A new method for extracting conodonts and radiolarians from chert with NaOH solution
Microfossils are important components of sedi- mentary rocks used for palaeontological, biostratigraphic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic investigations. They are usually extracted from rocks using an acid solution, which might vary depending on the embedding rock lithology. Here we propose a new method using common NaOH (sodium hydroxide; soda) to digest cherts (micro- and cryptocrystalline quartz) instead of the standard technique based on HF (hydrofluoric acid). This new method allows the collection of undamaged specimens of different kinds of microfossils, such as conodonts, radiolarians, teeth and dermal scales, the miner- ology of which is still preserved (e.g. biogenic apatite in cono- donts). The use of soda is thus recommended, as it is less dangerous, less expensive, and it better preserves the extracted microfossils both in shape and mineralogy
Genome-wide study on the polysomic genetic factors conferring plasticity of flower sexuality in hexaploid persimmon
Sexuality is one of the fundamental mechanisms that work towards maintaining genetic diversity within a species. In diploid persimmons (Diospyros spp.), separated sexuality, the presence of separate male and female individuals (dioecy), is controlled by the Y chromosome-encoded small-RNA gene, OGI. On the other hand, sexuality in hexaploid Oriental persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is more plastic, with OGI-bearing genetically male individuals, able to produce both male and female flowers (monoecy). This is thought to be linked to the partial inactivation of OGI by a retrotransposon insertion, resulting in DNA methylation of the OGI promoter region. To identify the genetic factors regulating branch sexual conversion, genome-wide correlation/association analyses were conducted using ddRAD-Seq data from an F-1 segregating population, and using both quantitative and diploidized genotypes, respectively. We found that allelic ratio at the Y-chromosomal region, including OGI, was correlated with male conversion based on quantitative genotypes, suggesting that OGI can be activated in cis in a dosage-dependent manner. Genome-wide association analysis based on diploidized genotypes, normalized for the effect of OGI allele dosage, detected three fundamental loci associated with male conversion. These loci underlie candidate genes, which could potentially act epigenetically for the activation of OGI expression

X-ray emission from a rapidly accreting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy at z = 6.56
The space density of X-ray-luminous, blindly selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) traces the population of rapidly accreting super-massive black holes through cosmic time. It is encoded in the X-ray luminosity function, whose bright end remains poorly constrained in the first billion years after the Big Bang as X-ray surveys have thus far lacked the required cosmological volume. With the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), the largest contiguous and homogeneous X-ray survey to date, X-ray AGN population studies can now be extended to new regions of the luminosity-redshift space (L2-10 keV > 1045 erg s-1 and z > 6). Aims. The current study aims at identifying luminous quasars at z > 5:7 among X-ray-selected sources in the eFEDS field in order to place a lower limit on black hole accretion well into the epoch of re-ionisation. A secondary goal is the characterisation of the physical properties of these extreme coronal emitters at high redshifts. Methods. Cross-matching eFEDS catalogue sources to optical counterparts from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, we confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint z = 6:56 quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the low-significance eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we derived the physical properties of the super-massive black hole. Finally, we used this detection to infer a lower limit on the black hole accretion density rate at z > 6. Results. The Chandra observation confirms the eFEDS source as the most distant blind X-ray detection to date. The derived X-ray luminosity is high with respect to the rest-frame optical emission of the quasar.With a narrow Mgii line, low derived black hole mass, and high Eddington ratio, as well as its steep photon index, the source shows properties that are similar to local narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, which are thought to be powered by young super-massive black holes. In combination with a previous high-redshift quasar detection in the field, we show that quasars with L2-10 keV > 1045 erg s-1 dominate accretion onto super-massive black holes at z _ 6
Hyper-luminous Dust Obscured Galaxies discovered by the Hyper Suprime-Cam on Subaru and WISE
We present the photometric properties of a sample of infrared (IR) bright
dust obscured galaxies (DOGs). Combining wide and deep optical images obtained
with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope and all-sky mid-IR
(MIR) images taken with Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), we
discovered 48 DOGs with and , where
, , and [22] represent AB magnitude in the -band,
-band, and 22 m, respectively, in the GAMA 14hr field
( 9 deg). Among these objects, 31 ( 65 %) show power-law
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the near-IR (NIR) and MIR regime, while
the remainder show a NIR bump in their SEDs. Assuming that the redshift
distribution for our DOGs sample is Gaussian, with mean and sigma = 1.99
0.45, we calculated their total IR luminosity using an empirical relation
between 22 m luminosity and total IR luminosity. The average value of the
total IR luminosity is (3.5 1.1) L, which
classifies them as hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs). We also derived
the total IR luminosity function (LF) and IR luminosity density (LD) for a
flux-limited subsample of 18 DOGs with 22 m flux greater than 3.0 mJy and
with -band magnitude brighter than 24 AB magnitude. The derived space
density for this subsample is log = -6.59 0.11 [Mpc]. The
IR LF for DOGs including data obtained from the literature is well fitted by a
double-power law. The derived lower limit for the IR LD for our sample is
3.8 10 [L Mpc] and
its contributions to the total IR LD, IR LD of all ultra-luminous infrared
galaxies (ULIRGs), and that of all DOGs are 3 %, 9 %, and 15 %,

The Hyper Suprime-Cam SSP Survey: Overview and Survey Design
Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of
the 8.2m Subaru telescope on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A team of
scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry
out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey
includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg in five broad
bands (), with a point-source depth of . The
Deep layer covers a total of 26~deg in four fields, going roughly a
magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter
still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg). Here we describe the
instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data
processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the
Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large
number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early
