related to the soil's other properties. Soils were sampled under forest and six otherforms of land use mentioned. The soil properties determined were; pH, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, bulkdensity, total porosity, moisture content, particle size distribution, and mean weight diameter. Relationshipsbetween the soil properties and soil organic matter, which is assumed as an indicator of soil quality in the studyarea, were also estimated. Results show that soil organic matter increased significantly (p<0.05) under NFRL to43.47 g kg-1, and decreased to 0.52 g kg-1 under AL. Bulk density value was lowest ( 1.25 g cm-3) for NFRL,followed by the PGL (1.30 g cm-3). Results of the percentage soil deterioration index indicated that RL had thehighest value of 24.6%. There was a linear and strong negative relationship (R2 = 0.8778 and r = -0.83***)between soil organic matter and bulk density. Conversely, between soil organic matter and mean weight diameter, strong positive relationship (R2 = 0.7428 and r = -0.83***) was estimated. We conclude therefore, that theadoption of good soil management practices that would improve the soil properties of the other land use apartfrom NFRL should be encouraged

Employee morale in the national electric power authority (Nepa) of Nigeria: a study of the eastern zones

    Get PDF
Employee morale is one of the predictors of organizational efficiency and effectiveness. This study, carried out in 2004, enquired into the morale of NEPA staff in the Eastern zones with a view to finding out if it can be held as one of the factors responsible for NEPA's dismal performance while it existed. Findings show that employee morale was high on three out of the four morale predictors investigated and that there was a relationship between sex and the way employees were treated. A few recommendations are made for the attention of NEPA’s successor, the Power Holding Company (PHCN) of Nigeria. Key words: Employee morale, Predictors, PHCN, Organizational efficiency, Eastern zone

Trading Systems and Growth Process in ASEAN-5 Economics

    Get PDF
This study centers on the analysis of effect of two main trade relations - multilateral and regional trade liberalizations, on the macroeconomic variables (GDP growth rates, foreign direct investment, and wage rate) of five ASEAN countries namely Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The study covers the period 1976- 2000. Endogenous growth model built on the framework of Bronsztein et al. (1998) is utilized and Generalised Least Square (GLS) fixed effects estimation technique is applied to estimate the parameters. Convergence hypothesis is also tested in the data. Four measures of trade liberalisation - trade share, Dollar's exchange rate distortion, average tariff and regional trade arrangement (RTA) dummy for participation regional trade arrangements, are constructed. The main results are that multilateral trade liberalisation and participation in regional trade arrangement lead to faster growth rate. This implies that maintaining stable exchange rate, tariff on selected key products, and high trade share boost economic iii [ a ~ growth in ASEAN region. Regional groupings could be utilized to achieve stable economic growth. Other important determinants of the cross-country growth rates are wage rate, employment level and FDI emphasizing the importance of incentives to workers and technology to improve total factor productivity per worker. Also multilateral trade liberalisation accelerates FDI, while regional trade liberalisation decelerates it. Other factors that influence the location of FDI in the regional economies are wage rate (low labour cost), employment level, human capital and initial GDP. Market size is not an important factor in the location of FDI in ASEAN countries in the regional and multilateral trading system. Where it is significant, its effect is negative. There is no noticeable effect of multilateral trading system on wage rate but regional trade liberalisation has. The most important determinants of wage rate in ASEAN region are GDP growth rates and FDI and employment level in both trade liberalisations. The impact of multilateral trading system on total factor productivity is positive with exchange rate distortion index and negative with average tariff. Regional trade liberalisation leads to low total factor productivity. The factors influencing total factor productivity are FDI, wage rate and export intensity in both trade liberalizations. Our data detect unconditional and conditional P - convergence. The conditional P -convergences in either trade liberalization 2re similar. This shows that ASEAN colintries can follow either of trading system to achieve the long run steady state equilibrium

Adoption of Treasury Single Account (TSA) and Economic Growth of Nigeria: A Reappraisal

    Get PDF
The study reappraised the effect of Treasury Single Account (TSA) on economic growth of Nigeria. The major objective was to ascertain whether there is a significant relationship between Federal Government total revenue within the TSA period and the Gross Domestic Product of Nigeria. Other objective was to investigate the difference existing between Federal Government total revenue Pre and Post TSA periods in Nigeria. The research design for this study was expo-facto. The work adopted secondary data generated from CBN Statistical Bulletin. The data used were those of Federal Government total revenue and Nominal GDP from 1981_ 2021. Ordinary Least Square analysis techniques was employed and run on E- views 10 for the regression analysis while T-test was adopted for the Pre-Post analysis in addition to other diagnostic techniques applied in the study. Results showed that there is a significant relationship between FG total revenue within the TSA period and GDP; it was also revealed that there is a significant difference in FG total revenue between the Pre TSA and Post TSA periods. This study recommended among others that Implementation of Treasury Single Accounts (TSA) policy should be sustained across all sectors of the economy; no doubt it will improve economic growth of the country and also that other loopholes should be avoided through TSA to further enhance the GDP of the country.
