A study of post-menopausal breast abscesses in West Africa

It is acknowledged that the highest incidence of breast abscess occurs in lactating women. Methods; Between February 1970 and February 2000, 215 females with suspected breast abscess were biopsied by 97 doctors working in 34 hospitals attended by patients of the Igbo or Ibo ethnic group in Nigeria, West Africa. Their data were retrieved and analyzed. Results: Their ages ranged from 11 to 78 years, averaged 40.5 years and peaked between 31 and 40 years. Breast abscess was seen in 53 of them. Conclusion: Breast abscess is common (22.3%) in post-menopausal Igbo patients aged over 50 years. Prevalence of dyslipidemia among adult diabetic patients with overt diabetic nephropathy in Anambra state South-East Nigeria

    Get PDF
Background: Dyslipidemia has been identified as a risk factor for the development and progression of diabetic renal disease. Objective: This study was done to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia among diabetic patients with overt nephropathy.Materials and Methods: A total of 72 diabetic patients with overt diabetic nephropathy and 36 age- and sex-matched normoalbuminuric diabetic patients were studied. Their fasting lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, and renal function tests were evaluated. Results: Total serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides were significantly higher in patients with overt diabetic nephropathy compared to the controls; 66.7% and 62.5% versus 36.1% and 30.6%, respectively (P = 0.003 and 0.002, respectively). Conclusions: Diabetic patients with overt diabetic nephropathy have significant dyslipidemia and aggressive lipid lowering in these patients may retard their progression to end-stage renal disease

The effect of burnt and un-burnt land on soil physicochemical characteristics in Ekeya-Okobo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Slash and burn method of land clearing is an integral part of the traditional farming system widely used as a means of land clearing to pave way for crop production in southern Nigeria. This management has both beneficial and detrimental effects on soil and its properties. Based on this, effects of fire on soil quality dynamics was examined during slashing and burning of the plots at the depths ranging between 0-15, 15-30cm respectively. The soil sample point s was chosen using a simple random sampling and the soil sampled were analyzed for the selected physical and chemical characteristics. ANOVA was used for significance difference between soil from burnt and unburnt plots using statistical package for social science (SPSS), and significant means were compared using Duncan multiple range test. Paired t-test was used to compare means of the unburnt and burnt plots. At the depth of 0-15cm, the unburnt plot recorded decrease in pH(H2O) 5.6, pH ( KCI)4.9, increase in sand, silt, K and base saturation, while burnt plotrecorded increase in clay, SOC, SOM ,TN , Avail P., Ca2+, Mg2++, Na+ and EC (H++Al3+). At the depth of 15-30cm, unburnt plot recorded low pH in H2O and Kcl, silt, Mg and EC while burnt plot recorded highest values in other selected parameters than unburnt plot. Between the two plots sampled, changes of physical and chemical parameters were significant at the P :< 0.05 probability level, (Ftab = 4.60 Fcal= 1.597Ω 1.6). Based on this, there is a need for environmental education for farmers in the area to know the implications of burning of farmland on soil ecosystem and environment as a whole for soil sustainability that will boost food production. Keywords: Burnt and un-burnt, Soil, physiochemical, agriculture, soil acidit

Review of Food Safety Policy in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Food safety is an integral part of food and nutrition security. Foodborne diseases (FBD) can occur when food safety measures are not applied. Unfortunately, most of the burden of foodborne illness is shouldered by children under five years of age and people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The foundation of food safety is built upon a quality-safety culture, compliance with food laws, regulation, policy, traceability, and food safety management systems encompassing documentation, training, auditing, reporting and corrective action. This paper reviews four existing national policy documents in Nigeria, three of which include food safety components.  The fourth document, the National Policy on Food Safety and Its Implementation Strategy (NPFSIS), is Nigeria’s principal food safety policy document and was reviewed in more detail. This review focuses on the situational and analytical concepts of the policy framework of the National Food Safety System (NFSS) in Nigeria. It also examines the status of the implementation of the NPFSIS 2014 and its alignment with international best practices. It was undertaken to assess existing food safety policy documents in Nigeria, identify gaps, make recommendations, and proffer solutions.
