The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Project Follow Through, a federally funded compensatory education program for reducing the progressive intellectual retardation of culturally disadvan- taged children as they advance through school. The progressive intellectual retardation of children from poor environments has long been noted. Gordon (cited in Hunt, 1969) in studying the mental develop- ment of a sample of English canal boat children, noted that at ages four to six their mean IQ was 90 and then decreased to a mean of around 60 at ages twelve to twenty-two. In this study he found age and IQ to have a high negative correlation (-.755)

A Mathematical Model for Neutrophil Gradient Sensing and Polarization

Directed cell migration in response to chemical cues, also known as chemotaxis, is an important physiological process involved in wound healing, foraging, and the immune response. Cell migration requires the simultaneous formation of actin polymers at the leading edge and actomyosin complexes at the sides and back of the cell. An unresolved question in eukaryotic chemotaxis is how the same chemoattractant signal determines both the cell's front and back. Recent experimental studies have begun to reveal the biochemical mechanisms necessary for this polarized cellular response. We propose a mathematical model of neutrophil gradient sensing and polarization based on experimentally characterized biochemical mechanisms. The model demonstrates that the known dynamics for Rho GTPase and phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) activation are sufficient for both gradient sensing and polarization. In particular, the model demonstrates that these mechanisms can correctly localize the “front” and “rear” pathways in response to both uniform concentrations and gradients of chemical attractants, including in actin-inhibited cells. Furthermore, the model predictions are robust to the values of many parameters. A key result of the model is the proposed coincidence circuit involving PI3K and Ras that obviates the need for the “global inhibitors” proposed, though never experimentally verified, in many previous mathematical models of eukaryotic chemotaxis. Finally, experiments are proposed to (in)validate this model and further our understanding of neutrophil chemotaxis

    Mini-Hand Extension

Lam Research supplies equipment for manufacturing silicon wafers used in semiconductor manufacturing. Their equipment is highly sophisticated and therefore costly, both in time and money, to repair. Much of the time and money spent to service those machines when they require maintenance or repair is spent on disassembly, so Lam seeks a faster way to service their equipment. Al Schoepp, a Senior Technical Director at Lam Research, came to Cal Poly seeking a team of students to design and build a device that could emulate the human hand well enough to handle hardware and thread nuts and bolts but also be usable inside one of the manufacturing machines at Lam. Team R.E.A.C.H., consisting of Aulivia Bounchaleun, Haden Cory, Scott Onsum, and Zack Phillips, have designed a device called the R.E.A.C.H. device, which stands for Reach Extender And Component Handler, to help Lam Research save both time and money when servicing their equipment. The device is operable with one hand, has an integrated vision and lighting system with a wireless monitor, can extend the user’s reach up to almost 24 inches, and can fit through a two inch diameter hole while carrying a ½-13 nut. This report details the design process that Team R.E.A.C.H. used to develop the R.E.A.C.H. device starting from the initial background research and problem definition all the way up through the detailed analysis and technical drawings of the prototype

Mindset Matters: How and When Fixed Digital Mindset Influences Employees’ Approach Towards and Avoidance of New Workplace Technology Navn:

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Psychology - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2020The aim of the present study was to investigate whether having a fixed digital mindset relates to employees' approach or avoidance towards new workplace technology. We draw on the field of implicit theories and the job crafting literature to explore technology acceptance in a novel manner. The study used questionnaire data collected at two time points from 94 employees in a Norwegian firm where a new technology was being implemented. The results of our first model indicate that there is a relationship between fixed digital mindset and the extent to which employees avoid technology, and this can be influenced by perceptions of subjective norms. Concerning our second model, the hypothesized moderated mediation relating fixed digital mindset to technology approach was not supported. This indicated that training initiative frequency and perceived usefulness did not mediate the relationship, even though digital selfefficacy was found to partially moderate the relationship between having a fixed digital mindset and training initiative frequency. These findings

Title: What challenges can nurses face when relieving pain in terminal patients with dementia? Results: The result of the study shows multiple challenges a nurse can face in conjunction with pain management in patients with dementia at the end of life. The challenges can consist of communication, assessment, administration of medicamentation, in addition to experience and knowledge deficiencies. Conclusion: Nurses lack of competence can be a barrier to pain relief in patients with dementia at the end of life. Challenges with communication can be crucial for the patients nursing. With focusing on how the nurse can master the challenges, the patient group will be able to relieve pain optimally

Mathematical models for immunology:current state of the art and future research directions

    Get PDF
The advances in genetics and biochemistry that have taken place over the last 10 years led to significant advances in experimental and clinical immunology. In turn, this has led to the development of new mathematical models to investigate qualitatively and quantitatively various open questions in immunology. In this study we present a review of some research areas in mathematical immunology that evolved over the last 10 years. To this end, we take a step-by-step approach in discussing a range of models derived to study the dynamics of both the innate and immune responses at the molecular, cellular and tissue scales. To emphasise the use of mathematics in modelling in this area, we also review some of the mathematical tools used to investigate these models. Finally, we discuss some future trends in both experimental immunology and mathematical immunology for the upcoming years

Response to Brentuximab Vedotin by CD30 Expression in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

BACKGROUND: The safety and efficacy of brentuximab vedotin (BV), an antibody-drug conjugate directed to the CD30 antigen, has been assessed in several trials in patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), or B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The objective of this research was to examine the relationship between CD30 expression level and clinical response to BV. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed response in patients treated with BV monotherapy in 5 prospective clinical studies in relapsed or refractory PTCL, CTCL, or B-cell NHL. CD30 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using the Ber H2 antibody for 275 patients. RESULTS: Across all 5 studies, 140 (50.9%) patients had tumors with CD30 expression CONCLUSIONS: In this analysis of studies across a range of CD30-expressing lymphomas, CD30 expression alone, as measured by standard IHC, does not predict clinical benefit from BV, making the determination of a threshold level of expression uncertain
